f i ' u if X ,wi f f if? 6 Senior Class History The class of 1943 entered Deering with much confusion and bewilder- mentg however, after timidly watching the upperclassmen, we soon learned the routine of thc school, as had numerous classes before us. XVe were the first class to be deprived of a Freshman Reception for a reason unknown to all. Douglas Jackson was elected president of our sf- i fl fp NV P Vail 6. if 3 :Huw .JJ nv' 5 , 7 , V 0' ' ei . . :IV Of' i Q M2 O X 4:34 .V - ' 0 1 lfq class. Other oflicers were Virginia Haggett, Pauline Perry and Bill Hastings, The class began to shine in studies as well as in athletics. Jackie Feehan, Larry Bradley, and Bob Blake earned varsity letters. In our sophomore year Mayer Winslow piloted the class, assisted by NO. BY, O,Brion, Doug Feyler and Virginia Grant. This year Deering started something new-two hour exams. In spite of this, rhe honor roll was crowded by the Sophomore Class. We are especially proud of the large number of athletes among whom you will recognize Mayer Winsloxv, Doug Feyler, Bob Adair, Ed Flaherty, Jackie Feehan, Doug -Iaskson, and Ruthie Thurlow, Betty King, Martha McAfee, Helen Stover, Jean Harvey, and Arie Whittemore. Jimmy Lynch was helmsman of our junior year with Donald Payne, Beverly Beale, and Helen Stover assisting. These officers served as a committee at the junior Prom. The varsity baseball team, made up of mostly juniors, was awarded the championship. Three of these players were awarded All-Telegramv honors, two of whom were juniors- Jackie Feehan and Bob Adair. Betty King and Ruth Thurlow were elected to serve as co-captains for the girls' basketball team. We have many skilled musicians, as proved by the number of our classmates in the band and orchestra. During our senior year Carleton Wiggin succeeded Mr. Wing as prin- cipal of Deering. Bob Walsh took over the governmental reins of the Class, assisted by Ruth Thurlow, Edward Goon, and Helen Stover. We proved our ability in dramatics by the production of Every Family Has Onef' which was a success financially as well as dramatically. A fine record of attendance is shown by Thelma Scott who has never been tardy, dismissed, or absent since she started school twelve years ago. The class of 1943 has been very fortunate in having Frank Stack as their class advisor to aid them throughout the four years of Deering. Our class has been infiuenced much by the loss of some of the stu- dents and teachers into the armed forces of our Country. The war has influenced the Senior Class in another way. For the first time in the history of Deering the graduating class will wear caps and gowns in- stead of the usual dresses and suits.
