HERBERT PAUL D The class of 1948 dedicates this volume to a teacher who has been a member of the faculty of Deering High School for seventeen years, first as Miss Margaret Abbott and later as Mrs. Herbert Paul. She is a graduate of Colby College and has completed work for an M.A. degree at the University of New Hampshire. Her record provesher success in her profession. Her vivid delineations of characters . in literature have made fictional people like David Copperfield live for her students, her patience has helped many perplexed boys and girls to gain the ability to speak and write more clearly, her respect for youth has given the individuals in her classes that confidence in themselves which is so necessary to happiness in school worlcg her pleasure in student activities is attested by her chaperoning excursions to Washington and her guidance of the staffs of Ram-Blings. Though she has been valuable as a sincere, witty, capable instructor in English, Mrs. Paul will be best remembered as an understanding friend to students and faculty alike. We wish Mrs. Paul a very happy future in her new home in Philadelphia. EIDICATIID mothyst Ihome Deering High has as great a tradition as scholarship to maintain. She is one of many hundreds of high schools that represent the shield of Democracy's defense against Communism and Fascism. This shield of defense is forged of the attitudes, the beliefs and the hopes of all young high school Americans. It is compounded of everyday school living, of respect for one another, of sportsmanship, of hard clean play. Deering specializes in this. Her students are organized in nearly all sports playing in High School. Her clubs and activities range from the hobby of taking snapshots, to the fabrication of bows and arrows. Her students bowl, swim, broadcast, collect stamps, debate, issue newspapers, publish books, drill, sing, play musical instruments, ski, paint, ride horses, go to Washington, write, dramatize, choral, and serve in the Cafeteria. This is the material that will make the future America. Of this material is the theme of our 1948 Amethyst. The best defense against foreign idealogy is not a gun or bayonet or atomic bomb, but a stronger, more powerful idea. Deering tries to teach this idea. Democracy through action is that idea. It is learning how to live and play democratically by actually living and learning the process. To show how Deering does this, we dedicate this Amethyst. This is the theme of our 1948 boolc. Turn the pages and see for yourself. l D . 4 I3rincipal's Message To Class Of 1948 Ac no time in the history of our country has there been greater appreciation of the value of an education. There is always a need for technical skills and education aut0- matically supplies the demand. However, the paramount present concern of thinking people has to do with human relationships. Here again, the citizens of this country look to education for help in a time of trouhle. It is my hope that your experiences at Deering will serve you in your chosen career as well as remain among your pleasantest memories. It is an even greater hope that here you have begun the development of a personal set of values which will not only guide you well but will also enable you to make your fullest contribution to the betterment of society wherever you may he. The Pathfinders' Club One of the best known clubs of its kind in Portland is the Pathfinders' Club of Deering and Lincoln junior High Schools, consisting of mothers of the students. Scholarships are given at the end of each year to deserving seniors. The outstanding event this year was an evening meet- ing in January attended by both fathers and mothers, when the Home Economics and Industrial Arts rooms were open with demonstrations of work, preceded by a program consisting of a Minstrel Show by Boy Scout Troop 9, a talk by Dr Lyseth, music by the Deering j.V. Band, and refreshments. The Pathhnders' Officers are: Mrs. William Linnell, presi- dentg Mrs. Eric Adde, first vice president, Mrs. Myron Lamb, second vice president, Mrs. Carl Becker, recording secretary, Mrs. A. Clifford Bayer, corresponding secretary, Mrs. Edgar Damon, treasurer. Faculty advisers are Miss Adelaide Briggs and Mrs. Carrie Morrison. Band Mothers' Club The