Right: Life as a coach is often tense and frustrating as shown in Eli McCullough's expressions. Below: Cougars warm up for the game against Encina. Bottom right: Rich Shipp pumps in a jumpshot in warm ups. Twenty- Three Wins Sensational is the only way to describe the varsity basketball team's year. The twenty-three wins came as the result ofa tenacious, hard-pressing defense, and potent offense. Scoring was nearly always balanced and the Cougars displayed a teamwork rare in these days of glory hunters. Unselfishness was the key to this year's offense's success. Three players broke the school's assist record for a season, Mark Meidinger, Kevin Woodbury, and Steve Morgan. Bruce Wirt led all scorers with a 19.6 point per game average, and also was the leading Cougar rebounder. Paul Tucker, Jeff Mitchell, and Kevin Woodbury all were also tough on the backboards. Rich Shipp, a 6'7 substitute. often came in and ripped down rebound after rebound. Mark Meidinger pumped set shots in from long range, and Steve Morgan drove past defenders to score on lay-ups. Eli McCullough, realizing the Cougars' potential, set them to a fast paced running style which wore opponents down.
