Many single incidents during these four years would more than fill it. If, in the years to come, these pages renew acquaintances and refresh memories of these years here at Deerfield High, it will have fulfilled its purpose. Our rnern'ries of you will linger And grow ln our hearts more each year. Four happy years we have spent here, Under your gold and your blueg For guidance to new paths before us, Our thanks go, dear Deerfield, to you. Now that the tlme's come for parting From teachers and classmates so true, Our Alma Mater, dear Deerfield, We bid you our fondest adieu. Chorus: Faithful O faithful O Deerfield, Faithful O faithful O Deerfield, Faithful O faithful O Deerdeld, We're sorry we're leaving you now. Barbara Clark 2 3 Class Poem Dear old Deerfield High, we're leaving: Now our high school days are through, But we'll always try to bring you The praise and tribute that is due. Our four years here have been happyg Work and study was mingled with fun. Cherished dreams are now beginning, As to a crossroad in life we've come. You've been our guiding light, old Deerfield, To help us through the future years. And though we are from you now parting, Adieus will not be marked by tears. You have taught us well the rule that Courage should e'er in our hearts be, And with loyalty and Honor above Al1 We can build with deeds to Victory. Wanda Kuznik Prophecu Un The Prophet As I was watching a I-0 ball game between the Red Sox and the Giants, in the Yankee Stadium, in April, 1970, I saw a familiar facestep into the batter's box. lt was none other than my old class- mate, Merit Dwight. He was now playing second base for the Red Sox and had a . 400 batting average with five home runs, which is an excellent record when one considers that this was only the third game of the season. It was the last of the ninth inning, with the Sox trailing, and one out to go with men on first and third. The pitcher wound up, and zing--a fast ball for strike one. The next ball was swung at and missed for die second strike. Then came that fast ball again, but Merit caught it, and it went over the fence to sew up the ball game 3-I. Another Red Sox victory and another home run for Merit, with a total of six home runs for three g3l'Il68l After the crowd left the park, I went down to the showers to talk to the hero. I leamed that he still is an eligible young bachelor with three Buicks, a chauffeur, and a valet. He has an income of sroo, ooo a year for his ball playing, but he still maintains his farm which, incidentally, comprises over 1, ooo acres. He is very happy in his present position and expects to play ball for some time to come. The years have been profitable for him also, since he has donated large portions of his salary to worthy charities. Then we talked at length of the good old days we spent at Deerfield High. lt was all quite wonder- ful, for I had had the opportunity of visiting one of my old friends who had become famous. Edward Zobriski 24 Class Histor Not only the memories of 1951, but those of our whole high school will always be dear to us, the Seniors. How often we will look back and realize the happiness we have enjoyed here in Deerfield High School and the friends we have gained! These years have been the best, so far, in our young lives. We shall never forget September 3, 1947, that was the day we entered as Fresh- men. We were all a little timid, but with the help of our teachers and upper classmen we soon became a part of D. H. S. In the days that followed, we chose our class officers. They were: President, Anthony Farrick, Vice-president, Regina Klepadlog Secretary, Wanda Piekarski, and Treasurer, Robert Thompson. Our class advisers were Mrs. Clark and Mr. Owers. Many of our boys reported for football, and Donald Pielock and Henry Zukowski were chosen to play on the team that participated in many exciting contests. One of the main events of the year was the Halloween Square Dance. We shall always remember our initiation. There was also the checker tournament in which a few members of our class took part. We were all very proud of Bob l-loynoski who distinguished himself as runner-up for the championship. When the basketball season opened, Robert Hoynoski, Vincent Podlesney, and Henry Zukowski were prominent players on the second team. But the boys were not the only ones to take part in sports. In girls' basketball the second team was comprised mostly of Freshmen. Toward the end of the season the Freshmen girls played the Grammar School, and because of practice the victory was ours. Our star players were Marion Boro, Sally Farrick, Dorothy Goodwin, Betty Jennis, Mary Ann Maynard, Helen O'Donnell, Janet Otto, Marie Plante and Betty Raffa. The Household Arts Course which was required for First-year girls proved to be interesting and valuable. During the year we lost five 'of our classmates. They were Raymond Childs, Audrey Filkins, Cecile St. Hilaire, Joyce Vincent, and Margaret Blanchard. 