Deering High School Band Mothers' Club has been active the past year raising funds to carry on the interests of the band. The officers of the club are: Mrs. Walton Libby, presidentg Mrs. Carl Pettengill, vice president, Mrs. Charles Quincy, sec- retary, Mrs. Carl Patten, treasurer. The meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month at the high school. The largest project of the year was the compiling and selling of the cook books, Cooking to Beat the Band. This has been so successful that it is to be carried on during the summer and into next year. Other projects were a dance at the school' in the fall, the Fathers, Day concert in january and the annual concert and dance in City Hall in March and several paper drives. As a result of these projects we sent the band to the Western Maine Music Festival at Brunswick, Maine and to the New England Festival at Hampton Beach, N. H. We bought some new instruments and added to the uniform fund. In February the Band was invited to play a joint concert with the Medford High School Band at Medford, Mass. This was a trip long to be remembered. It has been a pleasure to work for a Band of which we are all so proud. Orchestra Mothers' Club The Deering High School Orchestra Club was formed by a few interested mothers of orchestra members, approximately ten years ago, for the purpose of supporting the orchestra by sending it to the festivals and by furnishing its members with uniforms. Mrs. Raymond McCubrey was the first president of the club, which had a membership of about forty mothers. The 1947-1948 officers are: Mrs. Lawrence H. Kimball, pres- identg Mrs. S. E. Crosby, vice presidentg Mrs. Raymond Borstel, secretaryg Mrs. Lawrence Plowman, treasurer. The club's projects this year have included a talent show, a vesper concert, and the annual orchestra concert, which were all held in the high school auditorium. La. J Nineteen DLJIVUNEK IVIUUL 1 UN President SEIXIICDF? BOB FODEN Vire Previdenl INGA HAUGAARD DON BAADE Secretary Treasurer forty-eight Fxerutive Committee Executive Committee MR. DUNFEE Clan' Advicer Executive Committee KERRY JACKSON A BILL COUSINS Senior Class History Regretfully, we realize the time has come for the class of 1948 to leave its school record at Deering. For four years we have studied and had fun together, but in a short time we will be scattered in an unsettled post-war world. All of us will look back on our freshman year as one of bewilderment and surprises. It has been said that we almost put the school on fire. This, of course, refers to our own E. Brant Frost in the Freshman Reception. Our officers for that year were Artie McAlis- ter, president, Sylvia Fletcher, secretary, Nancy Cottrell, treasurer, and Val Lagueux, Nancy Knowles and John Hay, members of the executive committee. Mr. Stack was our class adviser. In our sophomore year, we went back to school with America at peace again. In this year we were led by Sumner Moulton. Assisting him were Dottie McCann, Nancy Mosher, jack Hay, Bob Simpson, Pat Tibbetts, and Bill Burnham. Our class adviser was Mr. Bailey. We can remember in our junior year the enthusiasm of choosing our class rings and of holding our Junior Prom under the able supervision of Mr. McCann. Kerry Jackson was president, Inga Haugaard, vice president, Virginia Norton, secretary, Stan Ladd, treasurer, Artie McAlister, Charlie Hildreth, and Sylvia Fletcher on the executive committee. ' Our senior year has been one of excitement and pleasure, as well as one of work for our class adviser, Mr. Dunfee. The class elected the following students as their ofhcersz Sumner Moulton, Bob Foden, Inga I-Iaugaard, Don Baade, Dottie McCann, Bill Cousins, and Kerry Jackson. Our most important problems seem to be where we are to go and what we are to do next. During these four years, some of the shining stars on our ball teams have been Stan Ladd, Bob Simpson, Don Baade, Tiny MacMillan, Dick Campbell, George Cadigan, and Kerry Jackson. The girls' teams have been fortunate in having such athletes as Pat Scott, Jackie Holmes and Joan Bennett. The ones yelling themselves hoarse at the games-namely, the cheerleaders-have been Artie McAlister, Brant Frost, Sylvia Fletcher, Nancy Cottrell, and Ellie Rumery. The outstanding