MESSAGEFRO TIfIE UPERI TE DE T ' '-qi, :- i f EEEE E The class of 1957 deserves commendation for the organization, for the financing, and for a successful campaign in the distribution of their yearbook. Planning for solicitation of ad- vertising was well done and equally executed. Their zeal in the collection of material and the compilation of the book is the result of the effort of a staff that would not be satisfied with what was second- best. Ably guided and encouraged by a capable sponsor, all persons should be elated by their handiwork. ' f MR. EWMAN SPEAKS E Alu- TO THE CLASS OF 1957: Congratulations to the class of 1957 for their very fine yearbook. It contains many plea- sant experiences that will be cherished for years. The enthusiasm and spirit which are found in this yearbook reflect a trend of what can be expected of you in the future. My sincere thanks to you for the opportunity of serving you these past years. I wish you the best for continued suc- cess in the future. It seemed good to see my fellow classmates after graduation from Deemack High ten years ago. My first stop was New York City. Ihopped in a cab, and who do you think the driver was? None other than my old buddy, Bill J epsen. He was the one that gave me the infor- mation about New York's most famous Reducing Salon. The sign on the Salon read, Let Carpenter work on you and you will look New'ell all over. It was run by my old friends Marlene Carpenter and Sharon Newell. Next, I thought I would drop by and see the President in Washington, D.C. I sat in on a Congress meeting. A representative from Illinois stood up and disagreed whole heartedly at what was being said. You guessed it, it was none other than our joker, Robert Chaffer. I didn't get to talk to him, but I left a note with his private secretary, who to my amazement was Miss Judith Eaton. I decided to stay overnite in Washington, so I checked in at the Bel-Aire Hotel. I was talking to the bell-hop who was my old pal, John Widmer. He told me that our easy- going Joe Dewey from DeeMack was manager at the hotel The next morning I took off in the TWA airplane for Indiana. The stewardess was Mary Kate Traylor who told me she was resigning to be married. While in Indiana I decided to go to the stock car races. The driver of the winning car was Dick Cresham. The next evening I made my appearance at the Notre Dame vs Northwestern football game. The winning team, of course, was Notre Dame under the expert leadership of our old football star Pat Thompson. I decided that my next stop would be Chicago, Illinois. On my tour of the windy city, I first visited Field Museum where Ifound that the world's most famous painting J 'accuseI, had been painted by Deemack's own artist Miss Carol Washburn. That evening I spent the evening at the Chez Paree where Gnile Connett's famous dance band was playing. I got a chance to speak with Gnile and he informed me that after he closed the next week, John Mulvaney and Tom Osman would be featured'with their guitars. The next day I thought I would get a new suit before leaving Chicago. Iwent to Marshal-Fields and who do you think I found was the manager, none other than Gary Bonham. I found he sure had changed, and Fifi, he now wears a belt. As I was walking through the loop I met our volley ball star Lois Wyss. We had a nice little visit and she told me she was a PE teacher at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I decided then to go to Lincoln, Nebraska, to visit my relatives. While in Lincoln I was informed that my old bosom pal John Allred was a floor sander for Nebraska's college gym floors. When I heard that the rodeo would soon be in Cheyenne, Wyoming, Idecided to go. I had the surprise of my life when Melvin Marsh and Alvan Clark rode out of chutes 10 and 12 on bucking broncs. C ASS PROPHECY From some friends in Cheyenne I learned that Dick Keyser was the president of the Catt1emen's Association. I renteda car and rode out to his farm for a talk. We discussed old times at Deemack and then he mentioned that Ron Viemont had just left for Washington. It seems that Ron was a famous criminal lawyer and was gathering information for a case he was working on. The next morning I left Cheyenne by train for Las' Vegas. On the train I found that my seat pardner was none other than Yvonne Rich. Deemack graduates sure get around. Arriving in Las Vegas I checked in at the hotel. In the evening I decided to go the gambling casino for dinner. There I found Shelby Naffziger was the manager and part owner of the casino. I thought Ihad been surprised before but this took the cake. Well Fifi, I finally made it to Hollywood, When I arrived Iwas so hungry that I headed straight for the Brown Derby. The Derby, as usual, was crowded so I had to wait for a seat. While Iwas waiting, Hollywood's greatest actor came in and took his reserved seat. I had heard a lot about Gilbert Newman but Ihad never seen him or his pictures. Fifi, this Gilbert Newman was none other than, Dave Bartlett. I was so surprised Inearly fainted. Dave, or rather Gilbert, recognized me and asked me to join him for lunch. He's making a new movie and I sure won't miss it. He gave me a pass so I could sit in on a production that the Charmers were singing in. The Charmers were Deemack's own ensemble composed of Margie Dilkey, Mary Fairchild, Judy Blair, Juanita Embry, Karen Naffziger, and -Carol Gillespie. 