25 When we returned in September, 1948, as Sophomores, we found new faces not only among the student body but also in the teaching staff. The new faculty members included Mr. Collette, who succeeded Mr. Goodwin as Principal: Miss McKay, who replaced Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Ray, who became a new home room teacher for some of us. Our ranks were now reduced to forty members. Dorothy Goodwin, Joyce McBride, and Helen O'Donnell had moved away. Mary Arms transferred to Northfield seminary, and Ralph Pearson went to work for the Consolidated Cigar Company. Mary Gragen and Jayne Whitney were new members. With the assistance of our class advisers, Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Ray, we chose the following officers to conduct us through our second year at Deerfield High: President, Donald Pielockg Vice-president, Jayne Whimeyg Secretary, Betty Raffag and Treasurer, Paul Legac. Many of the Sophomore boys played on the basketball team which had a very successful season, and we were especially proud of Francis Descavich, Robert Hoynoski, Donald Pielock, Vincent Podlesney, and Henry Zukowski who received D's . Tryouts for cheerleaders resulted in the selection of Betty Raffa from our class. We all agree that Betty deserves much credit for her splendid performances. In girls' basketball, Janet Otto and Marie Plante did an excellent job on the varsity team, while Betty Jennis, Betty Raffa, Marion Boro, Sally Farrick, and Mary Ann Maynard were outstanding players on the second team. During the year, five classmates -- Priscilla Williams, Caroline Marchefka, Charles Patnode, Michael Mullins and Eileen Charsky left school. In June came the cramming for the final exams, and before we realized it, our Sophomore year had ended. In the fall of 1949, now only thirty-five in number, we came back to D. H. S. as Jaunty Juniors , bubbling with enthusiasm and ready to do great things. This year our new faculty member, Mr. Beres, also became a home room teacher for some of us. As leaders we elected the following members: President, Paul Legacg Vice-president, Marie Plante, Secretary, Betty Raffag and Treasurer, Robert Peloskie. We, as Juniors, dominated the field of sports. Henry Zukowski and Vincent Podlesney played on the varsity basketball team. Robert Hoynoski, Robert Thompson and Robert Peloskie were valuable players on the second team. Several of the girls also showed their fighting spirit throughout the basketball season. Janet Otto, Marie Plante, Sally Farrick, and Betty Raffa were given ample opportunity to reveal their talent on the varsity team. Marion Boro was the assistant manager, Mary Ann Maynard and Betty Jennis were proficient players on the second team. Lest we forget, we here give praise to our two junior cheerleaders, Betty Raffa and Marion Boro. May 5 was the date of our first formal dance, the Junior Prom. The enchanting music was played by the Knights of Melody, and Jayne Whitney was chosen as our Prom Queen. Of course, the whole affair was a dazzling success. We entered upon our fourth and final year by welcoming our new principal, Mr. Joseph 26 W. Tinker, who succeeded Mr. Myron G. Collete, and Miss Natalie Kemp who replaced Miss Daley as Girls' Athletic Coach. Marie Plante transferred to Saint Ann's Academy in Marlboro, Massachusetts, while Robert Nartowicz left to attend Srnith's School. Alec Vickowski became a new member of our class for our Senior year. Class officers for this year were Robert Peloskie, President: Marion Boro, Vice-presidentg Jayne Whitney, Secretaryg and Merit Dwight, Treasurer. Marion Boro became Editor-in-chief of the Tattler , while Betty Jennis, Betty Raffa and Robert Peloskie were staff members. Attention as usual was turned to football, and Senior members of the squad were Robert Peloskie, Robert Thompson, Stanley Jennis, Henry Zukowski, Francis Descavich, Alec Vickow- ski, Merit Dwight, Edward Sakowicz, Donald Pielock, and William Wolfram. The annual play was held in November with two seniors, Marion Boro and Robert Peloskie, as members of the cast. Although Deerfield lost some heartbreaking games, the Blue and Gold boys' team had a very successful season. Deerfield High was again honored with an invitation to participate in the Annual Basketball Tournament at Amherst in March. Our class can boast of some real athletic ability as well as a splendid exhibition by our talented cheerleaders. In girls' basket- ball several seniors played on the varsity squad with Marion Boro as manager. Janet Otto was chosen by the team as captain. Betty Jennis, Betty Raffa, and Marion Boro represented our class as cheerleaders. Just before Christmas Miss McKay resigned her position, and we started the New Year by becoming acquainted with Mr. Allan Keniston, who was appointed to the faculty. At an assembly on January 24, Mr. Tinker announced that Marion Boro was selected as the D. A. R. girl from the Class of 1951. This year our cheerleaders were invited to attend the cheering tournament in Spencer, Massachusetts. They were awarded the Championship Trophy for Class x, because of their originality, appearance, and organization. Our pride in the class exceeded all bounds when, at an assembly held in