He has gained the respect of many during his years at Del Mar. In his treatment of politics, he has shown students the importance of democracy and the part each must play in it. He has helped to facilitate communication between the students and the administration. For his help and his inspiration, we, the staff of Laurel 1970, dedicate this book to Mr. Don Rogers. Galleon Staff' jU NIGR CLASS OFFICERS FALL SPRING 40 K l , 4451 Seated:C.Murray. Standing: C.Pettingill, B.Fontaine, P. Benevento. This year's junior class had an abun- dant amount of ambition always attri- buted to the '71 ability. In other words, the junior class this year was one of the top classes. Starting with the annual magazine sale, the juniors sold more magazines than ever before. This was achieved with a great deal of hard work and ingenuity and will be used to finance future junior activities. A social event that will long be remem- bered by the class of '71 was the junior prom. Another activity that the juniors excelled in was in student government. For the first time in Del Mar history, john Fischer, a junior, was elected spring Student Body President. Indeed, the junior class has achieved much this year. In fact, one could say that this year's junior class has made Del Mar history. Seated: j.Sheriff, S.Tedesco. Standing: j.Sch- roll, P.Apland. i ,. Q. A, an XF. SOPHOMORE CLASS GFFICERS FALL SPRING 48 L-R, C.Nozumi, S.Watson, D.Riley, A.lchakawa The Class of '72 went to all extremes to raise funds for their treasury, starting on Christmas Eve when they paraded around different neighborhoods dressed as Santa and his band of elves and sang Christmas carols. A paper- drive was another fund raising scheme. The Sophomores planned and designed a sophomore class pin which, along with the class rings, went on sale in late February. Sophomores also presented the idea of abolishing the F grade in all studies. The year was climaxed by the Sophomore class party in May. I5 L-R: C.Nozumi,P.sram0n,P.Aus1in, T.Kanala C L. V' I W. Through my envolvement in the Boys' State program, I received an idea of how our state government functions. In the Boys' State program I played a significant role of a re- spected Municipal Court lustice of the Peace. More important than the educational aspects of this government game were the many friends that I became acquainted with. Some of the people there were really nice. I had many friends. This wonderful experience is one which shall be remembered as one of the highlights of my four rewarding years at Del Mar. My exodus from Boys'State left in a state of lethargy. My blithe memories of the volatile Boys' State rendezvous made the whole trip an invaluable experience. Bruce Posey GIRLS' STATE PAULA GREENE Girls' State brings together five hundred girls, each from five hundred schools in California. We were divided into Cities, Counties, and parties before we arrived. We spent eight days investigating the working of our government by actually doing it ourselves. We started with city government, then county, and on to state govern- ment. We petitioned for offices, campaigned, had elections, made and passed legislature. This was the most rewarding experience I have ever had. I met five hundred girls who were very outstanding, and beautiful people. In eight days I developed stronger friendships than I have in seventeen years. Government went from being something cold and boring in a history book to a reality we could touch, change, and love. I know all five hundred of us were excited to find that we would make great changes for our government instead of against it. Our govern- ment itself is beautiful. lt is only when put in the wrong hands that it loses this beauty. Thank you for giving me this wonderful experience. privileges: Hermle, Rich' Murphy john Stein, Robert Now we are several weekends and several pages later. All that we can show for our work is a dummy of plans and hopes. I am not sure that you will even like this book. But I hope you will accept this book as my attempt to help you remember this school year. This page now belongs to you. Along with this page goes the heartache, frustration, tears, and joy that come with giving these pages life and meaning. There will be times when the whole world is set against you, but remember the goal is worth the struggle, despite the obstacles. For all the excuses and complaints you will hear, these pages somehow make the excuses and complaints seem distant and unimportant. The Laurel has been mine since the beginning of this school year, and now it belongs to you, the students of Del Mar. I only hope you enjoy this book. A347-xof776S 0-?FfC6 Goff
