This change was made because it was generally felt that the year- book needed a more significant title. In a contest students were asked to submit names. Later the subscribers to the annual voted on a name. The title, Panorama, suggesting an all-over View of the school year, submitted by Philip Myers, a Senior, received the highest number of votes. It is hoped that this first issue of The Panorama will be the first in a long series of yearbooks depicting the life at Defiance High School both in and out of the classrooms. 2 IIEDIIIATIU This yearbook is dedicated to all the alumni oi Defiance High School who are serving, or have served, their country in the Korean Conflict. These alumni are doing their best to preserve our way oi life and deserve the greatest honor possible. 3 THE STAFF... The Southland Singers, a male Negro quariette, were the first outside visitors. Ioseph Hardin was excellent on the violin and Iim Lynch showed some tricks in archery before The Allens arrived to put on a very interesting assembly, showing how different sound effects are made on radio, television, and in the movies. Between the Thanksgiving Assembly, which was sponsored by the Boosters and the Choir, and the Christmas Assembly presented by the Choir, sev- eral movie shorts were enjoyed. These included Teen-A-Cide and The Quarterback. The Chief of Police, Mr. Nestleroad, talked to the students in a Safety Assembly. One of the most enjoyable assemblies was a tenor soloist, Mr. Pruth McFar1in, who sang a Varied program. When February arrived, the Iuniors presented the prevues of their class play, It's Never Too Late. Many D.H.S. students took part in the World Af- fairs Assembly, Latin Club Initiation Assembly, and the Hi-Y Brotherhood Assembly. A very interesting and educational discussion on Latin America was given by Mr. Don Bolt, a famed lecturer from Brazil, Indiana. This year's band-exchange-concert was with Wau- seon and their band was enjoyed by all. The Dramatics Class presented a one-act play, One Happy Family. Following the Hi-Y Easter Assembly, a Safety As- sembly and some other movie shorts including How to Catch a Cold, Iunior Prom, and Dinner Party were presented to the student body. In April the Defiance College Choir presented an excellent program. The Seniors then took the spotlight in the last three assemblies when the prevue of their class play, Every Family Has One was followed by the Recognition Day Assembly and last but not least the annual Senior Assembly. l. The 1952 pigskin season was a big one for D.H.S. as the Bulldogs rolled to another league championship with a seven won and one lost record. Their lone defeat came at the hands of un- beaten Van Wert, ninth ranking team in the state of Ohio. Gene Baldwin and Bob Sabo carried the burden of the backfield, while the entire Bulldog for- ward wall, led by Dave Pelok and captain-elect Max Wallar, played stellar football the whole season. At the conclusion of the season, Dave Pelok was voted to an honorable-mention berth on the Ohio All-State team by INS. All-League representatives from D.H.S. were: lst team: Max Wal- lar, Pete Marihugh, Harvey Boyce, Ioe Doody, and Gene Baldwin: 2nd team: Bob Sabo, Ierry Warnimont, and Paul Baldwin. Honorable Mentions went to Bill McGue and Wayne Ort. The purpose of Iunior High football is to impress on future gridiron players the fundamentals of football. The 1952 squad ended their season with a three and three record. They started off with a resounding 28-O win over Montpelier. Van Wert turned the tables on the Pups and defeated them 26-7. Napoleon followed suit with a 27-7 victory. The Pups balked after two straight losses and defeated Bryan 13-6 and Wauseon 21-7. Their season ended with a loss to Liberty Center 12-6. Basketball around D.H.S. this year was not the same as it has been for quite some time. The Bulldogs were hampered by the fact that they had no home court, and had to practice on the Armory hardwood. Nevertheless, the Bulldogs tredded through the season to compile a record of ten wins and eight losses, while being dropped from tourney play in their first contest by League Champ Napoleon. Because of graduation the Bulldogs will lose the services of five regular boys who have, for the most part, played an important role in varsity basket- ball at D.H.S. for the past three years. These players are Bob Myers, Bill Stambaugh, Gary Wagner, Bill McGue, and Paul Baldwin. A fine crop of underclassmen, though, were present to prove their ability on the hardwoods. Head Coach Max Gecowets and his assistant, Merle McDonald, were the mentors of the 1953 hoopster squad. 97 X 1. FMVW Q ? It is this training that helps to prepare the boys for reserve and varsity basketball. Coach Hampshire and his Freshman basketball squad tied for the top rung of the League ladder this season. while also being runners-up in the N.W.O.L. Frosh basketball tournament behind Montpelier. Their entire sea- son's record, including tournament play, added up to nine wins and six losses. Ronnie Powell led the Freshman quintet in scoring by dumping in 135 points during the regular season for an average of 11.2 markers per game. Other Frosh with commendable scoring records were Tom Hale, Phil Hoeffel, Larry Pelok, and Ronnie Funk. 101 TRACK The 1952 Track and Field squad, by hard work cmd strong competitive spirit, turned in a most profitable season, a season in which two school records were broken. The team was coached by Mr. Cowan and assisted by Mr. Zimmerman. The first of these new records is held by Bill Stambaugh, who high jumped 5 feet 9 inches against Liberty Center. Stambaugh was also valuable in the the set out low hurdles. The second of these records is held by that speed demon in dashes, Gary Wagner. Wagner ran the 440 yard dash in 51.4 seconds to a new school record. ln the League Meet, Wagner took four first places of four events, the most that anyone can take. To top off the feats of speed, Gary went to Columbus to participate in the State Track Meet and placed fourth in the 440 dash. Other outstanding performers were: Bob Osborn in the high hurdles and high jump: Gene Baldwin, Pete Marihugh, Gaylen Ordway, and Bill Stam- baugh in the relays: Bill Heilman in the mile run: and Wagner in the broad jump, 100 and 220 yard dashes.