April, we learned that eight Seniors were admitted to the Pro Merit Society. These masterminds were Edward Zobriski, Regina Klepadlo, Dora Kaiser, Merit Dwight, Barbara Clark and Wanda Kuznik. Marion Boro gained the honor of Valedictorian and Mary Gragen the Salutatorian. Now we are awaiting Graduation night. It is difficult to leave Deerfield High, our teachers, our friends, and especially our classmates, but we realize in part what precious memories we have to store away. As we stand on the threshold of a great new world, we are aware, too, that there will be problems to be faced and that we must give our all to solve them. But with courage, confidence, and sincerity in our hearts, we know that if we give to the world the best we have, the best will come back to us. Dora Kaiser 27 Class Pmphecu One beautiful autumn day in 1975, while we were enjoying a spell of Indian Summer weather, I received a telegram from Fred Giebel, one of my old classmates atDeerfield High, who was operating a world wide travel agency in Chicago. He invited me on a pleasure cniise with him, and, since my work was pretty well up-to -date, I decided to accept his invitation. I phoned Edward Zobriski, who was now owner of one of the largest airlines in the country, and asked him when the next plane would leave for Chicago. He told me at 9:12 the next morning, so that evening I spent in getting my luggage ready for what I knew was to be a most enjoyable trip. I found to my amazement, when I boarded the plane that moming, that the gracious stewardess was none other than an old school mate, Jayne Whitney. It seemed good to see her again. She chatted with me for a while, and informed me that Mary Gragen and Sylvia Baldwin, who were famous prima donnas with die Metropolitan Opera Company, were scheduled to make an appearance in New York that evening. She also mentioned that she corresponded regularly with Betty lennis, who was head of the surgery department at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, and with Mary Ann Maynard, who was Principal of the Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in the same city. Our first stop was New York, where we had a plane checkup. Being rather hungry, I decided to go over to the Biltmore Hotel for lunch. As I enteredthe dining room, I recognized the tall gentleman at the table next tc mine as a former classmate, Henry Zukowski, who was now the star center for the New York Knickerbockers. He had the amazing average of 33. 5 points a game. During our conversation he told me that Alec Vickowski had recently been elected president of Norwich Military Academy in Vermont. The hour passed very quickly, and l had to rush back to the airport. I boarded the plane at eleven o'clock, and it seemed that in no time at all I had arrived in Chicago. Fred was on hand to meet me with his ever welcoming smile. The weather was so beautiful that we decided to attend the ball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Washington Senators. We could hardly believe our eyes, but, yes-there they were-two of our D, l-LS, classmates were among the star players. Donald Pielock, who had a forty game winning streak, was starting for the Cubs, and Francis Descavich, who had signed his eighteenth contract, was playing at shortstop. After the game, we were privileged to have a delightful visit with Don and Fran, and they told us that Robert Thompson was the Director of the Federal Income Tax Division with headquarters, of course, in Washington. Other interesting bits of news were that Stanley lennis had invented a jet engine which operated on atomic power. There was no questioning his prosperity. Certainly success had come to George Noska, too, for he had been elected treasurer of a tremendous chain of contracting firms throughout the South. and he still owned the Gables Roller-Skating Rink in South Deerfield. We were thrilled to hear, also, that Joe Valeski was the owner of a large hamster farm in Australia, and that the business was especially profitable. It surely seemed good to talk over the days we spent at Deerfield High. 28 The next moming Fred and I once more boarded the plane, and, after a short time, arrived in Miami. To our surprise, we were greeted by William Wolfram, when we landed. He said that Don Pielock had telegraphed him that we were coming. Bill was a super-Chevrolet salesman and Vice- president of the General Motors Corporation. As we began reminiscing of the days we had spent at D,l-I. S. , he told us that Jane Halladay was the wealdiy owner of a large cattle ranch in Colorado, and that she was then enjoying a tour of Europe. That night we stayed at Bill's palatial home where we were treated royally. The next afternoon we had the pleasure of swimming at Miami Beach. After a pleasure- able week's stay in the tropical city, we made ready for a non-stop flight to Los Angeles. When we arrived in the beautiful westem city, we were discovering that the place was all it was supposed to be when we chanced to notice two gaily laughing young ladies strolling along the board- walk. We looked at our