Balmy weather with sun-filled skies and new activities including the Enders Student Union Window painting contest upped the homecoming fever. Queen Candice Shinners, a West Spring- field, Massachusetts, senior, was crowned by last year's queen Kathy Kneeshaw. Elected to the Queen's court were Teri Swaninger, Pioneer, Kathryn Barnhardt, Lima, Laura Nordhaus, Ottawa, and Mel- vina Pinn, Lynchburg, Virginia. TKE's ingenious Road Runner float took first place in the cartoon inspired parade, barely nosing out Theta Xi's color- ful Tom Slick who was seated in a mean looking, smoke belching dragster. Another interpretation of the Road Runner won the window decoration prize for Alpha Zi Delta. Bugs Bunny and Yosemite Sam charmed lVlcReynolds Hall residents and captured first prize in building decora- tions for McReynolds Hall. Following the game there were fraterni- ty and sorority open houses and the annual Varsity D banquet featuring alumnus and former Defiance coach Gilbert Smith '28, .1 'gr Hom l 0 ' V? 1, i it I BI ' 1 H 4 ,Q v 3' P5 A .gk Q 4 gr,-we. f'5f6'.1 l:'f1'a 7 -7. ..Y.,Y .,.,,, ,,,,. ..,,.4....,,, , ,, ,A ,, A,.,,-....,,, ,... ,.,,,, W ,Mm ,, M, lf ki -'41 i 1' 352' ESQ? -' bu g, wi xv 'gg.g. 1 ,-QQ . ?f- if :K Q f A 4? ? ix MP1 inter Term In January of 1969, The Defiance College-operating under a 41124 academic calendar-conducted its second Winter Term or Interim Term. The general format of Winter Term 1969 did not alter in any significant way the approach employed last year since there are still three types of program available during January. First, Winter Term Independent Study continued to be extremely popular with the students. This year, approximately 140 students worked closely with faculty members to develop their own tailor-made programs. Each proposal was approved first by the supervising professor, then by the chairman of the department in which the student will be working and finally by the Winter Term Committee. Unlike Winter Term 1968, which usually restricted independent study to juniors and seniors, stu- dents from all four classes may now submit proposals for independent work. The second part of the Winter Term consisted of faculty-designed proposals which were available to the students on a group basis. Winter Term studies, however, are not like regular courses found in the regu- lar college catalog. They are special studies designed to capitalize on the flexibility which is a real part of the Winter Term. Some of the studies employ formats which would be awkward in a regular semester. For instance, some studies require taking the students away from campus for an extended period in order to conduct a successful investi- gationg other studies are experimentaliprograms Where new concepts or approaches are being tested-the Hperiod for innovation, still other studies deal with special facets of larger subjects, facets which warrant special and detailed attention even though such attention cannot be given when the facet is simply a part of a larger course. A list of faculty-designed studies is published in the spring, with the students deciding which studies they would like to enter. In all cases, a faculty member and a student may carry a 1-unit load during January. Finally, there is'the Freshman Program, which is strongly student- centered and student-generated. During the fall, the freshmen met several times during their orientation class to discuss what they would like to M '9 ff .,.,,.,,.y ,, , uf- 'dn ,WWW do during the Winter Term. lnitially, a general meeting was used to explain the concept of the Winter Term, after which the students were asked for suggestions. Once the original suggestions were collected into groups, six large section meetings were used to bring together those stu- dents who were interested in the same general area. ln these section meetings, the students gave some form to the suggested topics which they thought were best suited to a Winter Term. Finally, a list of specific freshman-created topics was published, and a third meeting was arranged with each student attending the meeting of greatest interest to him. During this meeting, the students continued developing the possible ideas related to the topic, dealing with such matters as sub-themes, re- sources, format, possible field trips, etc. When the freshmen registered in mid November each specified three choices. The final list of Fresh- man studies was selected through student interest. After this final list of studies was established, faculty members were invited to join groups of interest to them. The faculty member serves as a resource person during January, giving suggestions when it is appropriate. But the main responsibility for a suc- cessful Freshman program rests squarely on the shoulders of the Fresh- man Class. ln order to help encourage success, two modifications were made over last year. First, the program of student-generated studies no longer includes sophomores. It is believed there will be stronger group cohesion if the Freshmen work without the sophomores. Second, this year the participants in the student-generated part of the Winter Term were free to move from one group to another. Last year the groups were kept intact, this year the student moved to a topic of greatest interest. lt has sometimes been charged that the content of the Freshman Program seems strange in a College setting, but we