It was, remarked Thomas Jefferson, the best school of politi- cal liberty the world ever saw. Compactness also made for community responsibility and better schools. The Puritans were eager to have their children learn to read, in order to search the sacred Bookn for God's will. Puritan Massachusetts, not surprisingly, established the first public schools in America, and created the best educational facilities in the colonies. The impact of New England on the rest of the nation has been incalculable. A people courageous, conscien- tious, and willing to sacrifice for beliefs, they made their idealism of Plymouth Rock a national symbol. As f'linty as their stones, as stiff as their cuffs and col- lars, they cross-fertilized innumerable other communi- ties with their ideals and democratic practices. The New England conscience added something' indispens- able to the fiber and backbone of Deerfield Academy and its graduates.

His many civic activities in- clude the Presidency of the Institute for the Crippled and the Chairmanship of the American Heart Association. FRANK L. BOYDEN has been Headmaster of Deeriield since 1902, and he is currently a trustee of Amherst College and President of the Board of Trustees at the University of Massachusetts. A member of Deerfield's Class of 1922 and a graduate of Cornell, VICTOR L. BUT- TERFIELD serves on the New England Board of Higher Education and with the Ameri- can Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the President of Wesleyan University. HOWARD COONLEY graduated from Har- vard and became a trustee of Deerfield in 1927. He directed the conservation divi- sion of the War Production Board and is the former President and Chairman of the Walworth Corporation. A director of the Loomis Sayles Mutual Fund and a trustee of the Suffolk Frank- lin Savings Bank, U. HASKELL CROCKER graduated from Deerield in 1921 and is an alumnus of Harvard University. HENRY N. ELYNT is a trustee of Williams and has served as Chairman of Deeriield's Board of Trustees since 1943. He is the President of the Pocumtuck Valley Me- morial Association as well as the Heritage Foundation. JOHN S. HILSON, Deerfield '33, attended Princeton and is today a partner in the investment banking firm of Wertheim and Company as well as a director of Data- Control Systems, Inc. A graduate of the Academy in 1930, ALEXANDER JOHNSON is a partner in the firm of Cyrus J. Lawrence and Sons of New York and a director of the Western Maryland Railroad Company. ROBERT MAYNARD attended Amherst with the Headmaster and has been a trustee since 1924. He has served as Presi- dent and Chairman of the R.H. Stearns Company and as a director of the New England Telephone and Telegraph Com- pany. The President and Chairman of the Homer National Bank of Homer, New York, RANDOLPH V. MILLER graduated from Deerfield in 1924 and is also the President of the R. H. Miller Company. LEWIS PERRY is an alumnus of Williams and taught at the Lawrenceville School be- fore becoming Headmaster of Phillips Exeter Academy: a position which he held for thirty-two years. CARL RAY, Deerfield '33, is a vice-presi- dent of the Royal McBee Corporation and a member of the American Management Association. A partner in the law firm of Stoddard. Ball, Bartlett, and Trudel, CHARLES N. STODDARD graduated from Deerfield in 1928 and is a trustee of the Franklin Savings Institution. ROBERT W.