former classmates with astonishment, and then we remembered Sally Farrick and Marion Boro. They were now owners of the large chain of dnrg stores throughout the leading cities of the United States. In exchanging bits of news of our former pals, we were thrilled to leam that Nancy Boro and Regina Klepadlo held responsible secretarial positions with die United Nations Organization. Sally had received a letter from Wanda Kuznik in which Wanda stated that she was extremely happy in her work as designer in Lord and Tay1or's Fashionable Fifth Avenue Millinery Salon. We marvelled, too, when we heard of the rapid progress that Bob Hoynoskl and Vincent Podlesney had made. They were now coaching the hoopsters at the University of Notre Dame andwere currently writing a new set of basketball rules. Thus far we had been having a grand time in that we had seen or heard about many of our old friends. Three days later we resumed our trip with our next stop at Seattle. At a news stand I- purchased the evening paper The Seattle Courant, and a front-page item attracted my attention. It stated that Miss Elizabeth Raffa, superintendent of nurses at the Seattle City Hospital, had received a splendid promotion. She had previously toured Europe, making visits to foreign clinics in the study of a cure for cancer, and had now been invited to accept the position of superintendent of nurses at the Mayo Clinic at Rochester, Minnesota. As we walked along Broadway the next morning, we entered a large and exclusive sporting goods store to inquire about an expensive pair of ice skates that we saw in the window. Imagine our surprise to discover that the proprietor was none other than Edward Sakowicz. Not only did he own this store but many others like it throughout the West. He said that Bob Peloskie was a civil engineer in Alaska and was supervising the Alaskan Highway Project. After a short but pleasant visit we left for our plane which was prepared to take off at noon. We flew from Seattle to Columbus, Ohio, where we had a two -hour stopover. Upon entering one of the Fanny Farmer's candy shops, we were greeted by Janet Otto who was now the owner of the famous stores, and who was on a tour of inspection in the West at that time. Her assistants were Dora Kaiser and Barbara Clark, who had both won national recognition as makers of fine candies. We had a very pleasant visit with them, and then we retumed to the airport to complete the last link of our cruise. How quickly those two hours had passed! Before we realized it, we were on the plane again headed for home. With throngs of happy memories, we understood how fortunate we were to have had the joyous experience of meeting or hearing about all the 1951 graduating class of Deerfield High. Merit Dwight 29 LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT Sally Farrick gives four inches of her height to Rose Pos who needs it. Frederick Giebel leaves his refined manner, his ambition, and enthusiastic spirit of cooperation to Stanley Pelis who could use any one of these characteristics. Donald Pielock leaves William Shakespeare to Stephen Savinski, who met the great dramatist three years ago but isn 't too well acquainted with him yet. Vincent Podlesney bequeaths his love for square dancing to Anthony Bechta, who doesn't as yet have any desire to trip the light fantastic. Betty Raffa leaves her pep in cheerleading to Marlene Wroblewski for the benefit and inspiration of next year's athletes. Edward Sakowicz leaves his fine tenor voice to Raymond Upright, who aspires to be with the Metropolitan Opera Company some day. Robert Thompson leaves his habit of constant chatter in study halls to John Darr, who has already shown promise in that respect. Joseph Valeski leaves his curly hair to Avis Sumner so that she won't have to spend the noon hour in front of the mirror to arrange her page-boy hair-do. Alec Vickowski leaves his gum-chewing proficiency to Billy Thompson, who will not need much practice to become skillful in the art. Jayne Whitney leaves her flirtatious manner to Marcella Shumway. William Wolfram leaves his aptitude for receiving report cards in technicolor to Donald Patnode. Edward Zobriski leaves his position as manager of the basketball team to Donald Grybko, who we trust will be as efficient in that capacity as Edward was. I S JUNIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 8, l948, forty-three new students filled with excitement and great expectations entered Deerfield High School. To be sure, our new environment was strange, but the teachersand upperclassmen were very patient and considerate. Within a short time, we settled down to our regular routine and found our days filled with happiness, but also hard work. Our first responsibility came with the election of class officers as follows: President, Darrell Brown: Vice-president, Barbara Farrick: Secretary, Janet Ware: and Treasurer, Eleanor Neiskoski . Several Freshmen became valuable players on the baseball, football, and basketball teams, and, from their performances, we anticipated a bright future for D. H. S. Dorothy