Town 25 - FADS - Trends A1 ol-is New fads and fashions hit DHS like a storm this year with the increasing popularity of punk. Punk hairstyles were seen all around Deerfield, and it was no longer rare to see guys with a pierced ear or two. Another phenomenon to hit DHS was the absolutely adorable Cabbage Patch Doll. Almost every student dreamed of owning his or her very own Cabage Patch Kid with a shrivelled plastic face. Along with these dolls, the new cordless space phones were high up on holiday lists. The party game of the year could only be Trivial Pursuits. DHS students were naturally great players thanks to their great knowledge and comprehension of trivial matters. The last fad to hit DHS was video rock. Seeing favorite songs creatively put on the T.V. screen was an exciting way to experience music. The music of Michael Jackson, the Police, Culture Club, and David Bowie were all big hits this year. Even though hopeless preps and Air Supply fans could still be found roaming the halls, DHS was right in step with the latest fashions. 26 Pads And Fashions l l TOP: Jim Kanter displays spike jewelry. This custom was initiated by Randall Schultz and John Vacek in 4977. The two men were downtown visiting Mayor Daley's ethnic folk festival when an inspiration hit them. They decided that it would be good to have an ethnic celebration at DHS to fill the mid-winter void. Ethnocenter, as it is called, has since become a popular tradition, with about one hundred students participating this year. This year, real weird exhibits were kept to a minimum in order to help keep Ethnocenter justifiable from an educational standpoint. This did not, however, prevent students from experiencing a huge range of cultures - from Lithuania to Ecuador to Indonesia, and of course most of Europe. Randall Schultz commented, Ethnocenter allows students to be introduced to all kinds of backgrounds. lt is an all-around good time in a cultural setting. Colleen Piersen, representing Russia at Ethnocenter, laughingly added, There's so much that we share, so it's time we're aware, it's a small world after all. TOP: Abbodanza Papa Gulotta. Joel Johnson, a new direcTor, made The play a memorable exper- ience wiTh The help of sixfeen fine casT members and an able crew. Under Milkwood is a play wriTTen by The Welsh poeT, Dylan Thomas. IT is The sTory of one day in a small Town in Wales. IT involves The lives of very sim- ple, ordinary people. The play's complexiTy resulTed from The greaT number of characTers por- Trayed. Besides The Three narraTive voices, There were over forTy charac- Ters, making iT necessary for each ac- Tor To play Three or four differenT roles. A problem wiTh The play was ThaT much of The audience was confused by Thomas' poeTic sTyle and had Trou- ble following along. IT was a difficulT play for everyone, admiTTed Linda BaseviTz, senior and casT member. 'iBuT, she added, The producfion of Under Milkwood was a rewarding ex- perience for everyone involved. An- oTher casT member, junior Eric Morris, said, I believe The play was successful because iT provided new insighT inTo The meaning of life. Q. year. lf these can be pushed into the backs of our memo- ries, we will realize what an important time junior year was. Most of us were able to cruise around town on wheels. We won the class float contest, again. And we came so close to winning the Spirit Jug that we've got it aced for next year. We mustn't forget those intellectual- ly stimulating classes we took. We ex- perienced everything from U.S. History to the monstrous junior term paper. For most of us, these fears turned out to be nothing. We even found ourselves laughing at how ridiculous they were. We left our freshman year with many great memories and high hopes for the upcoming years In the fall of 83 we came back to DHS with much more confidence in ourselves Our sophomore year is almost over now and we ve built up many more memories The first two years at DHS have been great ones and with a class as spirited and smart as ours there is no way that the next two years could be anything but fantastic' OPH OM ORE5 OPH OM ORESOPHOM OR Betsy Morton Lisa Moss Gretchen Motzko Michelle Mulvihill Laura Myers John Nardinr Matt Narrol Erik Nelson Amy Newman Keith Newman Lisa Newman Aram Nikitas Aimee Nordmark Timothy O'Donnell Tim Olanaer Jennifer Olendart Michael Olson Stanley Olson Michael O'Neill Davide Pacchini Brett Packee Neal Palles Richard Palmer Lola Paschwa Allan Pearce Mark Perin Robert Perrin Toby Perry Jennifer Peterson Andrew Pfeler Gregg Piazzi Gail Piersen Susie Pinsky Matthew Plotsky Juliann Pokorny Kate Poland Hillary Polrkolt Mike Polisner Lisa Polavin Stephany Pond Robert Posterli Patricia Power Elizabeth Prendergasl Tami Puckett Todd Raaunsky Tomasa Ramirez Kent Rappaport Peter Redondo Jerry Reid Kathleen Reidy Sophomores 161 OPH OM ORESOPHOM ORESOPH OM OR Scott Reinish Barbara Reisman Margaret Riggio Adam Roberts Maureen Roemer Matthew Rogers Shelly Roman Greg Rosen David Rosenberg Stephen Rosenfeld Debra Rosensweet Peter Rossi Michael Rotrncn Michelle Rubin Ruby Russell Janessa Russo Jennifer Ryan Patrick Sack Stephen Salm Peter Sandgren Michael Sandaw Peter Sarnataro Susan Sartini Michael Schiller Tyler Schimanski Michelle Schlack Mark Scholl Julie Schotanus Michael Schatters Andrea Schultz Joseph Schwarz John Sciarretta Maxine Segal Jon Senior Jamie Shanin Layna Shein Bryan Shuman Jeffrey Siegel Gregory Siegel Daniel Silver David Silvian Stacey Simon Julie Simonson Angela Sizemore Linda Slavin Jane-Ann Smith Kimberly Soderberg Jamie Salem Kim Spears Maria Spilotro Heather Stark Todd Starr Michael Stern Matthew Stevens Carolyn Stewart 162 Sophomores BELOW: Amy Gobervllle pretends to do homework in the courtyard ,fri ' we A , V M1 'L.L'w, LL ,J -my J, 1'fr f2.. 1,5 . Administration - Roger Ault, William Schuett, James WarrenqSuperintendentj, Donald Ring, Robert Toresberg. The year 4984 is most often associated with drastic change and upheavel. At DHS, this change manifested itself in the retirement of Principal Theodor Repsholdt. As an administrator, teacher and coach, Theodor Repsholdt served the students of District M3 for thirty years. Beginning at HPHS as a core curriculum assistant and football coach, Repsholdt soon became a department chairman. After a series of positions at DHS, Repsholdt eventually was named Principal in 4978. Despite this promotion, Repsholdt remained in direct contact with the student body. He taught courses varying from English to U.S. History. One history student commented, Mr. Repsholdt was one of the most inspiring teachers l've ever had. He also founded and coached the successful girls' golf team. The U.S. Constitution speaks of a more perfect union. Under the leadership of Principal Theodor Repsholdt, DHS has become cr more perfect high school.
