Journalistic Abilit Honored lt was a distinct honor to be a member of the Quill and Scroll Club. Candidates for Quill and Scroll membership must have demonstrated to their yearbook or newspaper advisor that they meritted the award through high scholarship and journalistic achievement and service. They also had to be serving their second successive year on a publication staff. This was the first year that Del Campo had a Quill and Scroll Club with yoting members. ln the past students who received the honor were graduating seniors, however, this year members were chosen from the sophomore and junior classes as well. New club members were chosen in February and attended a dinner in their honor given by Mrs. Pepper, the club advisor Top Left: Quill and Scroll members, newspaper staff, are, L to R, Row l: Craig Shadburn, Erik Wessler, Dave Merritt, Mark Evon. E, f Last summerl spent eight weeks in Europe as part of a program called The Experiment In International Living . My Experiment began in Putney, Vermont for a three day orientation. l next flew with a group to Hamburg, Germany, our first contact with the European world. We stayed in this city only a few days to sightsee and then we boarded a train headed for Copenhagen, Denmark where we emplaned for Helsinki, Finland. ln Helsinki l parted with the American group and took a five hour bus ride to a town called Saarijarvvi. This town would be my second home for a month. It was a long and lonely ride but finallyl arrived and met my new family. l had two brothers, Jarmo age twenty and Jyurki age nineteen, and two sisters, Ffrja age eighteen and Katariina age sixteen, not to mention two wonderful parents. I lived in a two hundred year old farmhouse on a farm called Likopelto. We had a huge lake in our backyard where we swam and waterskied. The lake was also used for the traditional Finnish sauna. About once a week we'd go into a small hut with a wood burning stove. My father would splash water on hot stones and we'd sweat as much as we could tolerate, then we'd make a mad dash out of the sauna into the sixty degree water of the lake. My family was the wealthiest in the area and every year they arranged a day of entertainment for the community. Circus entertainers were hired to perform and I was lucky enough to be there during this time to enjoy the day of activities. The teenagersl met while I was there were alot like American teenagers, the only difference seemed to be that they knew alot more of what they wanted and what was expected of them. They also didn't seem as rushed as Americans. All to soon the month was up and I joined my American group with their Finnish brothers and sisters for an informal trip to Leningrad, Russia. My impressions of the U.S.S.R. were very cold, plain, and lifeless, such a contrast to the Finnish culture. After the trip we returned once again to Finland where we exchanged final farewells with our Finnish families as well as the natural beauty and culture of their country. I wish to express my deepest thanks to the adult and student chapters of the I.E.C. who devoted many hours in making my Experiment one I'll never forget. iam
