CLASS OF '53 AS FRESHMEN, TOP, L, TO R.: Darrell Myers, Virg Hanneman, George Novotny, Lloyd Krause, Ronnie Molz, Doug Jones, Jim Fulton, Floyd Griggs. BOTTOM: Juanita Baughman, Mary Anderson, Ardis Boman, Sue Van Winkle, Willa Claire Smith, Stella Rigon, Carolyn Baier. The sponsor is Mr, Harper. 1953 IILHSS HISTURU On September 5, 1949 fifteen energetic freshmen walked into the halls of the old Deerfield High School. Although, we thought we were pretty smart, the seniors soon taught us otherwise. Those who entered as freshmen were Mary Anderson, Carolyn Baier, Juanita Baughman, Ardis Boman, Estella Rigdon, Willa Claire Smith, Lloyd Krause, Virgil Hanneman Ronald Molz, Douglas Jones, Floyd Griggs, George Novotny, Billy Steelman, Dara Myers, and Jim Fulton, On the second Friday of our freshman year the seniors were very kind to us and initiated us. Of course, at that time we dreaded it but now we can look back and laugh, Our class officers for the freshman year were George Novotny, president, Ronald Molz, vice- presidentg and Ardis Boman, secretary-treasurer, Lloyd Krause, reporter, The sponsor of our class was John Harper. We lost Billy Steelman after two weeks of school and gained Susan Van Winkle later in the year. She came from Anderson, Missouri. By 1950 we struggled through our freshman studies and could now call ourselves sophomores. We lost Susan Van Winkle at the beginning of our sophomore year and later Mary Anderson who quit school to marry Haughey Skipton. The class officers for our soph- omore year were Ardis Boman, presidentg Willa Claire Smith, vice-president: Mary Anderson, secretary, 55161121 Rigdon, treasurer. Our sponsor for our sophomore year was Miss Norma Ryman, When we came back to school in 1951 we were promoted to juniors and by that time we thought we were pretty big. At the beginning of our junior year Estella Rigdon quit school to marry Willard McGinn. Willa Claire Smith moved to Cullison, Kansas, and Dara Myers moved to Beeler, Kansas. In October we also had a magazine sale and the junior box supper.' In November, 1951, Jim Fulton quit school because of illness, In April of our junior year we gave our junior play Midnight under the direction of Miss Norma Ryman. Just as soon as we got our play over we started working on the junior-senior banquet which took place in the halls of D. H.S. in May. We enjoyed Olll' junior year under the sponsorship of Miss Pearl Conway. Now the time has come when we can call ourselves seniors. We started our senior year by having the pleasure of initiating the freshman, Our officers for our senior year were Lloyd Krause, presidentg Juanita Baughman, vice-president, Ardis Boman, secretary- treasurer, and Carolyn Baier, reporter, Next on our schedule was, Running Wild , our senior play under the direction of Miss Norma Ryman. We took in more money at our senior play than any class had in the last eight or nine years, The seniors were invited guests at the alumni banquet held during Christmas vacation, In April, 1953, the seniors enjoyed being the guests at the junior-senior banquet given us by the juniors. George Novotny and Ronald Molz were chosen for all-star's in basketball at the state basketball tournament at Hutchinson, Kansas. Lloyd Krause took a piano solo to the district music festival at Dodge City, Kansas, in April and ArdiS Boman took 3 corner solo. The Sunday night before our graduation we had our baccalaureate service, and later in the week we had our class night program. On May the fourteenth nine seniors walked down the aisles of the Deerfield High School Audiroriurn for our last time to receive our diplomas. The sponsors for our senior year were Mr, Gray and Mr. Laudick. Sponsored by DEERFIELD CAFE Z6