'I'hey sure have gone places in this world. After lunch I decided to go over to the Studio to see them in action. Ihad to go through a lot of red tape and finally I came to the last policewoman. Fifi, you'l1 never guess who it was. It was Martha Dallinger. She gave me directions and I went into the Studio. It was just marvelous seeing those girls again. After I had visited Hollywood Idecidedtogo back to good old Mackinaw. It sure was a marvelous trip. I want to make another one next year. Ihad better close before I go bankrupt buying paper. Write me soon and have fun on your trip. As the Deemack Marching Band it performed at four of our football games, one of whichrin- cluded the homecoming parade. It stepped quickly to lead the Halloween parade on the night of October 27. At the I.S.N,U, homecoming parade the members practically ran to fill in an open place left by the preceding band just before the judges box. They filled the hole and were rated fairly high by the judges. At the Deemack pep band, they played at three pep assemblies and ten home games. They also played at Morton during the tournaments. The third accomplishment was the concert band. The first performance of the year was at the Deer Creek P.T.A. Meeting on September 10. Tehn came the Band Booster's Concert on November 12, the Mackinaw P.T,A, Meetingon December 3, the Pancake Supper, the Ham and Bean Supper, and the Tazewell County Festival held on February 13 at Morton. The band also played at other schools in March and April according to an exchange trade. All together the three Deemack bands performed at approximately 25 different times. Aside from this many members played in quartets, duets, trios, and solos. They did a little directing, too, so I think it can be concluded that the band members and director have kept quite active in this year 1956-57. MIXED CHORUS FIRST ROW: S. Weigand, M. McIntyre, R. For when Larry's occult-wise friend, Phil, with thebest of intentions, plans to put the recalcitrant new butler into a hypnotic tranceand inducehim to be a good butler, the Carrs should have been mightily pleased, but weren't. For Phil, by mistake, mesmerizes Mr. Dowd, the wealthy house guest qwho might be induced to merge his business with Mr. Carr's,J and has him going around beleiving he'd like to serve dinner, and rejoices in answering doorbells. 'I'he Dowds' sophisticated daughter, Mary Lou, thinks her dad is terribly ftmny in his new role, and induces Phil to convert her mother into a would-be cook: It would fit in so well with butler father . . . So Phil promptly does. There ensue some riotous scenes, with Mrs, Dowd getting underfoot in the kitchen, and Mr. Dowd, frying pan in hand, chasing Barlow through the living room. Meanwhile, J' ody's friend, Marilyn, dateless for the dance, is magically persuaded by Phil not to want to go to the dance. He's just trying to help out J' ody, who is frantically telephoning prospective escorts, Of course, when the blind date arrives and Marilyn calls him a jerk and refuses to go, you can imagine the consequences. Furious with Phil, the distraught Carrs hire a professional hypnotist, Lori, to undo the mischief, But she, too, confuses identities, and has Barlow the real butler, thinking he's a rich industrialist, and the real cook believing she's an aristocrat who winters in Honolulu. All of which leaves the Dowds still in their domestic roles, and the business merger no nearer completion. This unhappy situation is relieved only when Phil, certain this time who is which, in an unequalled mass hypnotic scene to end all scenes, turns the characters right side out again! . A. A. Illinois Power has to figure out now just how much power folks around here will be needing an hour from now, a year from now, and even ten years from now. We must have electricity available right when you need it. And since it takes quite a while to build a power plant, we have to plan way ahead for new homes, new appliances, and new businesses that maybe haven't even been thought of yet. On Friday evening, January 20, 1934, a large group of people assembled for the dedication of Lilly School as a Superior School. This was the second school in Tazewell County to be re- cognized as Superior, the other one being located between Pekin and East Peoria. At 8:30 on the morning of April 12, 1940, the Lilly School was burned to the ground. No one was injured, fortunately, although all children were in the school when the fire was discovered. Plans were immediately drawn up for a new school building. At the beginning of the 1940- 1941 school term, school was- held at Mt. Pleasant school. The teacher, Mrs. Marie Bostic and her pupils were able to convene school- in the new building on December 2, 1940. On July 20, 1948, a special meeting was called for the purpose of disolving the 'old school board, consisting of Carl Kull, Earl McLaughlin, and Earl Parmele. At this time Lilly School, District No. 269, became a part of the new Deer Creek-Mackinaw Unit, District 'No. 701. The present building, with all modern facilities, consists of a classroom, library, and dining room. Ole teacher and a janitor are employed. At the beginning of the 1951-1952 school term. the seventh and eighth grades were taken in the grade school at Mackinaw. The enrollment in the Lilly School this year is 27.
