They arrive a little scared of what lies ahead, lout confident of succeeding. The returning student struts back ready to attack a new year, remembering only the good times: dances, card games, gab sessions, and TV. And then some of the returning students find that hard road off probation is ahead. Yet to everyone each tall is a new chance with many new faces. 3 New students become acquainted at annual Freshman Picnic sponsored by Defiance business men at Independence Pork. Any day of the week, at any hour, and in any kind of weath- er, you may see a lone figure, with head slightly bent in contemplation, striding slowly but deliberately about the cam- pus. Contemplation, deliberation and a delightful sense of humor characterizes President McCann. As former assistant to President Eisenhower and as spokesman for The Defiance Col- lege, Dr. McCann needs no introduction. A man with a vision, deep convictions, and ability to get things done, he has re- alized a dream-come-true in little more than a decade. ln August, 'l95l, when Dr. McCann arrived to assume his du- ties as President, The Defiance College, struggling for survival both financially and academically, consisted of four main buildings, a muddy campus, and an enrollment of 180 full- time students. Deeply concerned for the future of small church-related colleges in the United States, Dr. and Mrs. Mc- Cann investigated The Defiance College. They discovered possibilities and potential in the devotion of the students, fac- ulty, and alumni who were attempting to face and overcome a crucial period in the history of the College. The McCanns gambled on large plans at rather great odds based on their convictions that The Defiance College was worthy of effort and sacrifice. President McCann says of his first semester here: The spirit of the students was terrific. Most of them had to work their way. I never realized before that people could be so desperately short of cash, nor had I ever realized so sharply the meaning of 'poor and proud.' And we had a lot of fun. 11 Consultation After the show Immediately before -and during President Eisenhow- er's administration, Dr. McCann was called to Wash- ington several times. During these periods, Mrs. Mc- Cann was appointed Acting President of the Col- lege. Dr. McCann states, Those days, we were still a very small school, .almost a family sized college. A woman who had seen a great deal of the world, who possessed a strong concern for academic excel- lence, and still had a soft heart and a tremendous sense of humor, was probably the ideal person to manage the college. The present high campus spirit and morale in faculty and student body alike, l think, is largely rooted in her work. The McCanns have worked as a team in their interest and concern for The Defiance College, -and as a result many of their goals and high hopes have been realized, In a period of twelve years, the progress of a small struggling college has been remarkable. Ten new buildings have been built, including men's and wom- en's dormitories, a library, -a student union, and a new academic building with faculty offices and a lec- ture hall auditorium. The enrollment from 1951-1963 About dorms has risen from 180 to 750 students. A maximum en- rollment of 950 is planned for 1970 with additional campus housing. Also, during this time, the academic standing of the College has risen to the level of na- tional accreditation. On the immediate agenda for the building program are an additional wing to the library and a physical education building. President McCann's dream for the future includes a field house and a church. President and Mrs. McCann are pleased with the present progress and status of the College, although they never lose sight of their ultimate goals for im- provement. Administration, faculty, alumni, and stu- dents who are acquainted with D.C. 1963, and who have contributed the spirit and devotion to which the McCanns refer, can truly be proud of the purple and gold. They can be proud of the two people who have given their leadership and a faith that knew it could be done. The Senior Class of 1963 offers this dedication of indebtedness and appreciation to President and Mrs. Kevin McCann. .IFC - Leaving the big top THE DEFIANCE COLLEGE DEFIANCE, OHIO THE PRESIDENT TO THE CLASS OF I963 The congratulations and best wishes I addressed to each of you personally at Com- mencement on Sunday, May 26, I963, I now repeat for the permanent record in this issue of the Oraculum. To them, I add from my heart my personal and official thanks for the contribution the members of your class made to the Campus and College and Community through the past four years. That you added to the good name and repute of Defiance, during your student years, is evidence of your capacity for creative and productive citizenship through all the years to come. With all who have known you as students, I am joined in the prayer that you live up to all the opportunities and the challenges that will comfort you, bringing. to all problems before you the faith in yourselves and in your fellowmen, fortified by faith in a provi- dent God. And I must add a paraphrase of what Dwight D. Eisenhower said to you in his Com- mencement Address here: Except for the inescapable obstacle imposed by almost forty years' difference in our ages, I'd be proud to follow where you will lead. FOOTBALL Compiling a 5-3 record, Defiance finished in a three-way tie for the Mid-Ohio Conference football title. The Yellow Jackets gave a hint of things to come when they opened with a 20-7 win over Adrian. Skeeter Baumhower took two passes from Tom Gryzainski for touchdowns and fullback Terry Schnell added the other. ln the second contest, a 14-13 win over league foe Ashland, Gryzwin- ski connected with freshman end Barry Jones for -a last-minute TD that spelled victory. Gene Peluso then booted the extra point and the Jackets had their first Mid-Ohio win of the year. Bluffton dished out a 31-19 football lesson before the Jackets got back on the winning side with a 14-8 hardfought win over Wilming- ton. The air arm was again the difference as Grzywinski hit Baum- hower and Mike Snyder for the TD's. DELTA CHI RHO After a successful nine months as a local organization, the men of Delta Chi Rho af- filiated with Tau Kappa Epsilon, the largest international fraternity in the National ln- ter-fraternity conference. TKE has twelve other chapters in Ohio, which