S ophs Fourth Hurt by the lifting of the top five sophomore basketball players to the the sophomore team struggled into fourth with a six win-eight loss slate. Although this record is a poor one for a Del Campo team, the soph team played some fine basketball. Ron Dickinson, Brian VVirt, and Mark Skalender pounded the backboards for the Cougars. The outside shooting touch was delivered by George Rodine, Brian Sohl, and John David. ' Coach Harry Kawahata often sent John Martin and Brian Sohl to spell the regulars. jeff Rabe, Frank Wooden, Todd Nyman, Mitch Gibson, and Mike Nlorton provided a backup crew. These sophs and the two freshmen, Brian Wirt and John David, should provide a strong nucleus for next year's j.V. Top: Brian Wirt makes a move to the basket. Junior Varsit Capturing the C.V.C. title this year was surprisingly easy for the J.V. An awesome attack that often beat opponents by twenty points or more was led by Bob lVIcKone, Kurt Van Tassel, john Van Matre, Greg Jeffrey, and Ken Ledbetter. Latecomer Mike Green set up teammates' shots with his sparkling passing. Kurt Van Tassel and John Van Matre supplied the long outside shots while Bob McKone and Ken Ledbetter Sweeps C. V. C. provided hackboard brawn. Greg Jeffrey played a fine all-around game. Often a nonstarter would score more points than a starter. Fine substitute shooters were Jim Rodine and Stan Cramer. Glen Penko and Paul Bradford ably assisted the starters with fine rebounding and defense. Garth Ellis and Craig Tueller provided hustle and defense. Freshmen Take Second The frosh cagers took a close second to crowds with his adroit ball handling. Mira Loma thanks to the fine coaching of Dick Hogge. Showing poise and balance, the freshman team went through C.V.C. competition with only three losses. Led by Tom Van Matre, Tim Berns, and Dave Sharp, the Cougars had a high scoring team. Tim Berns, Kelly Smith, and Brett Peterson rebounded well for the frosh. Eric Morse, a pint-sized guard, often brought cheers from the small but enthusiastic Right: Mike Shedler gets off a shot against Rio Americano. Bottom right: Tim Berns waits on the free throw land. Tom Van Matre held the club together defensively and also had a fine shooting touch. Hustler Kelly Smith often picked up stray shots and put them back in. Mike Shedler came in to replace the guards.