workers for Ram-Blings and Amethyst have included Eleanor Rum- ery, John Barker, Artie McAlister, Dave Huff, Maryse Salmonsen, and Bill Cousins. Our musical organizations have attracted many excellent musicians, such as, Val La- gueux, Ruth Crosby, Anne Plowman, Ginny Norton, Ginny Danforth, Bev Winckler, Dave Huff, Jackie Kimball, and Ray Stevens. As the time to leave the halls of Deering approaches, I am sure we can all think of each individual as having contributed something to the school or to a fellow classmate. Also we thank the faculty members for all their help in studies, personal problems, and social activities. INGA I-IAUGAARD, Secretary ramatic Club The Deering High School Dramatic 'Club gave for its feature presentation this year Norman Krasna,s two-act comedy, ,'QDear Ruth. The play, which was given on Thanks- giving night, was even more hilarious than the movie of the same name thanks to the expert direction of Mrs. John Gulliver. Patricia Tibbetts was excellently cast as Ruth Wilkins, Brant Frost played the hand- some Lt. William Seawrightg Erik Lundin took the part of the very proper Albert Krummerg Dorothy McCann had the character part of Dora, the colored maid, Bruce McGorrill and Inga Haugaard were cast as Judge and Mrs. Harry Wilkins, respectively, Barbara Gee played the Winsome Martha Seawright, Joy Williams took the part of Miriam Wilkins, Gene Barton was cast as Sargent Chuck Vincent, and Mervyn Taylor played Harold Klobbermeyer. But there is more to any play than meets the eye. The behind-the-scenes crew of loyal Dramatic Club members consisted of the following hard workers: Stage manager, Arthur McFee and his assistants Gene Barton, Erik Lundin and Mervyn Taylor, Bud Davis, the electriciang Virginia Danforth, Commissioner of Properties, and her helper, Beverly Ann Grant, Marion Osher and Katherine Likely in charge of costumes. A superb cast, expert direction, and an efficient stage crew made the Dramatic Club play, Dear Ruth,', one of the best comedies ever seen on the Deering Stage. Gordon F. To prove this let's take a look at some of the sports.. First let,s take football and such players as Graham Hay, Robert Sawtelle, Robert Linnell, and Bill Stubbs who forwarded our team to many a victory. In girls' Held hockey there were such girls as Pat Huddleson, Pat Burke, Nancy Richardson, Ruth Beecher, and Shirley Johnson. Next letis take a look at basketball with next year,s co-captains Warren Johnson and Lenny Curtis. Others are Glenn Folsom, Jack Whittemore, Jerry Kitchens, Teddy Tolman, Ed Mardigan, and Teddy Parker. The Jun- ior girls made a fine showing in basketball with Ruth Beecher, Pat I-Iuddleson, Barb Strout, Shirley Johnson, Pat Burke, Norma Buckley, and Doris Dunn. Finally let's take a gander at baseball with Varsity players Ed Mardigan Pete Sickles, John McGuire, Warren Johnson, Lenny Curtis, Johnny DiMat- teo, Dick Ellis, and Jack Tanguay. 7 Another large organization who couldn't do without the Juniors is the DHS Band with such members as Bev Pettingill, Cal Borstel, Ruth Gagnon, Peter Perkins, Bruce McGorrill, Bob Nero, Carl Plumer, Billy Howe, and many others. The Ram-Blings have also many competent Juniors, such as Maryjane Curran, Cal Borstel, Bev Pettingill, Jackie Blanchard, Barb Connor, Bill French, and Billy Stubbs just to mention a few. In the year 1945-46 We came into big Deering High School as Freshmen. The class oiiicers Were: Arthur Goon, president, Maryjane Curran, vice pres- ident, Carol Eaton, secretary, Lenny Curtis, treasurer, and executives: Rob- ert Vaughan, John DilVIatteo and Bob Sawtelle. In our Sophomore year we had caught on to what high school life was all about. Our Sophomore class officers were: Brian Flynn, president, DeAnn Mears, vice president, Connie Webb, secretary, Bob Vaughan, treasurer, Executive Committee: Mervyn Taylor, Bev Cushman and Pete Sickles. This year our class was led by Warren Johnson, president. Other offi- cers were Maryjane Curran, vice president, DeAnn Mears, secretary, Lenny Curtis, treasurer, Executive: Art Sprague, Bobby Vaughan and Ralph Salamone. The big item of our Junior year was the Junior Prom which was the part- ing farewell tothe Senior Class and the signal for us to carry on the good work that they have