are convinced the program has real merit. One must understand, however, that it stresses goals different from those sought in the regular semesters. Instead of emphasizing content, the Freshman Program is directed toward process-it is hoped that through their freshman Winter Term experience the students will begin to understand what is required to organize an academic study around any given topic. Once the students comprehend the process of organization and realize the procedures one can use in order to collect and analyze data, they will be in a much better position to take an active part in their own education-not only through independent work, but also within regular classes. Following the tough Quincy, Illinois, Holiday Tournament, in which they lost three straight, the .lackets played .500 ball, winning eight and dropping eight. However, that was good enough to share lVl.O.C. co-champion- ship honors with Cedarville, and earn a berth in the N.A.l.A. District 22 playoffs. The loss of only two seniors from the var- sity squad promises a good 1969-70 season. Alpha Xi Delta sorority,,hased on the principles of friendship and service, was founded nationally in 1893, and on The Defiance College campus in 1964. Helping to renew the Fuzzieis sisterhood in the fall was the traditional rose arch which the girls proudly formed for their sisters, the Queen and two attendants. Other fall activities ranged from sponsoring a psychedelic dance to collecting for the Greek food drive. Christmas brought two parties: one for the children at the Defiance Home and one for the sisters. Winter was exciting and husy for the sisters as plans were made for the rush party, wllhe Grand Opening oi the Golden Quill. The most eagerly wished-for event of the year was the Rose Formal h ld h e at t e Black Angus in Kalida. The new spring pledges grew in sisterhood and unity as they worked for the Defiance Hospital and the Historical Society. After formal initiation of the 19 new sisters, the annual picnic was held at Harrison Lake. An exciting afternoon's competition brought the girls their second consecutive win at Spring Olympics. The love and high ideals that the sisters stand for in Delta Pi chapter were reinforced when they hosted the Province Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, and the Alphas now look forward to another successful year. . . - KOhl1 Jessrca . The Beta Sigma Sorority is a local sorority on The Defiance College campus. During the past year the sisters sponsored many social events for the campus. Their fall event, the HI-larvest Happening dance was enjoyed by all. ' The Beta sisters continued their support of twelve-year-old Shirley Burke, an Indian girl on an Arizona reservation. Close correspondence with Shirley has been a wonderful experience for the sisters. - . c, ... c , I The Betas participated in the All-Campus Sing and after many practices were happy to place first with their MDO Re Mi and uExodus.', Throughout the year the Betas have participated in many campus events. They have also participated in several community service projects, includ- ing a Christmas visit to an area convalescent home. This spring the Betas took a large pledge class of 23. The pledges spon- sored a very successful turn-about Western dance. 5-is , P C d, Jo Hatch, Barb L-R, First: JoAnn Stefell, Terry AICIICT, Bonme Sihalg. The Gamma Omega Kappa Sorority enjoyed a very productive fifty- second year of fun and fellowship. ln the fall, the Gammas were busy with the Inter-Sorority Float, the annual mum sale, and the alumnae tea. The annual dinner dance, held at the Milano Club in Lima, brought the girls together with their dates for a night of dining and dancing followed p by a hayride. As their campus event, the Gammas sponsored a successful Faculty Varsity Show which was well attended by the campus. Second semester saw the Cammas pledge twenty-seven busy Devil pledges. The girls, representing the largest Gamma pledge class kept the actives on their toes for most of the semester. The Founders' Day Banquet was held April 19 in the Bed Booster Boom of the Tip Top. This is an event looked forward to by all Cammas. The Cammas were also seen during the year as ushers for the College Community Concerts. Visiting the Cood.Sama1'itan School, and campaign- ing for the lVlother's lVlarch on Birth Defects were other activities' of the Gamma Omega Kappa Sorority. .f ! ,ff 'f! ,ff 'ff' ,, ff! - fl 0 V' my Z. Phi Sigma Chi Fraternity took another giant step forward during its second full year. In the fall of 1968, Phi Sigma Chi took its second pledge class of ten men, and entered its first float in the annual Homecoming Parade competition. In February, the fraternity moved into its new house at 409 Nicholas Street, which houses ten of the brothers. The Brotherhood also renovated the barn located behind the house into a recreation cente1'. l2O y L R In the spring of 1969, Phi Sigma Chi again took thirteen pledges, raising the membership to fifty-six, making a threefold growth in only two years. The Brotherhood climaxed its year b y petitioning Sigma Phi Epsilon National Fraternity. The year's social life was capped by a very successful Christmas Formal and the annual Spring Formal. ff F ll l Don Sanborn Bob Bentl6Y1 GHTY Sheehan' Second: Crawford Lewls . Tau Kappa Epsilon, as an international fraternity, was founded on January 10, 1899 and