Goodrich. Head Coach Chuck Schrader. DeKalb's 1981 football team ended another successful season with a loss to eventual State Champions Wheaton North, 20-6. It ended a 9-2 season and stopped the Barb's hopes of gaining a state championship. Beginning the season with Sycamore, the Barbs came into the game as underdogs. Losing S3 seniors from last year's successful team, the gridders were considered as being in a rebuilding year. DeKalb erased that thought by trouncing Sycamore, 24-14. The winning tradition that last year's team had, carried over and the Barbs went on to win thrillers over Dixon and Aurora West. But the first real test came against Larkin. Larkin, which had been rated fifth in state in some pre-season polls, met the Barbs on the Astro-turf at N.I.U. DeKalb, which had been depleted of eight starters, threw-off one of the most exciting games in the history of Dekalb. The Barbs won the game, 27-26. Having to win the final game of the regular season, the Barbs beat el i St. Charles in a 35-7 blowout, and gained a berth into the state playoffs. Beating Rockton-Hononegah, 21-14, in the first game of the playoffs, sent the Barbs to the quarterfinal match with Wheaton North. The 1981 football team, which was the first team ever to win the Upstate Eight Conference outright, was paced by eight All-Conference selections. Leading the elite group on offense was split-end Curt Pardridge, quarterback Kirk Taylor and offensive tackle Matt Van Kirk. The defensive team was led by linebacker Mark Kalal, end Ron Bradt, end Bill Eike, back Chris Bejbl and back Doug Mallory. Head Coach Chuck Schrader was quoted many times during the season, calling this team as one of clutch performances. The Barbs won six out of nine of their games by seven points or less, also winning the second most games in Dekalb's history. The Barbs surely defined the phrase Clutch Performance. . .Mafia fwblihiiilj ' My el 5 F lj f TO, J' Wt-V Maha ot . J t we at of A tx,,50Afi,X'U5JJ Gy OW' A VX? c ' 51 PM R I J 1 -iw .Q Q9 F59
