.? . . ' G in f E SHAKESPEARE PLAYS AN important role in all English courses. Willie Maldonaldo enjoys reading Hamlet. gEng1ish Dept. stresses communication English is considered the most im- portant subject for high school stu- dents because of the rising need of communication, both oral and Writ- ten, in our fast growing society. Therefore, English is the only subject students are required to take all four years. The flexibility of the English program provides a level for all stu- dents according to their individual needs. . For the student graduating under the basic plan, the English Depart- ment offers a moderate, practical program. Under this plan, emphasis is placed on business and commercial writing rather than formal composi- tion. Students in grades freshman through junior for whom English is a second language are provided with a program designed to help them be- come more proficient in English using their native language as a foundation. The program is aimed at broadening reading and speech and pronunciation and enunciation. Students planning to go to college are given a course especially designed to prepare them for the challenges ahead. Under the college-bound pro- gram, stress is placed on literature, composition, and vocabulary. The advanced placement program is similar to the college bound pro- gram in the type of material that is covered. There is no grade average a student must attain to receive advanc- ed placement, but because of the quick pace set in the class, the student must be Willing to put forth extra time and effort. gms-W-s,. .. g SHAKESPEARE CAME TO life in many classes. Gumaro Salazar and Janie Gracia portray parts of Macbeth.

Social Studies classes p The social studies department of Del Rio High School has a large enrollment each year. This year as in years past the required courses were offered at two levels. The college- bound program featured enrichment in the form of outside reading and individual research projects for both oral and written reports. The Co-oper- ative Social Studies Tests were given in world history, American history, government, and advanced govern- ment. These single-subject achievea ment tests published by Princeton Testing Service enabled DRI-IS stu- dents to compare their ranking with that of students all over the country. The most popular elective was sociology, with Latin American history ranking second. More than a third of the Latin American history students spent four days in Monterrey in March, with a stopover of several hours in Saltillo on the way and in Monclova on the return trip. From a serape factory in Saltillo to backstage at the Plaza de Toros in Monterrey, every day was packed with action and rove popular interest. Two advanced standing courses were offered in the department, economics and advanced government. As a climax to study and discussion, the advanced government students analyzed and commented on Arnold Toynbee's recent allegation that the United States is currently more to be feared by the rest of the world than Russia. Their summations were sub- mitted in letter form replying to Professor Toynbee and the news media publishing his charges. tif 1 It V .,,., ff, f 'sq t ex v W. . i4?,4,g,,'f t 'F i ,U MRS CLAIRE ABBETT social studies department head, is pleased with a student's ' gy y . , tiff: a.'1,1 : :-,ig L W., is' fs , .1 f egg ,gia'f' ,,l .,f - gh 1 ff' f airies I wk we ' W 1 Q 2-:gg - 't 'ii - -ai: i - , comment. .,L91s:3134+Zr,3 4 .a 11, .Z-2 1 if rr Z g 2 ' 13 it if , gl T 2 1 si , S if i MRS.
