3 51' U !i 'i 01, ?.4Sc1nr 6.9- Jingles For me it was a time of joy, festivity, and most of all, presents. It was my sixth birthday and I was loving every minute of it. You must understand that turning six is a very important event in a young man's life. Well, it was important to me anyway. As I hoped, the presents poured on in from every direction. They came in every shape and color. I greeted them willingly with a smile, a Hthank you , and then ripped off the wrapping paper. Oh it was the most fun I have ever had. When I had finished, I sat there, my face glowing with contentment and my eyes darting about, looking over all my presents. Then my dad came into the room and asked me if I wanted to go downtown with him. How come parents never seem to realize that you may want to play with your new toys? I didn't want to go downtown but I agreed, for I was a little suspicious of the whole thing. We drove through town a ways before stopping at a small pet store. I had a feeling something was up, but I didn't show it. We walked inside and low and behold, Jingles became part of the family. Jingles was a small, brown-eyed, floppy-eared beagle. Best of all, she was my very own. I was so excited and happy I didn't know what to say. As time new on, Jingles and I grew to be best pals. We did everything together. We hiked, played army, swam, you name it, we did it together. There was only one problem. Jingles had the terrific ability to miss her papers and go on the rug. lVly dad didn't take to this the way Jingles did, and he told me to do something about it. I decided to have a man to dog talk with Jingles. HJingles, I said, why don't you use your papers? What's the matter? You don't like the sports section? I chuckled at my own joke, but then remembered how serious this really was. UWell? I waited patiently, but she didn't reply. Not even a bark. Finally I got fed up and left the room. The next morning, after breakfast, Jingles and I headed up the street toward my friend's house. About half way, Jingles turned around and started back for home. She still must have been upset about last night's talk, but I don't know why. I apologized six times. In any event, I let her go, figuring nothing would happen. I was greeted warmly at my friend's house with a piece of cake and a hug from his mother. We played about an hour before my brother came knocking at the door. 'IWhat do you want? I asked suspiciously. llYou shut up and listen to me! he screamed, out of breath. I'Jingles has been hit by a car! I don't know when it happened or who did it . . . Oh, my God! I cried as I burst out the door. Iran blindly down the road. So many thoughts ran through my head. Tears rolled down my face. When I arrived, I saw Jingles. I fell to my knees and buried my face im my arms. I cried even harder. Jingles was dead. Jamie Leitz F v 26 Q . I
