It was my sixth birthday and I was loving every minute of it. You must understand that turning six is a very important event in a young man's life. Well, it was important to me anyway. As I hoped, the presents poured on in from every direction. They came in every shape and color. I greeted them willingly with a smile, a Hthank you , and then ripped off the wrapping paper. Oh it was the most fun I have ever had. When I had finished, I sat there, my face glowing with contentment and my eyes darting about, looking over all my presents. Then my dad came into the room and asked me if I wanted to go downtown with him. How come parents never seem to realize that you may want to play with your new toys? I didn't want to go downtown but I agreed, for I was a little suspicious of the whole thing. We drove through town a ways before stopping at a small pet store. I had a feeling something was up, but I didn't show it. We walked inside and low and behold, Jingles became part of the family. Jingles was a small, brown-eyed, floppy-eared beagle. Best of all, she was my very own. I was so excited and happy I didn't know what to say. As time new on, Jingles and I grew to be best pals. We did everything together. We hiked, played army, swam, you name it, we did it together. There was only one problem. Jingles had the terrific ability to miss her papers and go on the rug. lVly dad didn't take to this the way Jingles did, and he told me to do something about it. I decided to have a man to dog talk with Jingles. HJingles, I said, why don't you use your papers? What's the matter? You don't like the sports section? I chuckled at my own joke, but then remembered how serious this really was. UWell? I waited patiently, but she didn't reply. Not even a bark. Finally I got fed up and left the room. The next morning, after breakfast, Jingles and I headed up the street toward my friend's house. About half way, Jingles turned around and started back for home. She still must have been upset about last night's talk, but I don't know why. I apologized six times. In any event, I let her go, figuring nothing would happen. I was greeted warmly at my friend's house with a piece of cake and a hug from his mother. We played about an hour before my brother came knocking at the door. 'IWhat do you want? I asked suspiciously. llYou shut up and listen to me! he screamed, out of breath. I'Jingles has been hit by a car! I don't know when it happened or who did it . . . Oh, my God! I cried as I burst out the door. Iran blindly down the road. So many thoughts ran through my head. Tears rolled down my face. When I arrived, I saw Jingles. I fell to my knees and buried my face im my arms. I cried even harder. Jingles was dead. Jamie Leitz F v 26 Q . I Fear Fear is walking into lVlr. Serence's class on the day of an algebra test. t'Settle down now. Class starts in twenty-two seconds. A sudden and hidden smile comes over his face as he announces to the class, 'tToday we will take the mid-chapter test. Suddenly, the class becomes frightfully silent. A small knock is heard on the door. Jamie Leitz is late after Hirting with the girls. Helplessly he signals a nearby person to let him in before he can be noticed by lVlr. Serences. His hopes are dashed as the teacher announces, ltLet him in! Jamie enters the classroom with fear on his face. Nlr. Serences gives him a disgusted look. With a deep, secure voice and an expression that looks like the world has been wiped out, he divulges, 'llVlr. Leitz, you are forty-nine seconds late, having paused momentarily to compute the time. UYou have held up the class almost a minute. Now GET TO YOUR SEAT! As the test sheets are handed out, the students exchange formulas and ideas to help re-establish confidence among themselves. We begin the test. Time passes quickly. After what seems like a moment, lVlr. Serences announces in a deep voice, llTwelve minutes, twenty-two seconds left. Suddenly panic overtakes the class. Laurel Greenfield gives him a nasty look to express her feeling of the situation. 'l0nly twelve minutes?' someone moans. 'lNo, twelve minutes and . . . sixteen seconds. Now, back to work! responds the angry teacher. After announcing the time to the nearest second several times, Nlr. Serences counts off the final aggravating seconds, 'lFour, three, two, one. Hand in all papers. Always prompt on his correcting, lVlr. Serences soon returns the tests. Just before revealing the class average, a sudden smile appears on his face. Quickly, he selects a calculator from many on hand. After computing the average, his smile reappears. He imparts, lAThe class average is fifty-three. Once again I knew that I had Hunked another algebra test. Calvin Burnes Math All those digits in a row Make my head keep aching so. A test each week can be a pain. It tends to drive a soul insane. When I get those math tests back, I almost have a heart attack. 11 I see that grade right by my name. And know that Ifm the one to blame. LNM. X Well, better luck next time, I say. Tomorrow is another day. Liz Askeland KX Q . Morris Must Have Eaten His Other Eight Lives Morris' death affected my cats deeply. When I told Prince and Petula, my cats, that their favorite television star had died, they went into deep depression. I noticed their appetite for 9-Lives had vanished. I suspected that it brought back painful memories of their finicky friend. The twinkle went from their once bright eyes and their whiskers drooped. They were now idle and never watched television because of the constant reminders of their tragic loss. Petula would stare at her carefully framed lock of fur, from his golden carcass, hours on end. The cost of flowers was rising, which had me worried, for I'd soon have to file for bankruptcy. After three days, insomnia set in. I noticed the sleeping pills slowly disappearing. I was afraid Prince and Petula might decide to join their recently departed Morris. I put the pills down the garbage disposal. After five monotonous days I took Prince and Petula to a shrink, but all he prescribed was some catnip and a rubber mouse. Troubles like these don't end with a simple bouncy mouse. The cats were still in mourning, but I was fed up with it, so I said, All right, guys, enough is enough. You're going to have to face facts. Morris is dead. You're just gonna have to settle for Lassie.