done. We wish to thank Mr. McCann our class adviser especially for helping us with our problems throughout our Junior year. An- other outstanding athlete who was the recipient of the Vinall Trophy for outstanding utracksmanshipv at the Four Cornered Track Meet was Don Becker. Dwight Harvey was also active. Following the fall sports, basketball became the craze and Buddy Cook proved his worth to the hardwood sport as a Varsity performer while Hodgkins, Valente,iJeff Thomas, Phil Nectow, Bob Bean, Bob Whittemore, and Chuck Cameron performed nobly for the Jayvees. Harriman, Hodg- kins, Swan, Ireland, Bradstreet, Cook, Don Rideout, and Phil Marshall whipped the uhorsehidei' around for Mr. Karakashian's baseball group. The natators' sport was highlighted by the performances of Captain-elect Phil Marshall and Leon Stover. The boys were not the only ones active in sports, for the Varsity and Jayvees' field hockey teams were represented by such Sophomore stars as Connie Baade, Jean Swett, Ruth Johnson, Arlene Kidder, Dot Lamming, Kay Zeiner, Mary Drake, and Marilyn Huskins. Lamming, Kidder, Baade, Johnson, Swett, Huskins, Pat Knapp, Marlowe Farnham, and Norma Smaha showed their ability on the Varsity and Jayvee Basketball squads. The Girls' Swimming Team consisted .of the Sophomores, Dorothy Bernstein, Kidder, and Smaha. Softball is also popular among the girls. Those participating were Lam- ming, Swett, Baade, Knapp, Kidder, Johnson, Zilla, Maddox, Jo Greene, and Huskins. Last year's officers consisted of Don Rideout, president, Jean Driscoll, vice president, Jean Swett, secretary, Bob Bean, treasurer, Kathie Zeiner, Dwight Harvey, and Elly Briggs, executive committee. COTTRELL, Head Cod lv ARA KARAKASHIAN, ALFRED MALLET VARSITY fOOTI3All The Season During the past season the DHS football aggregation,s success has been at ebb tide. Although our stalwarts, coached by B. Cottrell and ably managed by Phil McCarthy, tasted the sweet nectar of a full victory but twice, they have shown tremendous promise, and it must be remembered that all but a few of them were playing their first season of varsity ball. B. Cottrell's team was bolstered by such vets as Ladd, Simpson, Foden, Baade, McMillan, and Hay. This year, instead of having co-captains for the season, the players decided on indi- vidual field captains. This post was held for over half the season by George Cadigan center, who was considered the most useful all round player on the team. Other out- standing linemen were Graham Hay, who made the second string all-state team, Foden, Baade, Cousins, Bradstreet, and McMillan. Backfielders were Ladd, Simpson, Harriman, 7 Valente, Miller, Hodgkins, Tanguay, and Ireland. Warren Swan succeeded in kicking four out of six field goals. Deering was unable to stop the opposing attack in the first three games, although in each case she made a bid for a score, in the Cheverus game Simpson marching 60 odd yards for a touchdown. Her attack was handicapped by the absence of Ladd and the general inexperience of the team. In the South Portland game, Deering showed offensive improvement, namely by the addition of Ladd. In receiving a screen pass Simpson scored his second touchdown of the year by a long run of 48 yards. For the next game we trekked to Auburn for our first victory of the season. Sibbie sprung 60 odd yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The play of the game was a double pass from Ladd to Harriman to Baade, who ran for pay dirt. Tanguay bucked in the fourth quarter for the third touchdown. Ladd opened the Thornton game by running back 85 yards from the opening kick-off for a touchdown. From there on Deering held the upper hand, Thornton suffering from the loss of Pendleton. For the first and only time of the season that Deering marched', a considerable distance for a score, Ladd bucked over on a fourth down. In the annual Turkey Day game, Deering surprised the throng of over 10,000 people in a no-score game. Deering allowed Portland into their territory only once, whereas Deering drove deep into Portland's twice. Deering proved fairly successful in stopping Smith's passes, which represented a great margin of improvement from the previous score of 34 to 2. Penalties and a muddy field handicapped both