It was, remarked Thomas Jefferson, the best school of politi- cal liberty the world ever saw. Compactness also made for community responsibility and better schools. The Puritans were eager to have their children learn to read, in order to search the sacred Bookn for God's will. Puritan Massachusetts, not surprisingly, established the first public schools in America, and created the best educational facilities in the colonies. The impact of New England on the rest of the nation has been incalculable. A people courageous, conscien- tious, and willing to sacrifice for beliefs, they made their idealism of Plymouth Rock a national symbol. As f'linty as their stones, as stiff as their cuffs and col- lars, they cross-fertilized innumerable other communi- ties with their ideals and democratic practices. The New England conscience added something' indispens- able to the fiber and backbone of Deerfield Academy and its graduates.
