Splash! Varsity tankers started their season with no place to swim due to a malfunctioning pool heater. Immediately the search was started for a place for the anxious Cougars to practice. Accommodations at Glen Oaks Tennis and Swim Club were made and the team started workouts. Few people realize the strenuous nature of swimming. Workouts consist of laps, laps, and more laps. Very often the distance is over 4,000 yards. These laps are not always just the stroke one does, many times one swims with a deflated inner tube strapped around the ankles, or holding on to a kickboard. Neither of these devices are for lazy people. These make the workouts twice as tiring. Looking at the pictures does not bring into focus the amount of work involved. just watch a swim team practice, then the understanding is brought home. Talking to Coach Wayne Geri, the question was asked, Why do they do it? His answer was There's such satisfaction in it. Winning isn't everything, these swimmers swim against themselves.
