Antlers Make State 2-A Finals The 1981 - 82 Deer Creek Boys Basketball team began their storybook on December 1 with a win over Crooked Oak. The Antlers reached a record of 9-1 before bowing to four of the next five opponents. They rebounded from those losses and began to peak at playoff time to gain a berth in the prestigious state tournament for the first time since 1976. After an eighteen point win over Beggs in the semi-final round, the boys faced Hominy and were defeated 50-42. Deer Creek finished with a 21-7 record with only one loss to a 2-A team and took home the state runner-up banner. Lady Antlers Have Successful Season Despite not reaching the goal of making it to the state tournament, the 1981-82 Lady Antlers had a very successful year. Starting the year off with a 6-2 record, the girls came back from Christmas break to begin the long road to playoffs. After the regular season was completed, the DC girls placed first in the district and third in Skyline Conference with a 14-10 record. During the season the girls made it to the finals of two tournaments, playing Dale in the OBU classic and Kingfisher in the Western Oklahoma Tournament. Although eliminated in regionals, the play of many individuals provided the team with strength and depth. Named to the All Conference team were Suzanne Rapp and Traci Wheeler, and chosen for honorable mention were Dawn Hubkey, Sydney Ringer and Darlene Stutte. As a result of the impressive season, the Lady Antlers have been invited to play in the Tournament of Champions at Del City next year, and are looking forward to an exciting season. This year's administration made many important advances for the school. ln january, construction began on the new high school facilities which will be ready for use during the 1982 - 83 term. The school also added new sports programs this year, including the varsity wrestling and 6th grade girls basketball teams. An effort to improve finances resulted in the hiring of Gene Davis, President of Wilshire Bank, as board treasurer. The administration also worked throughout the year with the county commissioner to speed up improvements on the community roads and bridges. The school board seeks to continually offer Deer Creek students the finest in educational opportunities.
