These types include humorous read- ing, verse speaking, serious read- ing oratorical declamation origi nal oratory and extemporaneous speaking High school speech activities gave students opportunities for competi tion with students of other high schools in the state After student speakers had prepared and practiced their work to near perfection they went to the Individual Speech Contest at Rochelle on February 17 Students who won in this tourney competed in the District Contest February Z7. From the district meet, student speakers advanced to the Sectional Speech Contest on March 10. Q if gi 3 f fi ,dv l' .3 Coach George Dertinger has built his team around three returning lettermen and members of last year's Frosh-Soph squad which had an outstanding record. The letter- men were .Tack Carpenter, .Tim Elliott, and Don Silverman. The Barbs in their first six games met some very stiff opposition in Free- port, Elgin, and Sycamore, but man- aged to come through with a 3 and 3 record, when Holiday Tournament time rolled around, DeKalb's first opponent was Arlington Heights, whom they defeated 44-40. Then came Belvidere and a win with the score of 48-47. DeKalb then entered the semi-finals and dealt West Aurora a stunning 67-38 defeat in which .Tack Carpenter broke the in- dividual scoring record set the night before by Roger Swedberg of Syca- more. In the finals the Barbs lost to the highly rated Rock Island team. Following the tournament the Barbs were victorious over Geneseo, Pro- viso, and Hall before they dropped their first conference game to the Ottawa Pirates. Following this the Barbs took in stride such teams as Canton, Mendota, and Rochelle be- fore they were stopped by a strong Sycamore team. They followed with their second conferenceloss to a hot-shooting Rock Falls team. At the end of the season, Rock Falls and DeKalb were tied for the cham- pionship of the N.C.I.C.