Podlesney was chosen Freshman cheerleader this year. After the excellent performances of Eleanor Neiskoski, Suzanne Brown, and Richard Peloskie in Here Comes Patricia , we needed not further proof that fine dramatic talent was evident in our class. All members of our class showed decidedly keen interest in the extra-curricular activities and supported them whole- heartedly. And we had a great deal of funl After a pleasant summer vacation, we entered upon our Sophomore year, filled with a new confidence. Now, thirty-eight in number, we were less shy, and more enthusiastic than ever. Class officers chosen for this year were: President, Halbert Shumway: Vice-president, Marguerite Plante: Secretary, Clark Bridges: and Treasurer, Patricia Cuff. Marguerite Plante, Patricia Cuff, and Dorothy Podlesney were the Sophomore members of the cheering squad. William Thompson and Darrell Brown were awarded D's for football. Suzanne Brown, Richard Peloskie, John Maclntosh, and Jane Newcomb were the stars in the three- act play Almost Eighteen presented by the Dramatic Club. The rest of the year was rather insignificant, but we Sophomores weren't. We had many A's but iust as many mischief makers. The summer months of our vacation flew quickly by, bringing us to the entrance of our Junior year. 'Twas September, l950, and we were pleased, at last, to be considered upperclassmen: we truly felt right at home and quite important. This year we chase for our President, John Macintosh: Richard Peloskie was elected Vice-president: Marilyn Leavitt was our choice for Secretary: our Treasurer was Halbert Shumway. Student Council members chosen were: Halbert Shumway, Patricia Cuff, and John Maclntosh. In the field of sports our boys played prominent parts in football, basketball, and baseball. Junior members of the football squad this year were: Darrell Brown, William Thompson, Robert Rodovich, Richard Peloskie, Raymond Boyden, Donald Patnode, and Frank McMillen. Richard Peloskie, William Thompson, Stephen Savinski, Darrell Brown, and Halbert Shumway received varsity letters in basketball. Doing an outstanding iob on the girls' basketball team were: Jean Konvelski, Patricia Cuff, Rose Pos, Marguerite Plante, Barbara Farrick, Patricia Martell, and Beverly Maynard. Dorothy Podlesney was appointed assistant manager of the team. During the year we lost seven classmates--John Macintosh, Marilyn Leavitt, Gerald Hicks, Suzanne Brown, Edna Lapine, Robert Lively, and Robert St. Hilaire. The Dramatic Club again drew forth our promising actors and actresses. Jean Konvelski, Eleanor Neiskoski, Richard Peloskie, John Maclntosh, and Lois Dwight showed their prowess by their admirable performances in the school play, Gone With The Girls. The Junior Girls gained top honors in both the girls' intramural volleyball and basketball tournaments. Our first great event of the Junior year was our class fair held on October 27. It proved to be a huge success. But the climax of our year came in April, when, amid the usual glamour, we sponsored our first formal dance, the Junior Prom. With the help of our adviser, Miss Peterson, all the details were arranged. We worked prodigiously and succeeded in transforming the gymnasium into a Chinese garden setting. Jerry Noble and his Socialites furnished the music, and the result of our efforts was a beautiful and muchtalked- about affair. With the passing of the final examinations came the close of our third school year at Deerfield High We hope that we may all return in September as dignified Seniors, ready to enioy our fourth and last year-- the most important one in our high school course. We Freshmen, thirty-four in number, trembled in the excitement of the first day of high school. Several came from out of town, and it was going to be difficult to become acquainted with the many students, nevertheless, it seemed wonderful to meet new friends. Later, at the class meeting, with the aid of Miss McKay and Mr. Frigard, officers were elected as follows: President, Alice Boyden: Vice-president, Richard Scovilleg Secretary, Eunice Scheidingg Treasurer, Dorothy Gustavis. Mr. Beres was appointed our class adviser, Three of our classmates--Alice Boyden, Connie Zukowski, and Anthony Bechta--were representatives to the Student Council. The Orientation Club for Freshmen, was organized with Miss Peterson and Miss Maiewski as advisers. Some of our activities included learning cheers, presenting the Christmas Pageant, and leaming to dance. Our class was well represented in sports. Only one boy--Pierre Plante--was awarded a foot- ball letter, while Tony Bechta and Edward Zdanowicz received basketball letters. Nancy Farrick was chosen Freshmen cheerleader. George Spafford left us after Christmas vacation and moved to Vermont, while Dorothy Page became na new member of our class. During the Red Cross Drive at school, the Class of '53 displayed a fine spirit and contributed a sizeable sum to that worthy cause. In June came the cramming for the final exams, and before we realized it, our Freshman year had ended. We returned in September with the