teams. Cadigan and Ladd were co-captains. Congratulations to the Frosh team and to Coach Kosiba for the best record of the Deering teams this year. Although the record of the second team was not successful, the games lost were close. The overall picture for the future looks good with an 'enlarged coaching staff and many veteran players. The players on the varsity squad are: Shirley Johnson, Jean Swett, Ruth Beecher, Pat Huddleson, Pat Burke, Ruth Johnson, Jackie Holmes, Diane Sargent, Joan Burnell, Joan Bagster, Joan Lamming, and Nancy Knowles. Jackie Holmes was elected captain of the varsity squad. Ruth Beecher was the highest scorer, making nine points for her team. There were only four varsity games played this year and we won two of the four. The J.V.'s played only one game this season. It was played at Cony the same day that the varsity game was played. Cony won the game Z to 1. The players on the J.V. squad are: Elaine Sawyer, Donna Libby, Connie Baade, Arlene Kidder, Carolyn Finkan, Mary Drake, Lois Hunter, Betty Johnson, Mary Tetrault, Mary Lou Pettingill, and Sylvia Hanson. Arlene Kidder was elected captain of the J.V. team. Marilyn I-Iuskins and Kay Zeiner are substitutes. The prospects for next year's team are very good. Only four of the varsity members are graduating this year. J.V. members will probably fill in their places and some of the beginners this year will be on the J.V. squad. . Swishl Swish! was the thrilling sound that echoed to the ears of all loyal Deeringites during the winter months of '47-'48, Losing only a few valuable players of last yearls varsity squad, namely, springy Frankie Goodie, Dana Weeks, Bob Lee, and Wiff 1-lodgkins, Coach Fred Kosiba had a promis- ing varsity squad. Veterans Simpson, Jackson, Campbell, Johnson, Baade, and Curtis returned to the 1948 team, aided by newcomers Whitmore, Higgins, Cook, Mardigan, Kitchens, and Folsom. Bob Perruzzi ably managed the team. In the first game of the season, Deering chalked up a win over a scrapping Sanford High team for a 31 to 27 triumph. Left forward Dick Campbell was high scorer with 11 points. Next week found Deering again out front in a roughly played game over Thornton. Lanky Dick Campbell again led Deering's attack, totaling 19 points. Other outstanding players were Simpson, for timely tallying and fioor work, Curtis, for long range scoring and rear court effectiveness, and Johnson, for rebound gobbeling. For its first loss of the season Deering bowed to the Fighting Irish in a heartbreaking 38 to 24 loss. The next week Deering tipped its head again to a superior Cony team, 49 to 39. Then, tired of being beaten, Deering topped Lewiston in a 41 to 28 victory. The Purple broke forth with a speedy, break-forcing brand of play which shook off the Spindle City crew in the second half. Again Deering showed her teeth by beating Edward Little, 39 to 31. Outstanding in the game were Campbell, Simpson, and Whitmore. From across the bridge came the superior Red Riot team, sticking strictly to man to man tactics throughout the game, racking up a 35 to 30 victory. Mid-week Deering trekked to Bowdoin and to victory again by chalking up another win over the Bowdoin Freshmen. The fouls did it! Portland's Blue Bulldogs edged over Deering in a 28 to 27 nightcap, Len Curtis playing aggressive ball. The next two games brought Deering to the top again, beating St. Louis 37 to 34 and Fort Fairfield 43 to 40. Simpson played outstanding ball, as did Curtis and Higgins. Deering was beaten by Cheverus for the second time of the season. Kerry Jackson dropped in 11 points, most of them coming up in the second half on lay-up shots, and Curtis racked up 9, largely from the foul line and beyond. Deering chalked up another win over Edward Little. Jackson and Curtis were the outstanding players of the game. South Portland and Governor Dummer were on the Deering hoopsters' necks in the next two games. South Portland won 33 to 29, and Governor Dummer 67 to 53. The conditions were reversed, however, in the two following games. Deering won 'over Lewis- ton, 43 to 34, and beat Portland in a close game, 38 to 36, for the final game of the regular season. In the Western Maine Tourney, Deering edged Edward Little in a sparkling 39 to 32 triumph. The semi-final