c A ri Clutch The championship was to be decided on the last game of the season. Bella Vista and Deo Campo came into the last game undefeated and untied. Bella Vista leaped out in front 6-2 and held this lead through the half. Del Campo buckled down and started on the comeback trail. The D.C. tanlcmen held Bella Vista to one second half goal and scored five with Dan Camilli accounting for four. With the game tied 7-7 at the end of regulation play, an overtime was called. Both teams scored in the overtime and another would have to be played to decide the championship. This overtime was the last as the Cougar's offense rammed home three goals, scored by Spencer Chaney, Tracy Bankert, and Bob Taylor. Top: Bob Taylor puts the heat on Bella Vista's number 25. Tankers take it Many people try to equate Del Campo's athletic success only to basketball. This is not true, for in the past several years, Del Campo's water pole teams have come in either first or second in the C.V.C. This year's water pole team, coached by Roger Steel, is no exception. They romped through their seven league games undefeated and untied enroute to a fine ll- 8 season record. But do not think their competition was a pushover. Ir took poised, aggressive play on D.C.'s part to pull out exciting victories over perennial champion Rio Americano K5-4D and also over Bella Vista fl 1-8, double OTJ which was for the championship. ln advancing to the section tourney, the highlight for D.C., who placed sixth, included the naming of Chris John to the second team All Tournament. Del Campo's offense was led by Bob Taylor, Chrisjohn and Dan Camilli while the defense was led by Spencer Chaney, Tracy Bankert and Tyler Smith. With only mainstrays Scott Jenkins, Ray 0'Sullivan and Bob Taylor leaving, next year's team promises to be as successful as this year's team. Varsity Strong Depth was this year's varsity cross country team's strong point. The top five Cougars often ran in the top twenty finishers of most of the races. This depth pushed Del Campo into a tie for second place in C.V.C. dual meets and a third place finish in the league meet. ln placing third in the league meet, the Cougars knocked third ranked Bella Vista out of the section meet. Upsetting Bella Vista was accomplished by Bill Mumma placing fourth, Kevin Hansen placing fifth, Chris Garrett placing seventeenth, Bob Koch placing twenty-first, and John Van Matre finishing twenty-second. The Cougars ranked ninth in the section ratings. Next year's hopes look bright as only Bob Koch and Kevin Hanson are graduating. The other five of the top seven harriers will be back. Sophomore Bill Mumma ran brilliantly and should have an even better season next year. Steady describes Kevin Hanson's year. He was always near the top in all the races. Bill and Kevin battled all season for the top spot on the team. Sickness hampered Bob Koch's running all year long, yet he placed highly in most races. This year's surprise runner was Chris Garrett. Chris developed into a fine runner and should do well next year also. John Van Matre picked up needed places to insure Cougar victories.
