The house detective at the Hoekstra Hotel slapped the hotel guest on the back. You're Iohn Dyer, aren't you? he said. Yes, John replied, and you're . . . Iohn Reuben! I guess you know my wife, Ianet. nee Sackrison. What are you two doing in the metropolitan City? Reuben asked. Looking up old classmates, eh? You'll find a lot of 'em right here in the City. ltOh, yes, said Ianet delightedly. llVVe've seen quite a few of them already. Tom Swenson and Duane Long were the engineers on our train, and we drove out to the hotel in a Krumwiede Kab. uHoney, interrupted John, you're forgetting that we stopped and had a beer at Merliu's Beer Garden. lane Shanesy and Joanne Shubert waited on us. That's right. The Children had Pilkiugton Popsicles. By the way, John Reuben exclaimed, udid you know that Eugene Strout won $100,000 on Ruth Peterson's radio program? He guessed correctly that the bouncing women were Laverne Meifert and Helen Milstroh. I haven't heard that program since Doris Johnson was Miss IIush. HSpeaking of radio, let's turn it on. I always like to hear what Tom Ellertson has to say about the news llHe's certainly backing Roy Klinepier for President! I'm sorry, Reuben said, but I don't think the electricity is hooked up. You see, Iune Johnson and Dick Fillmore are redeeorating the hotel. Betty Brokke is doing that mural over in the lobby. Well, we,ll have to be going, said Mr. Dyer. We've got tickets to see Richard Halverson and Gladys Wandrie at the opera house. The Children are going to see that new Dick VVreisner-Iune Allyson picture, lDeephaven Dreamboat.' So long, Iohn.' tlLet's stop at the magazine counter, Janet said. Oh, look! Pat Bohl's on the cover of Life again. Yes, and here's Elvera Brink on the Police Gazette. XVell, let's get a Saturday Evening Post. Dick Stimson has another article in its about Mary Beggs. who raised her own basketball team, and Claire Holcomb, who is coaching the team. I guess Claire must have quit'Milton Tweed's Physical Culture Show. uHere's the Mickey Anderson Memorial Theatre that was designed by David Lee. IIop out, kiddies. Iolm, before we go to the opera, let's run out and see the Iim Larson estate. All right. And at the same time we can st0p at Daniels' Nursery. Danny's a big nursery man now. So's Pete Kizer. He's an obstetrician at the IVIargc Stone Clinic. Bang! Darn it, there's a flat tire. XVe'll have to call up XVahl and Sumpter and have them come out and get the car. XVhile we're waiting, let's go into this Iim Schmid Drug Store; they're always so nice. XVell, Shirley Rapley, imagine meeting you here! ' Janet! Iohn! How are you? Just fine, Shirl; my, that's a darling hat you have on. nVVhy, thank you. it's a loan Sullivan original. I got it at the Dulcie and Audrey Shoppe on Fifth Avenue. XVell, goodbye. Shirley. XVe've got to dash to the Opera. LATER Oh, oh, the Opera's been canceled, and they've got the Dahlbloom Ballet instwd. It says all his costumes are designed especially for him by Kathleen Chambers. There's Arvid nowain a solo spotlight. Doesn't he dance divinely? I540