game, however, was not so favorable to us, as Biddeford won over us 56 to 44. Coach Smith's quintet, the Junior Varsity, should be congratulated for a very good season of eleven wins and four defeats. A few outstanding basketeers have been Ted Tolman, Bounce I-lodgkins, Speed Valente, and Chuck Cameron. The freshman squad, coached by John Ham, had the most successful season of any team in greater Portland. The Frosh succeeded in obtaining an undefeated record, with nineteen wins and no losses. Flashy players for the quintet were Frank Gardiner, Jerry Simpson, Dick Robbins, Ralph Hendrix, and John Coolidge. The aspects for the future look good, and we wish Coach Kosiba and next year's team the best of luck! J V Basketball Freshman Basketball K+ Outdoor Squad Indoor Squad TIQACIK Girls' Basketball Girls' basketball, guided by Coach Elnora Curtis and Co-captains Jackie Holmes and Barb Strout, have completed a very successful season. The varsity team had an undefeated season this year. The teams the varsity played are: Alumnae, Cathedral, South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Westbrook, Sanford, Cony, and Kennebunlc. They played all these teams twice with the exception of the Alumnae and the last two. Pat Burke, Jean Swett, Nancy Cottrell, Jaclcie Holmes, Arlene Kidder, and Barb Strout are the leading players on the varsity team. The rest of the varsity team includes: Connie Baade, Ruth Johnson, Ruth Beecher, and Sylvia Fletcher. The Junior varsity team also had a good season, playing ten games and losing only one to South Portland. The girls on the Junior varsity are: Smaha, Huslcins, Lamming, Huddleson, Kneeland, Johnson, Thorne, Knapp, and the manager of both the varsity and Junior varsity, Elaine Sawyer. The Freshman team also made a fine record this year, losing only two games out of eight. The captain of the Freshman team is Judy Strout. Other players include Butler, Andrew, Halberts, Gamble, Finberg, Wagner, MacDonald, Katz, Worth, Irish, Shible, and Burlce. With the fine scores made by this year's teams, our varsity team should come out on top next year, even though they will lose some of their players in June. Along with them came such newcomers as Marshall, Tanguay, Swan, Harriman, Johnson, Valente, Ellis, and Tolman. The squad was whipped into shape by Ara Karakashian, but proved itself to be a little rough in spots. At mid-season the Purple's percentage wasn't too good after having won only two of the seven games played. Hard-hitting Ed Mardigan made his debut in a four-hit shutout game against Biddeford, that not only placed Big Ed in the upper bracket of pitching, but also gave Deering a chance to start climbing. A number of other well pitched per- formances were spoiled by a few errors at the wrong time, but with a little more backing the team is climbing. According to Ara, the prospects for next year look good with only two varsity players, Stan Ladd and Bob Simpson, leaving the halls of Deering in June. It may exist in any one of the thousands of high schools throughout the country, but its existence proves only one thing, the students of that school have realized that the soundest way to obtain the type of school life they desire is through self government. The class of 1944 organized the first Student Council at Deering. In its preliminary stages it was viewed with skepticism, but due to the untiring efforts of the loyal council members and the Faculty Adviser, the Student Council has more than proven itself worthy of the highest praise. This year the Installation Assembly was held February 18th, with Dr. Lyseth and Mr. Wiggin guest speakers. The oflicers for the year 1948 were sworn in, Sumner Moultoii, president, Irving Della Torre, vice president, Sylvia Fletcher, secretary, Inga 1-Iaugaard, treasurer, Dorothy McCann and Ralph Salamone, clerks, and Glenn Folsom, sergeant-at- arms. Ac the Installation Assembly, a regular meeting of the Student Council was held in order to acquaint the student body with the functions of the council. The activities of the council have been varied. On January 24th, the day following mid-year exams, the Student Council Dance was held to increase the linancial standing of the council. For the convenience of Deering High School