C. T N E D N E T m R E P U S Dedication . . . Mr. Peterson attended Gustavus Adolphus College. graduating in l9l I. and he proceeded to the University of Minnesota for his post-graduate work. He came to Deephaven in l9l9 to help establish the newly erected building with its l7 pupils in the high school. Besides being a capable superintendent he has acted as coach and has done a grand job of filling in during the illness of any teacher. Mr. Peterson's son and daughter have both been two very outstanding stu- dents in Deephaven and have gone on to show Deephaven's good name at the University of Minnesota. Besides his many school activities. Mr. Peterson has one of the most out- standing gardens in the community-just name a flower and he can tell you all of its habits and culture. As chief administrator of Deephaven Mr. Peterson has had to shoulder the responsibility of partially controlling the lives of hundreds of boys and girls each year. To this position he has brought the required amount of firmness tempered by a sense of humor and a sympathetic approach to the student problems. The student body and faculty sincerely appreciate the work he has done in his 28 years as superintendent. Mr. Peterson. you have been superintendent at Deephaven for 28 years. and we are proud of you. You have established a school that is a credit to you and the community. We admire you for your good sense of humor and complete fairness in dealing in student problems. We have had so many happy moments in the classrooms. and we have thoroughly enjoyed the varied auditorium pro- grams you arranged. You have been one of the staunchest supporters of our ath- letic teams. and the support is one of the reasons for their great success. When we return to Deephaven in the coming years. we shall be more conscious of your good work. It was 'Senior Skip Dayt'l As the underclassmen stood in a complete daze. the seniors piled into cars and headed tor Taylors Falls. Everyone they passed certainly could tell it was some kind of celebration. and the Deephaven kids really celebrated. Atter Climbing every bank and peeking into every cave and cubby hole. the kids settled down to a grand picnic lunch right on the edge ot the St. Croix. There were a lot of new faces among the thirty-tive classmates because of the tact that a large group came from Groveland. About the only great accomplishment was the tact that we were freshmen: however. the girls outdid themselves giving the faculty and Board of Education a dinner. and the chorus gave the operetta. The Outlaw King. In the tail of I944 we came back tor another year with only thirty in our class. We had a class sleigh ride which ended with a lot of black and blue marks. A few of our musical talents were in the operetta. Sunbonnet Girl. Mrs. Fowler put up with us for our sophomore year as home room teacher. As juniors we gave six dances starting with the Sept. Step and ending with the Blossom Time Ball. which we established as traditional. and the for. which we gave at the Columbia Heights Chalet. The chorus gave the operetta. Hollywood Bound. with Jo Finley as the lead. We mal Junior-Senior Prom.' cheered our exceptional basketball team on as they took the Valley Conterence title. district title. and went on to place second in the regional. During the last weeks of school we watched the excavations of the ground tor the new addi- tion with interest. The climax of our high school days was being seniors. When we came back after Christmas vacation. the new addition was finished and the crowded con- ditions were relieved. We struggled through the publication of the annual which was really a lot of tun. Senior skip day left one of the tondest memories with us. Bitter-sweet Anne was the operetta given by the chorus. In the way of act- ing. our class put on the annual senior class play. Ot course. the most important event of the year was graduation. During the year we went through all the usual worry of ordering graduation pictures. cards. and announcements; and on May 3! we took our final march to the stage and received those long-awaited di- plomas. E261 Chorus and Band Under the supervision of Mr. Irving Gordon. 6 new member of the faculty this year. both Chorus and band have shown steady progress. The Chorus has many achievements to their credit this year. They participated in the annual Christ- mas program. entertained the P.T.A.. and presented the Operetta, Bitter Sweet Annel which is a two- act comedy. The officers of the chorus are: president. Jane Martin: vice president, Zoe Comer: secre- tary-treasurer. Beverley Wendling. Mr. Gordon not only directs the band but also gives individual lessons to the members. They gave a band concert in April: they played for peptests and many basketball games both here and at other schools. The band officers are: president. Jeanne Ellertson: vice president. Mary Fraser: secretary. Jean Penney: treasurer. Betty Barnes. The band grew this year. not only in membership, but also in ability. Just prior to the annual spring concert they received their very handsome new uniformsemaroon trousers with a gold stripe down the legs and gold battle jackets with maroon shoulder braid and oversea caps to match. In the future the band will be not only a fine sounding organization but also a fine looking one. ROW l: R. Wrcisncr. D. Milstroh 0.0 Bickford J. Holden F Bcrquist M. Wandrci D. MacCallum B. chdling. There's some excitement over by Ruth Peter's Carameled Apple stand where Sylvester. one of Su Finley's ten children. is swiping a carameled apple. Oh! Oh! E343 ATHLETIES WA I, ; g6 OEEPHAVfN - WM Since his arrival in I945. Mr. Earl Christ has won the respect and admiration of the student body and the community. At the pep-tests. we all have enjoyed his intormal talks. and especially his jokes and stories. We also have admired his outward calmness during the games. with nary a fist shaken at the referee, disputing a decision. Yes. Coach Christ is concluding his second year ot directing Deephaven athletics with many tine records. Under his leadership. the basketball team has copped its third straight Valley Conference championship. However, Mr. Christ has not confined his abili- ties to the school semester alone. Last summer he arranged a recreation program that really brought grand results. Besides maintaining five swimming beaches with their individual guards. he gave swimming lessons to children of all ages. He had several baseball teams and arranged tOr horseshoe tournaments. tennis matches. volleyball, and other sports for the grown-ups. In all. the en- tire project was a great success. E363 DICK LEE: Dick. a boy that any coach likes to have and hates to lose. has been a tine leader and one of the outstanding athletes in Deephaven his- tory. WALLY VAN GUILDER: Wally came a long way this year in both football and basketball. He is a hard worker who likes to play the game for all it's worth. DAVE FROYD: Up until the time ot his injury in football, Dave was really outstanding. I wish we'd have him another year. so that he could show his wares. JIM MOE: Jim was a steady player on both of- tense and defense. DON THOMPSON: Don used his size to advan- tage this year and did some outstanding work at tackle. HARRY HOLCOMB: Harry. our sophomore prize. should go a long way in athletics. MlLT TWEED: XVe used Milt mostly in defense. but he did his job and did it well. We're looking tor- warcl to next year. JIM LARSON: Jim was ready when we needed him. and he filled in very nicely when Dave was injured. PETE KIZER: Pete. for his size. played some bang-up ball for us at end. JlM SCHMlD: For the first year of calling signals off the T Jim did a very good job. In basketball he had a big job to till and did this in great style. JOHNNY REUBEN: Ruggedness is the word for Johnny. in both football and basketball. ARVIE DAHLBLOOM: Although Arvie played end for us in football, he really came into his own in basketball. DICK FlLLMORE: Dick started out on the B team in basketball and ended up on the first tive. We are looking torward to next year with Dick. GEORGE PlLKINGTON: George. along with Johnny. has done some good work for us as replace- ments in basketball. and next year should be a big one tor both of them. GEORGE HOEKSTRA: Hoek in his First year of football played a bang-up game at center. He is coming along fast in basketball. too. So to the seniors.
