That's Entertainment This has been an interesting year in entertainment. ln 1983 and during the first part of 1984 there was an upsurge in the music industry. Record sales, which had been declining, turned around and showed an 18 per cent increase over the past year. One of the biggest reasons forthe increase was the release of albums such as Michael Jacksons Thriller, That album had sales of over S20 million and artist Michael Jackson walked away with eight Grammy Awards. Other big albums of the year were The Pollce's Synchronicity, Van Halen's 1984 , and the Flashdance Movie Soundtrack. Songs of the year that dominated radio airplay were hits such as Every Breath You Take, by The Police, Billie Jean, by Michael Jacksong and Flashdance . Q. What A Feeling, by Irene Cara. S In the motion picture industry, Flashdance, Risky Business, Trading Places, and Footloose were among the most popular movies. Other popular films were Terms of Endearmentf' Return of the Jedi, and a surprise hit, Dead Zone. Although the quality of many of the years's movies was quite good, television programming was generally average to poor. Shows that did prosper were mainly prime-time soap operas such as Dallas, Dynasty, and Knots Landing. Also getting high ratings were The A-Team, Hill Street Blues, and 60 Minutes. A number of shows featuring television and movie bloopers, along with favorite TV commercials, also did well in the ratings. In addition to records, movies, and television, students had the opportunity to also enjoy locally-produced entertainment. Two dramatic productions were presented at DHS this year. The fall play, David and Lisa, was the story of the lives of emotionally disturbed teenagers. Guys and Dolls, the spring musical, was a mixture of comedy, dancing, and music. Student Life!9
