People; School life; Just snaps. What is school spirit? Perhaps it is everything connected with school life, the buildings and the cam- pus, the American Flag against a blue sky, the student council in session, a group planning an activ- ity, early morning buses bringing students to school, seniors lining up for commencement. Perhaps school spirit is all these things. Perhaps it also includes the love of these things, the spark that makes them go, the fun and fellowship, the challenge of class discussion, the desire to achieve, the hopes and the disappointments. School spirit is a thing to be felt, and seen,; to be cherished, to be enriched, caught, retained, and to be remembered. ADMINISTRATION Superintendent Superintendent of DCLA Public Schools, Mr. George K. Smith. ■ Superintendent’s Message The publication of this Annual marks the end of the second year for the DCLA School and students, patrons, teachers and school em- ployees have all cooperated to bring success to our school community. We feel that our school is one of the best and that goals must be set high enough to maintain that position but at the same time remember- ing that our ultimate goal is quality education for each student. This Annual will provide each of you an opportunity to look back at some future time and recall that you were a part of DCLA and that you helped promote its activities. K'. George K. Your high school days are not just days of preparation for future living, but for living now. Every worthwhile activity in which you engage contributes to your development, whether it be strictly academic, vocational, extra curricular, or social in nature. In a few weeks you will be starting on a new part of your journey through life. It will all be strange and new to you for a while. You see, up to now, you have lived in a protective society; however, now, things will be differ- ent. You are going to start on your own great adventure. It is an adventure that will indlude not only love and happiness, but also war and tragedy. To live in this world you will need faith, courage, and love. There are many things we would like to tell you; however, we believe some of the most important ideals of life are to be honest, to be ambitious, and above all, to be yourself. All through life you have been taught that honesty is the best policy. You will have to learn that all people are not just, and that all people are not true. You must be honest with yourself at all times. Look at yourself once in a while, and if you don't like what you see, correct it. Only when you are honest with yourself can you im- prove yourself. One of a person's greatest assets is to have ambition. Each day brings new knowledge and new opportunities of learning. Never lose your ambition for learning. Always be amibtious in your work. Don't be staisfied to do a job good, do it well. Set your goals in life high; then, develop your ambition so that you may reach these goals. Remember, the ambitious person is the one who not only seeks an opportunity, but makes his opportunity. Abraham Lincoln once said: You can't escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today. Your opportunities are unlimited if you accept the re- sponsibilities that are yours from day to day. Most important of all, be yourself. It is fine to listen to advice; but, filter it, and take only the good that comes through. If you believe in something, stick with it, fight for it, prove it. You must have the strength and courage to do what you know is right, even if all the rest are going with the gang. It is fine to receive money for your labors, but never let any man get a price tag on your soul. These ideals are not easy to live by. Life is not easy either. You may falter and stumble a few times on your journey, but pick yourself up, ask for God's help any forgiveness, and try again. Each one of you will be leaving D C L A with your hearts full of plans for the future. Some of you plan brillant professional careers, others have fond hopes of educating youth, while many look forward to careers in the business world. Also, there are those anxiously waiting for that sunny day in spring when love finds its mate. Success, honor, wealth, and love, may these dreams of yours all come true.
