IT IS AN OFFICIAL, CHRONOLOGICAL RECORD EXPRESSING THE ACTIVITIES AND DAY-TO-DAY EVENTS OF EVERYONE BE- LONGING TO DEER LAKES HIGH SCHOOL FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR FROM SEPTEMBER, 1980, TO JUNE 1981. THIS VOLUME OF THE ACCOLADE WILL REMAIN FOREVER A PLACE FOR REFLECTION FOR ALL WHO OWN IT. FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE SENIORS, NOW AT A TURNING POINT IN THEIR LIVES | WOULD LIKE TO SAY THAT THE OCCASIONAL NEGATIVE CRITICISM DRAWN BY OUR CLASS DOES NOT TRULY REFLECT THE TOTAL IMAGE THE CLASS OF 1981 HAS GENERATED. ON OCCASION OUR CLASS HAS BEEN REFERRED TO AS HAVING IMMATURE AND NEGATIVE ELEMENTS. BUT THE SE SHOULD NOT BE USED TO CHARACTERIZE AND IDENTIFY ALL THE CREATIVE AND OUTSTANDING INDIVIDUALS IN THE CLASS WHO HAVE CONTRIBUT- ED SIGNIFICANTLY TO THE IMAGE OF DEER LAKES HIGH SCHOOL. ACCOLADES TO THE SENIORS WHO HAVE BEEN A CREDIT TO OUR SCHOOL AND THEMSELVES. JULIE EICHNER, CLASS PRESIDENT, WAS TIRELESS IN HER EFFORTS TO KEEP OUR CLASS TOGETHER. STAR QUALITIES AND SHOWMANSHIP IN DRAMA ILLUSTRATED THE UNIQUE TALENTS OF CONNIE RUNAS. MARIA ARENA, A WINNER EVEN WITHOUT A PAGEANT, HAS DISPLAYED CHARM, BEAUTY, CHARACTER AND ATHLETIC SKILLS. MARK OSELE, A BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SCHOLAR, WILL ENTER [H= UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA TO STUDY CHEMICAL ENGINEERING. DAN KUNIAK’S TALENT, WIT AND £cARGY COMBINED WITH THE DEVOTION HE HAS GIVEN HIS STUDY OF MAGIC CAN ONLY BE DESCRIBED 4S DAZZLING. THE ATHLETIC ABILITIES OF FOOTBALL PLAYERS (SCOTT GREENAWALT, STEVE SCIMIO, CHUCK BRNARDIC, NICK YECKEL, DANA WANGLER), AND THE OUTSTANDING TALENTS OF CLASSMATES !) OTHER SPORTS (R.J.CHLEBOSKI, GARY BULLARD, JEFF GENTILE, TOM PURCELL, JIM JOHNSON, RUSS LONG, TIM 0° MIA, LORI FLEISSNER, SUE MASARIK) WILL LEAD TO MORE SUCCESS STORIES IN THE “UTURE. AR! TIC TALENTS WERE DEMONSTRATED BY PETE MCNALLY AND JUDY PETROVICH. THE Gh UATES OF — W. BEATTIE TECHNICAL SCHOOL PROGRAMS FIND THEIR OWN WAYS TO BE DISTINCTIVE. THIS YEAR nY STOBERT WAS THE FIRST WOMAN TO GRADUATE FROM THE CARPENTRY CLASS. PC BAMRIK Te) SHELLY NOLAN, PARAMEDICS, ARE AMONG THE MANY MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 1981 WH. RE SHARING THEMSELVES WITH THE COMMUNITY, MENTIONED IN THE PREVIOUS PARAGRAPH ARE ONLY A FEW EXAMPLES OF CLASSMATES WH VE CONTRIBUTED POSITIVE CREDITS TO THE ACCOLADES DESERVING OF THE CLASS OF 1981. YES, NY WENT UNMENTIONED IN THIS WRITING, AND STILL MORE HAVE YET TO SHOW THE WORLD THEIR TAL+ |S. THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS WE HAVE MADE IN HIGH SCHOOL MAY FORETELL WHAT WE WILL DO LAER. AS INDIVIDUALS WE HAVE TO KEEP STRIVING TO DO ALL THAT IS DEMANDED OF US BY DESTINY. OUR LIVES DO NOT END WITH GRADUATION, THEY ARE JUST BEGINNING. WHAT COULD BE MORE POSITIVE THAN TO BEGIN THE FUTURE WITH YOUTH, STRONG MINDS, PRECIOUS LIFETIMES TO LIVE OUT, AND A BEAUTIFUL EARTH ON WHICH TO LIVE THEM? THE KEY IS TO REALIZE EXACTLY HOW PRECIOUS THESE GIFTS ARE AND TO USE THEM WISELY. THESE ELEMENTS BASIC TO LIFE SHOULD NOT BE ABUSED THIS SCHOOL YEAR HAS SEEN THE ELECTION OF PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN, THE RELEASE G THE HOSTAGES FROM IRAN, THE VOLCANIC DESTRUCTION OF MT. ST. HELENS, THE END OF “DISCO”, THE BEGINNINGS OF THE “URBAN COWBOYS”, “PREPPIE CLOTHING’, AND A RERUN OF PENNSYLVANIA POTHOLES. LOC ALLY, THE SEWAGE ISSUE, AND FINANCIAL DISTRESS ARE AMONG THE WOES PLAGUING THE COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL DISTRICT. THOUGH FADS COME AND GO, DESTRUCTION FROM NATURAL DISASTERS WILL CONTINUE TO PLAGUE US, AND THE ISSUES OF POLITICS KEEP SURFACING, WE STILL HAVE SOMETHING IN WHICH TO INVEST OUR HOPES AND DREAMS. FOR US, OUR FUTURE LIES IN THE NEW TOMORROW. THE NEW TOMORROW HOLDS OUR EXPECTATIONS FOR A BETTER WORLD BECAUSE WE BELIEVE OURSELVES TO BE A NEW BREED OF POSITIVE HUMAN BEINGS WHO HAVE INHERITED THE RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE IT SO. MRS. ANNETTE K. SCHEID PATIENCE! PERFECTION! PRECISION! DISCIPLINE! PUNCTUAL! RESPONSIBLE! THOROUGH! COMPLETE! ACCURATE! Over the years, these demands and more were heard by your students in the business class: you taught. With mixed emotions (and reactions), they were received by the students. Sometim ve know, the responses returned to you by the students left you questioning your own direction. But se events describe the daily events in the life of a teacher... especially one such as you, MRS. SS’ _|D. Nr err. io liste fisssisassscsncecssavedssoosscessscoveveasencenesee+sosssessosene A clear fact prevailed as the force responsible for overriding our complaints and grumbles. Your reputation for teaching and preparing students in business subjects has long filtered through to us. Our sisters, cousins and friends, your former students, have all returned with words of wisdom, ‘'you will appreciate what you did in Mrs. Scheid’s classes once you start to work or go on to school!” While we certainly appreciated the academic instruction you administered, you were equally gener- ous with your time, interest in us as human beings, and your concern for our future. We knew it was important to you to exist as a model, to set an example for us as future business persons. Thank you, Mrs. Scheid, because you have been all of these to us. We will always admire you because you were an excellent teacher, and a truly, lovely lady. ES AIRS ION once cco secciuncvescaces Ernersuascaseiachae Pee OPN De ics gna ravacosUnss7canusies eeusxainex’ Quiet and sometimes appearing shy, Mrs. Scheid, our co-worker, could be described as being a workaholic. Extra hours spent on classroom activities and preparations, extra-curricular sponsorships, and performing business services for the school were jobs so generously accommodated by Mrs. Scheid. Mrs. Scheid found it impossible to refuse a request for help. Dedicated, gentle, compassionate and thoughtful are the thoughts you, Annette, bring to the minds of fellow staff members. Good luck, Mrs. Scheid. Let these years of retirement be filled to the brim with good health, happiness and exciting new adventures. Sincerely and with Love, The Students, Faculty and Administration i Deer Lakes Senior High School © 252 June 5, 1981
