In the Crystal Ball . . . As we enter the main gate of the Tingling Bros. Circus in the year I960. whom do we see but Pat Jensen. the balloon man? Look! There's some excitement over by Ruth Peter's Carameled Apple stand where Sylvester. one of Su Finley's ten children. is swiping a carameled apple. Oh! Oh! Here comes Kitty Wirtz. the policewoman. who chases Sylvester through the midway. Look out! Oops. too lateehe already ran into Madame Carol Rink. the mystic tor- tune teller. who has just finished telling a fortune. With the policewoman still on his trail. he passes Bobo Johnson's stand. where Bobo is madly setting up milk bottles. while Alvera La- gerquist. pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers. is running him out of business. Poor Bobo is al- most in tears. Now we find our little problem child sneaking past Mary Lou Mergens. ticket seller to the freak show. Entering the tent. he sees Gerry Sumpter about to swallow a glitter- ing two-toot sword. He also sees Evelyn Wetzig displaying her numerous tattoos. When he passes Mildred Strachota. the bearded lady, he cannot resist the temptation to give the beard a jerk. As he scurries along. he becomes interested in the headless woman. who in real- ity is Jane Martin. The policewoman. still in pursuit of Sylvester. hears trom Jerry Farmer. the Circus clown. that the little boy has dashed into the main tent. There we see Zoe Comer. the bareback rider. performing in the middle ring. To the right we see the fearless Don Kinney matching wits with eight ferocious lions: to our left is Dick Lee, trapeze artist. performing at the great height of five feet. The trumpets announce the one and only human cannon ball. Fern Dahlbloom. Above the noise of the crowd, rises the voice of Jo Finley- Peanuts. pop- corn. cracker jacks. chewing gum! We leave the Big Top and we see Sylvester annoying the elephant keeper. Cynthia Broste. Following him to the midway. we see him sneak onto the ferris wheel: but just in time Don Thompson. the operator. grabs him by the collar and throws him out. As he picks himself up. he hears the voice of the side show barker, Joan John- son, inviting the crowd to see the famous hula-hula dancer. Joyce Wiest. who is about to go into her third act. Next our pursuit leads us into the Fun House where we see Calvin John- son. the air blower. earning his living the hard way iHeh. hehlll. Back at the midway he is fascinated by the Merry-Go-Around. While we stop to watch it. whom do we see but Lois Hansen. mounted on a white charger going up and down and round and round! But wait! There goes Sylvester into the beer parlor where he hides from the policewoman. who is still on his trail. Out of curiosity we follow Sylvester into the establishment. There we see Bev Wen- dling slinging sott l?i drinks at the bar while Dorothy Hartman lalias 88 keys l beats out the latest hits on the piano. We see the bouncer. Jim Moe. approaching-Whissshhh! Later. Barb Sorvig. ticket seller at the Tunnel of Love. informs us that the policewoman caught the little boy and took him to the manager. Don Nordseth. We arrive to find the two giving Syl- vester the third degree. What did you do with that carameled apple? shouts the manager eBoom! Crash! Splinter. Oouch! Don't be alarmed! It's only the stunt driver. Dave Froyd. tak- ing the wrong turn after going through a hoop of tire. During the excitement. Sylvester slips away and dashes out the exit with us following him. E343
