At the head of the administrative office is Mr. Kenneth D. Young. This marks the second year that he has served our school as principal. ' lVlr. Alfredo Mireles, Mrs. Joyce Stone, Mrs. Yolanda Gonzalez, Miss Evangelina Sanchez, and Mrs. Sharron Rippy give valuable services to the administration. She has been Registrar and Dean of Girls for the last 2 years. 15 Counselors The counselors are kept busy all year. Between arranging students, records and administering important tests, they find time for individual, as well as group, counseling. Mrs. Risser helps juniors and seniors determine appropriate courses, careers and colleges. Mr. Boston works with freshmen and sophomores in choosing their curriculum and gives academic, as well as personal advice. Mr. Benson, who is the vocational counselor, gives occupational and training information to any student who needs such aid. Lynn Kemp The Varsity Cheerleaders of Del Rio High School for l970-71 proved to be one of the most exciting and skillful squads ever. After winning an overall uexcellentw rating at a summer camp with rigid competition, the girls proved their abilities at the games and pep rallies to follow. The high point of the football season was reached when the girls were invited to lead cheers at a Houston Oiler game in the Astrodome. Band members found themselves working hard during early morning practices so that Friday night during half time there would be no flaws in the program. Sweepstakes was among one of the honors the band won, at UU., competition this year. Adding to the club's honors was Linda llargrove who earned a position on the All-State Band. The newly organized Stage Band specializes in popular music and often entertained the students at assemblies. The directors for the band were lVlr. Garcia and assistant director lVlr. Hernandez. Pat Mitchell was crowned Band Sweetheart for the 1970-71 school year. Asfrodome performance creafed a grand finale for Del Rio Dolls ln the spring of 1967, the Del Rio Dolls were formed and have since been an integral part of the activities of Del Rio High. Doll members are selected not only for looks and dancing ability but for academic and citizenship rating as well. Because the girls are required to try out for every performance only those that are letter perfect are allowed to perform. At Thanksgiving this year, the Dolls gave an outstanding performance in the Astrodome before a stadium crowd of some 40,000 fans for the Houston Oilers pro football game. 59 LEGS, LEGS, AND MORE LEGS! ! The Spanish Club, under the sponsorship of Mrs. Sanchez, had a busy year. Each Monday and Thursday throughout the school year the club sold pastries to the students of Del Rio High School. Seven members of the group attended the Pan-American Student Forum convention held in San Antonio. They made their annual trip to Monterrey and Saltillo. The purpose of the club is to further the knowledge of the Spanish language and the Spanish culture. Members must maintain an overall academic average of 75 or above and attend all regular meetings. Disfribufive Education Club of America To promote leadership qualities in the young people who will enter the field of merchandising and distribution is the main objective of the D.E. Club. During the past year the D.E. Club, composed of students taking Distributive Education, took part in several conferences. In order to raise funds for their activities the club sold programs at the football games. The D.E. Club met the third Thursday of every month with sponsor, Mr. Johnny Diego. The Queen City Comet ripped off a 9.7 in the 100 that was good enough for second. ln the 220 Rowland and Wilson of Odessa were both timed in a new conference record of 21.2. The crowd declared Rowland the winner but the officials gave him second. Led by the fine pitching and hitting of Cesar Sotelo and Jerry Lee, the Cats were often ahead in scoring, but infielding errors would usually cost them the game. The Wildcats ended the season with 7 wins and 14 losses. ln district play they finished with a dissappoint- ing 1-7 record. They won their only game 3-2 against San Felipe. In District competition, in San Antonio, Joel Park advanced to the finals in singles competition. James White and Cliff Dickihut, playing in the doubles competition, were also able to reach the semi-finals. The Tennis team practiced at least two hours, every day after school and participated in four out-of-town tournaments. Next year, every member will be back to play once again. Despite the fact that the time spent at Garner was not more than a few hours, Seniors took advantage of such activities as swimming, riding on paddle boats, bicycle riding, eating and mountain climbing. She started the commencement exercises with the invo- cation. Bill Davis had the fourth highest average. He was master of ceremonies at the com- mencement exercises. Debbie Patterson had the fifth highest average. She read the passage from the Scripture at the commencement exercises. 287 in On Wednesday, June 2, 1971, the Senior Class ol' 1971 held their com- mencement exercises in Wildcat Stadi- um. The main speaker of the evening was the Reverend Mr. William S. Caldwell. He advised the graduating class to be prudent and wise in their choosing of a way oflife. Also speak- ing was Mr. Young, Del Rio High School principal, and scholarships were presented. Susan Lowry gave the valedictory address and Ann Madison gave the salutatory address.
