The opening day . . . scared stiff!! We were awed by the mighty seniors. Remember the Harvest Moon dance . . . our first Y-Teens formal, Black Magic, and mom chaperoned. We were busy joining clubs . . . we finally won our last football game and the Barbs were runner-up to West Rockford in the Basketball Sectional. Spring came and before we knew it, our first year had come to a close. 1954 . . . Our Sophomore year . . . dancing in the Social Room during the noon hour . . . the boys seldom danced but they made up for it with those impromptu jam sessions. The Frosh-Soph football team was undefeated . . . a wrestling team was started. Avenue of Dreams was the Y-Teens formal and a few brave girls asked upperclassmen . . . biology field trips . . . and remember when the football field be- came Speed-Boat Haven. 1955 . . . Varsity football . . . we were big wheels now. Class rings . . . split lunch hour . . . Barbarians played at the basketball games . . . Nolin to State in wrestling. Stunt Night . . . Y-Teens formal was A Little Bit of Heaven and our first prom was Garden of Dreams' '... DeKalb's Centennial brought long dresses, beards, sideburns. and Kangaroo Kourt . . . Wife suddenly realized we had only one 'ear left. 5 1956 . . . Seniors at last! Diamonds became the girls' best friends . . . the dances began to show new life and the boys danced! Mr. Berge became Superintendent of Schools . . . the Play of the Artisans went to State . . . Elvis was the rage.. .J Y-Teens formal was Crystal Christmas and our last prom was Portrait of Spring. Remember the famous saying, Barf, I sure do, and You'd know. Gerner Goose Anderson and Dick Anderson are honored for being named first team and hon- orable mention respectively on the all-conference basketball Q22 Miss Edith Wentu'orth, a teacher who will always remain close to the hearts of her many students, is retiring after thirty-three years of service at DeKalb High School, team. Miss Wentworth is completing a long career during which she has taught Latin, French, and English. She has also been speech and debate coach for many years. She has been president of the Illinois Education Association and has been very active in the Business and Professional Women's Club. Forced to end her outstanding career three years early because of illness, Miss Wfentworth leaves with the warm good wishes of all her many students. FX! Congratulations to the D3C members who were state winners in junior Academy of Science. Receiving Outstand- ing Awards were jerry johnson and Margaret Schiesser. Firsts were won by Bonnie Duncan, Bryce Plapp, Dave Randall, Chuck Koritz, Ron Bergsten, and Warren Porter. Bryce Plapp was also honored as a National Science Talent Search winner. The Kalibre commends Donald Abramson, who qualified for the state speech contest with his cutting from The Man Who Came to Dinner, a humorous play reading. DeKalb High School was well represented by eight di- vision one superior ratings in the state band music contest. Solo performers receiving superior ratings were Alan Rose- lieb, Robert Engstrom, Bradley Bluhm, and Charles Dayton. We salute the ensembles that received first division ratings. These were composed of Dawn Mathre, Alberta Nelson, Susan Childs, Alan Roselieb, Arnold Lehto, Michael Gordon, Charles Arthur, Bradley Bluhm, David Schroeder, Floyd Schroeder, Charles Griffin, joan Beardsley, and William Aspengren. An excellent job was turned in by the following chorus members, john Anderson, Lu Ann Marth, Marianna Willey, Carolyn Dieter, Mary Ann Sanderson, Alison Weed, Shirley Nelson, and Mary Hayter. They all received awards at the music contest which was held at Northern Illinois Univer- sity. The names of those boys that appear on these plaques will be remembered for a long time to come. They are to be commended for the fine character and sportsmanship they displayed throughout the year. Commendation is due several students for individual honors. Mary Carlson won the Voice of Democracy con- test. The Homemaker of Tomorrow award was given to Chelon Pottenger, who also was named American Legion Girl Good Citizen. Bryce Plapp was the first D.H.S. student to receive an honorable mention in the Science Talent Search. Dawn Mathre is also to be congratulated for placing second in the state Elks Essay contest. Congratulations to the cast of The Play of the Artisans, a cutting from Shakespeare's A Mid- summer Night's Dream. The play was awarded third place in the state contest. The cast was com- posed of Donald Boganrief, Donald Abramson, Charles Dayton, jerry Hallaron, james Raddatz, and Herbert Rauworth with Mr. jeffryes as di- rector.