has grown over the years to become the largest international fraternity in the world. The Iota Phi Chapter of The De- fiance College was granted a charter on February 29, 1960 after being a local fraternity on campus since 1921. The past school year has been a rewarding one for the members of Tau Kappa Epsilon. The annual Homecoming float competition was won by the fraternity with the HRoad-Runner. Second place was awarded to the fraternity in the house decorations. With a widely diversified membership, the Tekes are represented in all aspects of campus life including student government, scholarship, and I22 athletics. Group participation is the key to the success of the fraternity. During Wintel' Term there was much diversified study. Two members went to a tropical island for a survival test for the entire month. The fraternity has been making plans for a new fraternity house to accommodate thirty-five men. It is hoped that the house will be completed during the next school year. Fifteen new members were initiated in the Spring. This summer many of the members will be travelling to the National Conclave. The membership of Tau Kappa Epsilon is presently eighty-four. It is the largest TKE chapter in the area. The advisors are faculty members James Bray and James Privett. I . ff George Flower, Pledge Danny . - ldg J hn Powers: Pledee D ., ' M h. The Brothers of Theta Xi are truly excited over the accomplishments made by the fraternity this school year. The competition for the Home- coming float honors was extremely stiff again this year and although we were unable to capture first place honors, we were pleased with the ex- cellent participation by the brothers. The next event on our calendar was our all campus event. This was a dance held at Enders Student Union with a theme of uThe Roaring Twentiesf' The cafeteria was decorated in such a way that it resembled a funeral parlor with a speakeasy located behind this legitimate cover-up. The Brothers used ingenuity coupled with hard work to come up with such ideas as bathtub gin fa real bathtub for serving refreshmentsj to old Charlie Chaplin movies running concurrently with the dance. The dance drew more acclaim from students and faculty than any dance held in many years here at Defiance. During Wintei' Term, definite plans were formulated for the actual l24 building of the house. We took it upon ourselves to work diligently on all activities concerning our new house. We now plan to be in a new house, located at our previous address, by the end of next semester. We initiated 35 new brothers from our Spring pledge class which makes the number of active brothers at an all-time high. We are very pleased with the addition of the men for they are the type of men who will uphold the ideals of Theta Xi. We cannot close without mentioning yet another accomplishment of the Brothers of Theta Xi this school year and that is the winning of the Spring Olympics, which was a most satisfying victory. The Brothers of Theta Xi are on the threshold of a new era in which we will see new living accommodations, new members to increase and fervor the idea of brotherhood and a time of sincere dedication toward meeting the goals set for Theta Xi. 1 'rr . During the first semester, it increased its publication from once to twice weekly. After expeyi. menting with this change for several months, the staff decided that a larger, once-a-week'production would bet. ter serve its purposes. Working with this new format, the staff was able to add to the newspaper: new columns 'by both students and faculty members, articles of national scope from two collegiate press services, and a section entitled HFocus, which was an attempt to do in-depth studies of campus issues. af if 1 K 9 -X X 1 5. The prime purpose of the American Marketing Association is to serve as a mediator between the student's classroom work and his first job upon graduation. The Defiance Chapter is one of many chapters throughout the entire United States forming a national organization which has a Central Service Office in Chicago. The theme used by the Defiance Chapter during the 1968-69 year was aBridging the Gap. The members attempted to Hbridge the gap normally found between the college graduate and the professional businessman. This was attempted by becoming acquainted with as many different opportunities available in the business world as possible. The organization had speakers from Dunn 81 Bradstreet, Honeywell, IBM, Central Found- ries, Compo Corporation, and Powell Company. Tours were sponsored to Central Foundries and Defiance Hospital. Several films were shown during the year coveringawide array of business topics. Each month members attended an area meeting in Toledo. Herethey had an opportunity to share their successes and problems with other area college A.M.A. chapters. These meetings were also well attended by leaders in area business concerns, thus members got first-hand information and insight into just what and how to prepare themselves for future successful business careers. Careerudays were held at Marathon in Findlay, Owens Illinois, Champion, and other large companies in T0- ledo. Senior interviews were held for members in Chicago by a wide selection of different companies. All this was planned with the idea of aiding the individual student in finding just the right job and better p1'C' paring him for this job.
