mothyst Ihome Deering High has as great a tradition as scholarship to maintain. She is one of many hundreds of high schools that represent the shield of Democracy's defense against Communism and Fascism. This shield of defense is forged of the attitudes, the beliefs and the hopes of all young high school Americans. It is compounded of everyday school living, of respect for one another, of sportsmanship, of hard clean play. Deering specializes in this. Her students are organized in nearly all sports playing in High School. Her clubs and activities range from the hobby of taking snapshots, to the fabrication of bows and arrows. Her students bowl, swim, broadcast, collect stamps, debate, issue newspapers, publish books, drill, sing, play musical instruments, ski, paint, ride horses, go to Washington, write, dramatize, choral, and serve in the Cafeteria. This is the material that will make the future America. Of this material is the theme of our 1948 Amethyst. The best defense against foreign idealogy is not a gun or bayonet or atomic bomb, but a stronger, more powerful idea. Deering tries to teach this idea. Democracy through action is that idea. It is learning how to live and play democratically by actually living and learning the process. To show how Deering does this, we dedicate this Amethyst. This is the theme of our 1948 boolc. Turn the pages and see for yourself. l D . 4
