Honors Faculty 85 Administration 1 'w ig! T , 5 1 ' DEDICATION With the realization of the scholastic honors you have brought to Del Mar, we, the 1966 yearbook staff, dedicate the LAUREL to you. You have been a teacher at Del Mar since its opening and each year you have set the standards that have helped to create a high scholastic reputation for our school. The extra hours spent directing plays or coaching and tutoring students for college have been and are deeply ap- preciated. You have further aided sen- iors by effectively helping with college applications and recommendations. Your enthusiasm for teaching is clearly evident in your classroom and by your teaching methods. Most outstanding is the unselfish giving of yourself and your time to Del Mar. For these reasons we thank you and dedicate the 1966 LAUREL to you MRS. WOODWARD ---ii S I.. f 331111-Q PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE Graduation from high school is a milestone in the life of every Senior. lt is my desire that each of you leave pre- pared to lead purposeful lives. This means that you will continue to learn, work and serve. We, the faculty and administration, will have been successful if your per- sonal ideals, attitudes and values have been strengthened because of your as- sociations and experiences at Del Mar High School. I wish you well in all your future endeavors. . . George F. Miskulin This is Del Mar High School . WN f-'- 'N- W Y -15 -so To the casual observer it is little different from countless other new schools throughout California. Architecturally Del Mar is attractive with its contemporary buildings, well landscaped grounds, and playing fleldsg yet the real mark of a successful school lies in its attitudes. t Students and teachers are in agreement that they are both here for the purpose of studying, seeking, and searching in an attempt to arrive at under- standing. This understanding is achieved not only by an excellent academic pro- gram, but also by a full extra curricular program. Together these combine to make up the Del Mar atmosphere . . . one of friendliness, earnestness, and spirit. 6 Jf Qf T X ,Q ...f 1 x iii Learning teacheth more in one year than experience in twenty. Del Mar High School welcomes four foreign exchange students: Lars Andersson from Goteborg, Sweden and Lale Aka from Ankara, Turkey spon- sored by the American Field Service: Maren Sander- hoff from Seesen, Germany and Gabriel Helbig from Berlin, Germany sponsored by the Council of Churches' Youth for Understanding Program. To create greater understanding between peoples of the world by bringing students from abroad to study in United States secondary schools and live with families for a year is the main purpose of the American Field Service Winter Program and the Council of Churches' Youth for Understanding Program. 'UMNO' ff U iii lllll lllll ...lv a vu., Qaidisf American Field Service I think it is always a good experience to come out and travel while you are young. We came to New York and landed at the Kennedy Airport. It was really hot. I ex- pected New York to be really big so I wasn't surprised, but the smell of gas all over town and the air being hard to breathe bothered me. I like cities because there are so many differences. In an area like this, the people are very much alike, but in a city there are all kinds of people. There are many differences. Lars Andersson My father encouraged me because he had his educa- tion outside his home town and I think he wanted me to come here but still be myself. The only advice he gave me was to let my conscience be my guide. American people are practical. They find a way to solve every problem. Their way is not always right for others, but it is right for them. American people are friend- ly, they make you feel easy. The minute I get into an American house, I feel I have been there for ages. I would love to come back and I would love to live here, if only I had my parents. Lale Aka Council of Churches In my country we think of the United States as the land of a thousand possibilities, many cars and everyone is busy. I was a little afraid, I didn't know what kind of family I would get and I had mixed feelings. I like Ameri- can schools. They have wide halls and are spread out over a large area. Our schools are old and the rooms are un- decorated. School here is more like a game. I didn't have to make any adjustments when I got here. I don't even feel foreign here. Everyone made me feel welcome. Maren Sanderhoff I heard so much about the country I wanted to get acquainted with people, not through books and papers, but by talking to people. I like American campuses. We don't have football fields and all that. I am really glad I came. I wish many more students could do it. I think maybe I would like to come over for college. California is a wonderful place. American teenagers are friendly and willing to communicate. If all the teenagers in the United States are as nice as those at Del Mar, the nation can be proud of them. An excerpt from a poem by Yevtushenko And the voice of Zima junction spoke to me and this is what it said. 'I live quietly and crack nuts. I gently steam with engines. But not without reflection on these times, these modern times, my loving meditation. Don't worry. Yours is no unique condition, your type of search and conflict and construction, don't worry if you have no answer ready to the lasting question. Hold out, meditate, listen. Explore. Explore. Travel the world over. Count happiness connatural to the mind more than truth is, and yet no happiness to exist without it. Walk with a cold pride utterly ahead wild attentive eyes head Hicked by the rain-wet green needles of the pine, eyelashes that shine with tears and with thunders. Love people. Love entertains its own discrimination. Have me in mind, I shall be watching. You can return to me. Now go.'