air of old-timers. We had acquired poiseg we had served our apprenticeship, we had quite grown up. This year we found that five of our classmates--Robert Wilson, Frank Dudek, Pierre Plante, Dorothy Gustavis, and Carolyn Baldwin--were not with us. They had either transferred to other schools or had moved away. Our class officers chosen for this year were: President, Edward Zdanowiczg Vice-president, Alice Boydeng Secretary, Lucy Nartowiczg Treasurer, Connie Zukowski. Three of our classmates-- Edward Zdanowicz, Barbara Sodoski, and Alice Boyden--were elected as representatives to the Student Council. In October Eunice Scheiding left us, and Rose Olson, a new member, joined our ranks. Sophomore members of the football squad this year were Fred Thompson, Tony Bechta, Conrad Valeski, Charlie Vickowski, and Richard Scoville. Lucy Nartowicz, the first in our class to make her stage debut, performed in Gone With the Girls. In girls' basketball, Nancy Farrick and Alice Boyden received letters. The names of Alice Boyden, Virginia St, Peter, Wilma Thom, and Conrad Valeski appeared on the Honor Roll. Nancy Maynard was elected to the cheering squad. Now as our sophomore year draws to a close, we look backward to memories of wonderful times and friendships never to be forgotten. We sincerely hope that our next two years at Deerfield High will be as happy and successful as our Freshman and Sophomore years have been. Our class included boys and girls from the neighboring towns of Conway, Sunderland, and Whately as well as all parts of Deerfield. There was, of course, the usual hurry and bewilderment. Everything was new and exciting to us, but we soon adjusted ourselves and started our joumey on the Road of Knowledge . Under the direction of our class advisor, Mr. Frigard, we elected our class officers. They were as follows: President, Robert Caron, Vice-president, John Darrg Secretary, Jane Hutkowski, Treasurer, Nancy Skribiski. During the fall Stanley Bozek, Guy Hosley, and Robert Caron were the only Freshmen to display their excellent ability on the gridiron, and Robert Caron had the distinction of receiving a football letter. The Orientation Club, in which all First -Year students were required to enroll, was in existence again this year under the direction of Miss Maiewski and Miss Peterson. The purpose of the club was to help improve our manners and to learn the fundamentals of social etiquette, Stanley Bozek and Margery Podlesney were chosen as representatives to the Student Council. Robert Caron, as president of our class, was also a member. The Freshmen were well represented at the enjoyable l-lick Hops which were sponsored by the Student Council. Dramatic talent was evident among our members as we watched Stanley Wojtkielewicz perform in Gone with the Girls , When the basketball season rolled around, John Darr, Stanley Wojtkielewicz, Joseph Sadowski, and Donald Vickowski were chosen to play on the second team. Nancy Morrissey and Grace McMillen were the prominent players on the second team of the girls' basketball squad, while Theresa Pielock was the peppy cheerleader elected from our group. The names of several members of the Class of '54 appeared on the scholastic Honor Roll, and we are very pleased with our excellent record as students. Of the events we have attended while here at Deerfield High we shall especially remember the school dances and the fun we have had in our club activities. We also appreciate the efforts of the teachers to make our school life pleasant and profitable. As our Freshman year comes to a close, we look forward with eager anticipation to the next three years of our high school career. That chess is perhaps the oldest of all games is generally knowng it has also been said that it is the most civilized of games. There is no luck in chess, the game is astruggle between opposed minds, wills, and intellects. The student of chess will leam prudence, foresight and planning, he must leam persever- ance, and he may leam much more. Whether we may produce a future master of the game, only time will tellg but it is certain that we have produced new enthusiasts for the chess world. 48 ART DEPARTMENT Barbara Charsky Lucy Nartowicz, Mary Ann Maynard, Jane Newcomb, Richard Peloskie Edward Sakowrcz Barbara Farrick, Francis Deskcvicn, Carol Jenny, Lawrence Rura Stephen Savrnski Joseph Valeski, Darrell Brown, Robert Rodovich, Donald Grybko Allan Bridges Eleanor Nreskoski, Clark Bridges. Football Football, notwithstanding a short schedule this year, has become very popular at Deerfield. Everybody was again enthusiastic about the sport, and the squad proved to be most efficient. Early in the season, Coach John Frigard was greeted by a large turnout of players, some of whom met with injuries in the games. Due to the untiring efforts of our coach and the co- operation of everyone, the team accomplished much more than the record of one win, one tie, and two defeats shows. Wehave much praise and gratitude for all those who helped in any way to make the Booster Day Game with Arms Academy the great success that it was.
