--r ,ji 7? 5.3 47 'Ja 5 R,- wa T, WHO IS RESPONSIBLE? Qgsglfl PARE SUS TEAC YGU In your lifetime you will undoubtedly hear the success or failure of certain people contri- buted to each of the above. Such things asg He was a good kid, but he got in with the wrong crowd. or No wonder he's a success. Look how rich his parents were. It is true that these four factors contribute greatly to the building of your character and influence your life to a large extent. But the person who is really responsible for your actions is you. You can be forced into situations in which you must decide which road to take, but the final choice is up to you. You are responsible--for your successes and your failures. Begin today to plan your future and to think for yourself. You can be what you want to be if you take the initiative to overcome odds that are against you and don't become a quitter. Set your goal and then work toward it, accepting other people's advice but not being swayed by it. In the future when you must answer to yourself for what you have done with your life, you will know who was responsible. Make yours a future to be proud of. The Class of 967 is proud to present the 1967 Toksali XY: rqq ' 1 L gg in gi, X .Ma W3 4 N 'EJ ' N W lf'-fi v-1 DEDICATION This year the '67 graduating class dedicates the Toksali to a teacher who some of the students may not know personally, although they have surely heard of her many accomplishments during her years of teaching at Dee-Mack. Those of us who had her as Jr. class sponsor wonder how this year's Junior class managed during homecoming week and preparations for the Prom without her help and guidance. Because of illness, she was not able to teach this year and now will be retiring. We all wish her a happy and satisfying life of leisure after working so willingly for us, as we dedicate the '67 Toksali to Mrs. Ruth Nixon. 2 EDITORS Kaye Dunn, Linda Mitchell JR. Tremont Eur eka Maroa Woodland Morton Havana Astoria Valley A victoryis not educational un- less you can compare it with the defeat you were escaping. You lose sight of that defeat unless it occas- ionally catches up with you. An occasional defeat brings your head down and re-teaches an old lesson: A living organism must struggle for its place in the sun or it perishes. We lost some close games this year against some good football schools, and I believe we have learn- ed our lesson well. Better prepara- tion, greater determinationg more sacrifice, and harder work. Winning is positive. Losing is negative. Let's always be positive! GO get 'em, Chiefs, go get 'em. MOST IMPROVED PLAYER Mike Wurmnest Coach Nelson gives the boys a few pointers. BASKETBALL 1 The Varsity basketball team finished the 1966-67 season with a 9-17 record. Although the season was a long one, it did have some bright spots. The best game of the year for Dee Mack was 70 to 50 upset over San Jose. The most excitement took place in a five over- time Win over Stanford 34 to 32. Individual honors went to the following boys: Paul Mountjoy--Most Valuable Player and Co- captain. Joe Snyder-- Co-captain and most steals and assists. Jim Baurer--Lions Club Free Throw award A little higher, Paul. - v Look out behind you! Y 73 Teamwork, boys, teamwork J.V. The Fresh-Soph Basketball team for the 1966-67 had a season record of 7 wins and 18 losses. This record doesn't really give a true evaluation of the team. Due to the fact thatwe lost two sophomores to varsity competition, we were a freshman team in a sophomore league. After the loss of Stan Lape and Jim Bauer, who together were averaging about 40 points a game, we were forced to start four freshmen and one sophomore. Although this young ball club lost 12 games in a row, we lost 9 of these games by 5 points or less. This says at least one thing-- the team never quit or let down for a second. If I would make a statement about this ball club for the future Iwould say this--With all of this young experienced talent back for the season of '67 and '68,and with a record of 7 and 18 for the season of '66 and '67 we have only one Way to go--Up! .J l gf Mr, Young chalks up plays for the next game. Five regulars hit over .300, which has to rate as one of our best hitting teams in quite a few years. The stable leadership of our senior squad members blended well with the inexperienced Juniors and Sophomores. The Blue Chip hitter this year was Doug Aeschliman with a lusty .383 average. Joe Snyder was an honorary Captain with a pitching record of 7-2 and E.R.A. of 1.34. Seniors you may be proud of your 68- 11-1 baseball record during your tenure at DeeMack. A lot of work goes into earning a diploma. Your name on one indicates a measure of achievement of which you can feel proud. But a diploma is only a milestone-a mea- surement of what you have done. Now '... how about doing something with it? For example, what are your plans for fur- thering your education? If that isnit possible, then how about looking for a job with a company for whom you can work as beneficially as you worked for your diploma? Personal effort is the essence of success- the key to your progress. That precious piece of paper you receive graduation day can help you unlock a bright future-as bright as you strive to make it. May your future be a fine one! CATERPILLAR 135 Sales North 8a Side Service NORTHSIDE of Square TV 81 APPLIANCES R. G. Herbst Chuck Alexander, Mgr. Compliments TAZEWELL VETERINARY CLINIC Dr. H.R.