increases the possibilities for social and fraternal activities for the men at Defiance. Through associa- tion with these other chapters, the Defiance chapter has developed character unique to all TKE chapters. lt feels that these associations will help in the development of the character of each one of its men, and thus increase the advantages of his college edu- cation. Delta Chi Rho provides a select group of undergraduates with opportunities for increased social activities and a high-quality bond of friendship. A wide range of personalities broadens the social and personal qualities of each man, supplementing to a large degree the ,academic training provided by the college. During the past year, Delta Chi Rho took third place in the homecoming float contest. As the year progressed they had many closed house parties which are part of the social advantages provided by a college fraternity. Then in May, while still an affiliate, the chapter held iointly with Gamma Nu chapter lToledo Universityl its first annual Festival of the Red Carnation. This dance was held at the Toledo Yacht Club, and was the most successful dance in the history of the fraternity. At present, there are fifty active members in Delta Chi Rho. The advisor is Mr. Peter Van't Slot, professor of business at Defiance. Merger talks between the frater- nities began in March. The presidents of the fraternities appointed special committees to study and discuss the possible merger after informal talks indicated that it would be ben- eficial to both organizations. The merger combines the strengths of both organizations into a stronger Theta Xi. The former Ohio Zeta chapter of Kappa Sigma at The Defiance College was formally installed into Theta Xi on November 17, 1962. Kappa Nu was the official chap- ter designation. Theta Xi is a social fraternity interested in the ideas of brotherhood and scholarship. The fraternity is open to -any male student of the college who meets the requirements of the college, the fraternity, and the membership. The chapter has an active membership of forty-tive men and maintains a house at 517 N. Clinton Street. Many social events, both open and closed, were held by the members throughout the year. Two of the special events were the Winter Carnival and the Sweetheart Dance. The Winter Carnival was held a week after Christmas vacation. The night started with an ice-skating party followed by a dance. The Sweetheart Dance is considered the social height of the year. The theme for this year's dance was 'Evening in Paris.' Decorations consisted of sidewalk cafes, complete with fountains and the Arch of Triumph. Miss Joyce Filce, escorted by John Naylor, was crowned Sweetheart of the Dance. Homecoming has always been a special event for Theta Xi and this year was no different. The chapter was again honored to take first place in the f1oat parade, an award that has been taken six out of the last seven years. The Phi Delts started their year in traditional fashion as they reunited for a week of fun and planning at Catawba Island on Lake Erie. From there, they found themselves launched into Homecoming Weekend. Many honors fell to the Phi Delts that weekend when they saw one of the sisters, Marsha Renz, crowned Homecoming Queen and their float win second place. Big Chiefs and Little Squaws were invited in November to attend the Phi Delts Campus Pow Wow. December was the month for season's greetings and the time to receive a pair of oversized mittens. Sister Donna Harper reigned as Christmas Dance queen. The Phi Delts went formal in April as they treated their dates to an evening of dining and dancing at the Aku Aku in Toledo. May was in some ways the biggest month of the year for the sorority. lt became nationally affiliated with Alpha Xi, and Sue Seibenick was crowned May Day Queen. 9' tl. - -vt .gif FRONT ROW: Mrs. Elizabeth Wursf, Ginny Gander, Jeannine Sell, Karen Crozier, Pam Walker, Ruth Ann Ireton, Pat Sprenkel, Karen Leyman, Mrs. Charles Hemlein. After vigorous Homecoming activities, the sorority adopted Shirley Brouke, a six-year old Apache Indian. The Annual Christmas Party centered around Shirley as the sisters ,contributed towards a surprise package, which was sent to her in Arizona. Valentine's Day was highlighted on campus with the Beta Sigma Cupid's Caper. Mardi Gras was the rush party theme, as the Student Union was magically turned into the streets of New Orleans. From a sidewalk cafe, through a fun-filled pledge period the active sisters and pledges worked together to the culmination of events, formal initiation of 19 pledges. Westbrook's of Wauseon was the scene of the Spring Outing as Beta Sigma climaxed o successful year. Since that time the group has worked to uphold the principles it was founded on: sisterhood, service, and friendship. During this past year the sorority has participated in many events. Homecoming brought with it the building of a fioat, the selling of mums, and an open house in the apartment for all Gamma Alumni. Gamma President Sylvia Grogg was chosen Senior Class Repre- sentative on the Homecoming Court. At Christmas, Gamma Omega Kappa sponsored a needy family in Defiance. Clothes, toys and food were bought so as to make their Christmas a memorable one. The Annual Holiday Party was held at the home of Professor and Mrs. Albert Chaffoo. Among other events sponsored were: two all-campus dances, a World University Service project, and an active-pledge party. The Rushing Program this year was very successful. All were very pleased to see the new sisters take their final pledge of membership. The year ended with a farewell pic- nic tor all graduating seniors. w I T . fl' ' it 'Rx 7 -nd , W. Q . The beatnik dance was a high point of the first'yearp and many remember the day the cafeteria was moved from Trowbridge to the Student Union. In the sophomore year the Sunday night that Weston Hall burned will never be forgotten. Enthusiastic, but a- little shy, the freshmen entered the Union, wondering why they were there. They soon found out. It was to stand in line for registration, annual pictures, meals, and convocations. Then came Hell Week, Homecoming, and then the first Freshman activity, the Christmas Dance. After Finals, and mid-semester break, came a lull in activities, broken by the Trowbridge Hall Party. Later there was Spring Weekend, Easter Vacation, the May Dance, and finals again the end of the first year. 122 F R E H .
