RESERVE EA$KETEALM The reserve basketball team deserves much credit. It was mostly composed of new, green men who had little experience on the court. F ram, these fellows Coach Bethel fashioned an enthusiastic squad. Although Deer Park didngt fare so well this year, we feel sure that their enthusiasm will endure and inspire them on to a victorious future. There were a few bright spots in the season. With a seasorfs experience of tough competition in the new league behind them, the boys, chances of a much more successful season next year are very bright. FIRST Row: P. Hwy, L, L'uilxj', .4. Hard smashing fullbacks, fleet halfs, slick quarterbacks, stonewall lines, and plenty tough linemen, were obstacles our Scarlet and Gray warriors pounded against in their first year of 11-man foot- ball competition. Being pounded and battered into shreds in our thrust three games failed to dampen the unquenchable flame that had seized the Wildcats. Con- sequently, four of the next hve games were well earned and glorious victories. In the baptism of 17w Lochland well deserved to win a night battle but were able to score only once in the 191ml half. 30 t0 0. N0 alibis are needed for the hue showing against Wyoming, when the Cow- boys won over our mistakes by a four touchdown margin, 25 t0 0. The North College Hill contest pro- duced the low point in the seasonfs play. 21 Clearly outclassed, the Wildcats battled stubbornly to score its first touchdown. 46 t0 6. The first game before the home crewd proved the tonic needed as Ohio M ilitary Institute failed to score after Fisher had thrown H alley a six point pass. This tough, hard fought game marked the turning point of the year. 6 to 0. A successful invasion of Seven Mileis- domain was climaxed by Edgmon heaving a desperation pass in the last seconds to Don Lambert that clicked and brought our second victory. 13 t0 6. Reading was successful in stopping touchdown marches by the Scarlet and Gray Wildcats to protect a 21 t0 7 lead for our 1713!: defeat on the home lot. WAIR$1HFW BASKEWEALL This year the basketball boys fwd tough opponents to battle. The team. developed into a well-organized squad and settled down to the tasks before them. M uch credit is due Coach Bethel for his eforts in the development of plays best suited for these fellows. Deer Park can look back at the 1944 season as an uphill struggle. Inexperience in the city school league was largely responsible for our adversities. However, we are looking for these fellows to really stand out in basketball in future years. 23
