Gym. , 3,4- V A S T O On September ll 19147, six girls and three boys graced the halls of Deerfield High School by becoming members of the freshman class The upperclassmen may have thought we were green but we knew differ ently, at least we thought we did The members of our class included Richard Coleman, Betty Corbett, Faith Fulton, Jimmie LaFon, Melda Moreland, Luella Ploeger, Jack Randolph, Joan Stengel, and Stanley Tackett As usual we were given our choice of four subjects On Friday of the first week the seniors put us through some kind of an ordeal which they called initiation That evening they gave us a party We were glad when it was over but we all had a good time, anyway Our officers were president, Joan Stengel vice president, Faith Fulton, secretary treasurer, Jimmie LaFon With our sponsor, Miss Ryman, we had our usual class parties We never will forget the one when we went to Lake lcKinney on a Weiner roast le all had loads of fun, but I'l1 bet Miss Ryman was glad when we all got back to Deer field We finally struggled through our freshman subjects so that we could call ourselves sophomores This year we had the same members in our class as we did in our freshman class Our officers were treasurer, Luella Ploeger Our sponsor was again Miss Ryman This year our activities consisted of helping the juniors sell magazines, serving at one basketball game, and by serving at the junior senio banquet We ended our sophomore year by going to the Scott County Park on an all school picnic At last come our junior year Our bank account looked pretty low so we decided we had better quit loafing and start making some money if we wanted to go on a senior trip This year we lost Hichard Coleman and Betty Corbett but gained Angel Hernandez and Maxine Corbett In October Jim ie LaFon became Mrs Melvin Yerz and in December Faith Fulton changed her name to Mrs Bobby Landon, and quit school to keep house We chose as our class officers, president, Joan Stengel vice president, Stanley Tacket, secretary, Jimmie Merz treaslrer, Jack Randolph Our sponsor was Miss Pearl Conway Our first activity of the year Entertainment for the evening was a reading by Jaon Stengel, an accordian musical reading by Jimmie Merz Paul tioneer was to sponsor a box supper piano solo by Faith Fulton, a solo by Luella Ploeger, and a Hagler did a fine job as auc Later in the year we sold pop, hot dogs, candy, and gum at several basketball games This added quite a bit to our bank account I' C L S H I S R Y D I .. president, Faith Fulton, vice- president, Jim ie LaFong secretary- In February we had the honor of helping move to the new school building We were quite proud because lt meant that we were to be the first ones to have a play and a junior senior banquet in the new Now came the most important year of school In order to earn more money we gave a three act play, 'Brother Goose , by William Davidson It was a success because of the capable direction of Niss Norma E Ryman The time finally came for the junior senior banquet After many discussions we finally decided on the theme, 'May Day Festival ' W decorated the hall with long streamers extending from the large lay pole in the center of the floor We also decorated the ticket booth to look like a throne for the May Queen and her Myrtle Tackett, Judy Hagler, Ervin Ploeger, and toastmistress for the evening was Joan Stengel by Stanley Tackett, Keith Jones, and Mr by Jimmie Merz, a vocal solo by Vaxine Joan Stengel The junior class sang two attendants who were Scott Downing The Speeches were given A reading was given and a piano solo by Smith Corbett, numbers all our senior year This year the membership of our class decreased Maxine Corbett left us to take up housekeeping with Gilbert Merz, and after the first six what was the matter with our class but evidently they must have had the 'Love Bug Itch,' or something We now have five girls and one boy This year our officers were president, Jack Randolph, vice president, Melda Moreland, secretary, Luella Ploeger, and treasurer, Jim le Merz Our sponsors were Mr Smith and Mrs, B111 Schafer W were very proud to have our only senior boy, Jack Randolph, be chosen as Mr DHS' at the junior box supper We presented our senior play, 'Three Blind Dates , by Betty Knapp, on November 10, 1950 This play was again directed by Miss Ryman We spent most of the year working on the annual and selling ads Melda Moreland was our annual editor and Jimmie Merz was the assistant editor We chose as our class colors, lavender and yellow, and our flower is the daffodil Our motto is 'The best day for doing the best is the one that comes seven times a week ' We are all planning to have a good time on our senior trip to New Orleans We wish to express our appreciation to the school board and the people of the community who have made this trip possible We are all happy to have completed our four years of high school, but we will never forget the good old days in DHS We are also very eager to look ahead and see what the future might bring N - i . e weeks, Stanley Tackett left us to marry Lora Dee Bell.
