Cultural Exchange l spent my summer in Canas, Costa Rica. Canas is a very small town of one thousand to two thousand people and is in the northern part of Costa Rica. My stay consisted of ten weeks with a fantastic family. l had three brothers and one sister. My mother was a housewife and my father was principal at the highschool until he resigned so he would be able to run for senator from Guanacaste, the state in which Canas was located. Most of the time in Canasl went to school, which was held Monday thru Saturday. Un Sundays we would go three miles out of town to my father's finca franch J to work with the cattle. VVe stayed out there each Sunday from 8 am to 5 pm. l never knew ranch life could be so hard. Costa Rican food is good if you like rice and beans. These two foods were included in almost every meal. Our meat was supplied by my fathers two hundred head of cattle, so we had plenty of meat. Breakfast was the only meal that didn't consist of rice and beans. We were usually in a hurry to go to school, which started at 7 am, so we just had coffee and bread with honey. School let out at 11:30 am for lunch, which was usually the biggest meal. After lunch everyone would sleep till 2 or 3 pm. At 4 pm almost everyone headed to the basketball courts to play either basketball or volleyball. When that was over we all went home for dinner. After dinner it was very quiet unless there was a dance going on. All in alll had a great time. l will never forget the new thingsl have experienced. l would like to thank l. E. C., the A. F. S. staff, Mrs. Chambers, and everyone at Del Campo who made it possible. 77251446 Qgpjiafd my-Us l 'ifh..J'WQv- , ' gn .. ,m, mt, .L as V 5 .f.: Q .roi

The International Exchange Club is the student organization that is interested in all types of exchange programs and foreign travel and study. They were responsible for sending Mark Orchard and Brian Minuth abroad last summer, and for bringing Rosa Recio here this year. In the fall they had International Night, on September 27, where students spoke about their summer experiences abroad. Later they had their International Dessert Night, on February 6, where desserts from different countries were served. 'lihere is also an adult chapter ofthe International Exchange Club which helps raise money. I.I'f.C. also raised money by selling snow cones every Friday in the Gym Snack Bar during the warm weather, and they had as annual rummage sale in the spring.

E, f Last summerl spent eight weeks in Europe as part of a program called The Experiment In International Living . My Experiment began in Putney, Vermont for a three day orientation. l next flew with a group to Hamburg, Germany, our first contact with the European world. We stayed in this city only a few days to sightsee and then we boarded a train headed for Copenhagen, Denmark where we emplaned for Helsinki, Finland. ln Helsinki l parted with the American group and took a five hour bus ride to a town called Saarijarvvi. This town would be my second home for a month. It was a long and lonely ride but finallyl arrived and met my new family. l had two brothers, Jarmo age twenty and Jyurki age nineteen, and two sisters, Ffrja age eighteen and Katariina age sixteen, not to mention two wonderful parents. I lived in a two hundred year old farmhouse on a farm called Likopelto. We had a huge lake in our backyard where we swam and waterskied. The lake was also used for the traditional Finnish sauna. About once a week we'd go into a small hut with a wood burning stove. My father would splash water on hot stones and we'd sweat as much as we could tolerate, then we'd make a mad dash out of the sauna into the sixty degree water of the lake. My family was the wealthiest in the area and every year they arranged a day of entertainment for the community. Circus entertainers were hired to perform and I was lucky enough to be there during this time to enjoy the day of activities. The teenagersl met while I was there were alot like American teenagers, the only difference seemed to be that they knew alot more of what they wanted and what was expected of them. They also didn't seem as rushed as Americans. All to soon the month was up and I joined my American group with their Finnish brothers and sisters for an informal trip to Leningrad, Russia. My impressions of the U.S.S.R. were very cold, plain, and lifeless, such a contrast to the Finnish culture. After the trip we returned once again to Finland where we exchanged final farewells with our Finnish families as well as the natural beauty and culture of their country. I wish to express my deepest thanks to the adult and student chapters of the I.E.C. who devoted many hours in making my Experiment one I'll never forget. iam
