50 History CLASS OF 1954 Dur1ng our flrst year 1n Deer Creek Grade School we had but SIX pup1ls ga1n1ng Robert Sm1th the second year mak1ng our total seven Mrs Clara Newlm taught us these two years We all played 1n the lst 4th grade school band In 1948 '49 Un1t H701 was formed Mary Ann Wurmnest com1ng from Reed School Sandra M1CkeHS from Chaffer School Frankl1n Hasty and L1ll1an Brown from Sc1ence I-I1ll and Glenn R1ngenbe1'ger from Danforth JO1l'1ed us These were the schools that were 1n tlns area George Bachman and Jud1th Bachman came to us from Peorla Our class totaled fourteen puplls Our enrollment d1d not change as we ga1ned Jud1th aus-er from Peor1a and lost Jud1th Bachman to a school 1n Ind1ana Mrs Edwardena Goransen p1loted us through thls th1rd year As we numbered twelve 1n the begmmng of our fourth year Helen McClanahan and Sharon Me1s1nger brought us back to fourteen In September we took a tr1p to our teacher's M1ss Opal I-Ie1n1ger garden to observe and draw garden splders 1n the1r orb net or webs Tust before Chrlstmas Sharon Me1s1nger moved to Pek1n James Reagan and Gary Crank then moved 111 to make It flfteen members 1n our class In tne sprung our class took a h1ke 1nto the country to study b1rds In the f1fth year of our educat1onal Journey the class had a total of f1fteen pup1ls Mrs Ann Adams was then the teacher The fmrst of March we had a farewell party for Sandra M1ckens who sa1d good bye and moved to Tremont and Gary Crank moved to McNabb On our S1Xth lap we w1th Joe Roach numbered fourteen pUP1lS Dur1ng the early part of the term we lost Jud1th Fauser who moved to Peor1a Dor1s Cottle mov1ng to Jol1et and .Toe Roach to Tennessee In November W1lma Bellman drlfted here from Congerv1lle Grade School Janmary called for a surpr1se b1rthday party for our teacher Mr George St1mel1ng Th1s year gave us our flrst departmental teachmg The f1rst of March Glenn Rlnkenberger moved to Gr1dley wh1le later James Reagan moved to Waslungton For our seventh year of educatxonal travel we numbered twelve pup1ls gaxnlng Sh1rley Logue from Spr1ngf1eld and Patsy Rob1nson from Morton Later Sh1evly Ketter1ngJo1ned us from Pek1n In the sprmg thrs class w1th the e1ghth grade class accompamed by our teacher Mrs Alta Hammer v1s1ted the Pek1n Courthouse By the tlme the next September had rolled around br1ng1ng our f1nal year Sh1rley Logue and Helen McClanahan left the group In the fall the enrollment stood at eleven e1ght g1rls and three boys Thxs sprlng our group accomparned by the pr1nc1pa1 Mr W1ll1am Spencer journeyed to New Salem State Park L111CO1P'S Tomb and the Tllznoxs State Cap1tol We m1ss the e classmates who are nc lonuer wlth us but wztl cur fa1thful eleven we stand f1rm Tc o lr teachers and adn 1n1st1-ators who have secr us through all ot r t als a1 d 1o'ys we g ve our gr teful ppre lat on To grade h ol me say gc od by 1 - . . The combined bands performed in the homecoming parade and Halloween parade. Several students from Deer Creek performed as solos and duets at the Christmas program.