students busses were char- tered for all games played away from Portland. Barbara Mitchell has worked hard on the students request of a unified class ring. John Barker headed the committee which worked on the project of installing a pay-phone in Deering. Millicent Groden carried on the scrapbook, which now contains all the school events for the years 1946, 1947, and 1948. The council was also active in planning the State Convention of Student Councils, which was held on May 28th at the Waynhete school. Bruce McGorrill headed the com- mittee which worked on the exchanging of our best assemblies with those of other schools. The Student Council is now a respected organization at Deering, for it gives each stu- dent the right to present his ideas for the betterment of school life. CCDUNCII. L .,, i, AMETHYST 5 JOHN L. We predict that, whatever Sumner Moulton does, he will be as successful and well liked as he has been at Deering. Anne Salamone and Audrey Grant will make two of the cutest secretaries our school has ever produced. Pat Scott will compete in the Olympics. The W.A.W.'s will have lots of fun telling their grandchildren about the good old days at Deering High. David Huff will always be happy as long as he has himself to love. But what will be- come of Q'The Better Halfn? Or is it the Other Halfv? Jack Cooper will be a handsome cadet at West Point, but even a hanclsomer Lieutenant. Khaki becomes him. Inga Haugaard will be successful in college because of her poise and beauty as well as her brains. Norma Emerson, Maxine Hudson and Priscilla Webster will make wonderful nurses. A few of us will be sick all the time. Lee Waterman and Ralph Little will become two of the greatest scientists in the country. In two years Deering will have real grass on her lawns. Or maybe the students ,will prefer dog-toothed violets. Stan Ladd's voice will bring him wealth either in the Metropolitan Opera or as a doorman. 1 5 Dolores Gross and Joan Bennett will bring honor to Deering High in the fields of science and mathematics. In a few years there will be enough courageous students to start a fourth year Latin class-it isn't hard, really. John Barker will become the hard boiled movie type of newspaper editor. Nancy Mosher and Helen Mackie will set up housekeeping together until a better pros- pect comes along. Tiny MacMillan will buy a fountain pen of his own. In 1950 Deering will win the Thanksgiving Day Game. Bob Sawyer will lead a pleasant life making sarcastic remarks with Miss Huston. Arthur McAlister will grow bald in his sixty-third year. Our lady, Dorty McCann, will go far with her voice and her personality. Betty Tuck will always be remembered for her friendliness as well as her beauty. In thirteen years Dear Ruth will be revived on Broadway with Eric Lundin playing the unfortunate Albert. To make our prophecy complete we, the Class of 1948, add this last remark: Dick Campbell and Donald Baade will live happily ever after. Class Will We, the Class of 1948, declaring ourselves to be of sane and sound mind and in full possession of our faculties, do, hereby, give the following as our last will and testament. Bobby Morrison gives his rendition of Mammy back to A1 Jolson. Bob Melcher leaves his ease on the dance floor to Bobbie Vaughn. Nan Cottrell leaves i'J.B. the remains of his car. Jackie Holmes and Pat Scott leave their love for sports to Ruth Beecher and Pat Burke. Jimmy Doyle leaves his one man show to Johnny DiMatteo. Dotty McCann leaves her French accent for the benefit for, of Miss Dolley's first year French classes. Kerry leaves Marilyn! George Cadigan and Betty Tuck leave their respective titles of Mayor and Miss Deering to next year's fastest runners. Harley Higgins leaves his shy, modest manner to Ed Mardigan. Stan Ladd leaves his low dulcet tones to Norma Buckley. W.A.W. leaves the Gammon's Corner boys free on Wednesday nights. Inga Haugaard leaves her sweet and earnest personality to Connie Webb. Dick Campbell and Don Baade heartbrokenly leave their beautiful ro- mance to 'QBones,' Plumer and Bob Nero. Helen Mackie gives her notes on etiquette for girls to Emily Post's next edition. Bobby Foclen leaves his vitamin pills to Graham Hay. The entire Class of 1948 leaves the halls of Deering High School.
