Watching our campus grow from the beginning, each hall, each room, the amphi- theatre, and football bowl mean something indefinably special to him . Mr. Long is an understanding friend and shares a sincere inter- est in every Del Mar student. Discussions about his ardent love for gardening, last week's varsity game, or his trip from England to America in i904 fascinate his man loyal pals. His wonderfully sparllling personality has made him truly a part of our first year at Del Mar. Walker The Del Mar Varsity Football Team did not fare too well this year. We were victorious against only one other team in the SCVAL West division, Sunnyvale High. ln all the rest we went down in defeat, even though several were close and could have gone either way. In our first league start, we put up a stiff battle against the Fremont Indians for three quarters. At Santa Clara, we lost by an offside penalty which nullified what would have been a winning touchdown. Under the lights at los Gatos our Dons had the ball for nearly twice as many offensive plays as did the opposition, but could not defend against the long passes of the 'Cats. We made a poor showing in the first two stanzas of the Thanksgiving Day pageantwith our new ly initiate rival, Camden High. We did come back in the second half to hold the Cougars, but our 19 points in those final two periods were not enough to match their 25. Some have said that if there would have been another quarter to play in that contest that the fired-up Dons would have come out on top. wgs!Qi'52.s:g1.-111, ' x fwevzsvkx f 1 fi .'., ., .Xk, K ...L .....,.W .. . fr. Gugat, D. Womer The surprise of the year at Del Mar was our Varsity Basketball team. Picked by the critics to finish near fourth or fifth spot in the WSCVAL, the Dons proved their worth by taking part in a three way tie for the loop crown. Their league record at the end of the season showed a notable 8-2 mark, as they lost only to Los Gatos, in the league opener, and to Los Altos in the finale. If the Dons had won the last one they would have rested on championship laurels by themselves, but because of the loss, they were forced into sharing with the Sunnyvale Jets and the Knights of Los Altos. Individually speaking, the standout member of the squad was Rich Gugat, a 6'2 senior. Rich was the high scorer in the league, a title which he has held for the past two years. He also was named player of the year in the WSCVAL, and received a berth on the ALL-SCVAL team, the North Coast team, and the Northern California team. As captain of this year's varsity, Rich certainly did his part in bringing recognition to Del Mar High. lf v lrzli M Q ffl , QQ! This defi- nition. although true, is brief and gives only part of the entire picture. Looking at these words go each year to learn more about government, a person does not realize how we formed into polit- ical parties and set up a complete state government, filling the official positions ourselvesg legislation was actually carried on as if we had a state depending on us. By putting into practice things that we'd read all' our lives in history books, this word. government suddenly took on a new and distinct meaning to each Girl Stater. In the definition of Girls' State, not brought out, either, are the warm, lifelong friendships and the common bond of Girl Staters, whether a girl goes to Girls' State in California or New York. The rich mem- ories of both the business and social times make up my own definition of Girls' State. an experience for which I'm grateful and will never forget. Julie Phelps Lloyd Gillespie Words cannot express what a young citizen's heart feels when he is one of 800 boys, all of whom are competing against each other for government offices and learn- ing the procedures of these offices. Besides the elections, the city. county and state meetings, the political party rallies and the court 'sessions all carried on by the boys themselves, there is the daily routine of living and a recreation schedule for this huge group. This recreation in- cludes music by the band, games, skits and the open canteen. A full schedule each day ends with the lights out at ten o'clock when all the boys are ready to get into their sleeping bags. The memories I have of the California Boys' State twenty second annual conven- tion are truly pleasantand worthwhile. This is probably one of the finest things that I will ever experience. I appreciate this opportunity given me by Mr. Miskulin and my sponsors, the Charles Wallace Legion Post Number 666. My thanks to them. Lloyd Gillespie Foreign Exchange Students Aud Ostin-Olsen Susan Todd Dear Seniors of 6O, I knew when I received the letter from American Field Service that told me that I had received the scholarship, that the year would be a wonderful experience. You have been so nice to me, and all of you have contributed to make this the most exciting experience I ever have had. You have made me feel at home at Del Mar, and the school belongs and means just as much to me as to you. I really do not know how l ever will be able to thank you for all the nice things you have done for me. The only thing I wish is that every single one of you, one day would have the opportunity to explore my country, and maybe you will find whatl have found here, kindness, and friends for the rest of my life. I want to thank Mr. Miskulin, the faculty, the students, the community, and all the individuals, who have made this wonderful year possible for me. Sincerely. Aud Ostin-Olsen Norway 107 I feel very honored to have been chosen as the first exchange student under the Amer ican Field Service Summer Program to rep- resent the Campbell High School District abroad during this past summer, and wish to thank the School District, students, and community for this opportunity. lt was a very rewarding experience, and one which will greatly influence my future life. I spent the summer living with two fam- ilies in Germanyg six weeks in Southwestern Germany near Heidelberg , and two weeks in Northern Germany near Bremen. 'l also traveled to Kronach, Bavaria , where Ispent three days, and, from there, visited the border ofEast Germany. I made many lasting friendships and learned many new things. I had no knowledge of the German language, but found this to be no handicap, as the people were very willing to help me, and so I returned home with a working knowledge of their language. I hope that the American Field Service Program will be continued in this district. Sincerely, Susan Todd h Color Committee T ey made the first important decisions. LEFT TO RIGHT: S. Denea, P. Much spirit was added to the school by the band's enthusiasm and colorful uniforms. Contributing to the success of the band were the energetic flag girls, the talented maiorettes, and the high-stepping drum major. Many of the school's activities were enhanced by the presence of the band. Some of these included: football half time shows, assemblies, the variety show, and grad- uation. Because of its exceptional ability, the band was allowed to participate in activities outside of the school, which is quite an achievement for a first year band. With such an outstanding year behind it, the Del Mar band will most certainly march on to more awarding accomplishments in the future. The Del Mar High A Cappella Choir, under the leadership of Mr. Frank Triena, has con- tributed greatly to the spirited tradition that has been achieved this year at Del Mar. This 69 member organization has been active in inter'-school as well as inter-community activities. Some of the highlighted performances have been the Del Mar Dedication, the Inter-District Festival, the Christmas Program, the Foreign Exchange Assembly, and the first Graduation. The members can be proud to say they have been a part of the first A Cappella Choir of Del Mar. The Del Mar High Glee Club, also under Mr. Triena's leadership, has added to the school's musical entertainment. This organization has accomplished much this year. They have appeared in assemblies, evening programs, the Christmas Show, and the Spring Concert. The 73 members in the glee club are made up mostly of Freshmen a.nd Sophomores, who will go on to join the choir in the future. LEFT TO RIGHT, FIRST ROW: C. Sharp, K. Mannina, D. Miklovik, A.
