For us this was the first day of what we thought would be the longest four years of our lives. As freshmen, we were told that these years would be our best years and that they would be gone before we knew it. Al- though most of us doubted this, we found out soon enough that it was true. Senior year had approached us quicker than we had ever ex- pected. This was the time we had all been waiting for. At last- Senior Year! We started planning for the Semi- formal, Bermuda, the prom, senior play, yearbook portraits, and most of all, graduation. When the time came to be measured for caps and gowns, we all finally realized that we really were graduating. For some it was a happy time leaving the high school but for most it was a sad time of seeing people for the last time. But it is now the time to say good- bye and face the future remember- ing the good times that Dedham High has given us. --S ' 1 ll p 1 SEPIEQR. And all the good times we had in High School. 5 arying styles at Deham High School reflect the wide ranges of in- dividuality that exist in the Class of H8311 Obviously the most original style is that of the Trackies. The Trackie look combines a unique idea of fashion to suit the personality of the wearer. Whether its flourescent sneakers, moccasins, or barefeet, Ya- shikie shirts and faded dungarees, the trackies take pride in their ad- verse style. Preppy has been a style for many of the seniors for the past two years. According to a true prep, the ideal outfit for both a young woman and man includes the oxford, the izod alligator sweater, chinos and docksiders. x U. x, 1 The Creative Style is exactly what the name states. The creative dresser incorporates jfxkf not only the latest in fashionable wear but also the styles of ycserday W The latest in fashion trends is New Wave. The attire includes mini- skirts, silk pants and the tradition- alman's tie. Stripes are predominant in the clothes along with bright col- ors. The Punk trend is one that has spread quite rapidly through the halls of the high school in the past year. The punk wear consists of darker colored clothing, primarily black, and includes leather pants and unusual footwear. The T-shirt look of Dedham High reflects the casual and relaxed atti- tudes of many Dedham High stu- dents. Along with the concert tees, the students wear Levi's and work- boots. Although each of these styles are represenative of Dedham Hgh School, the look that best represents a D.H.S. student is the one that best represents his or her personality and the things he enjoys. i . 1 t X ls. The jobs involved more effort than they were sometimes worth. We all have to admit that though we needed the money, the jobs have caused us to miss out on some things. For instance, senior year rolled around rather quickly. As this time came, we all hoped to have fun and join in on activities during our last year in high school. But for many, the jobs resulted in missed opportunities. We found ourselves saying many times: Sorry, I can't go because I have to work tonight -maybe next time. And to top if off, a lot of us had to wear uniforms and hats usually made out of polyester. Name tags were usually included too. Smile and be polite to the customer! , always seemed to echo from our employers. But in due time this paid off! After all, how else would we have been able to enjoy that sun in Bermuda or pay for our many senior year expenses? -.-J-.-J-,-,.e-.-.p -- - . .,.. .,.J.x . .,. By the time the 2:10 dismissal bell rings Friday after- noon the halls are buzzing with sensa- tional plans for excitement! If there happens to be a house party around town, everyone usually finds out about it, but if not there is a range of other places we can be found. Using imagination a variety of activi- ties can be uncovered around the town. Whether your idea of fun is cheering on the sports teams, seeing a movie, dancing the night away, or just being with friends it doesn't matter as long as it's entertaining. Nevertheless, a ven- ture to McDonalds, Tahiti or other lo- cal restaurants can top off the night. Yes, weekends do pass quickly! Along with the heavy social schedule, week- ends are also a time to engage in obliga- tions that should be fulfilled. This time can be used for catching up on such educational endeavors as papers to be written and books to be read by their close upcoming deadlines. Also there are those students with jobs who may have to give up some of their weekend privileges to make money for the future. In general, weekends are made for us with the freedom to choose what we want to do with them. Surely everyone has a good amount of memories of the many weekends throughout their high school years! The average in Dedham was 419 in 1982 as compared to 407 in 1981. Math scores have maintained themselves with a mean score of 454. However, studies show Dedham students still scored slightly lower than the national average which was 426. Coffey said, Prior to 1981 the number of students who took the SAT's each year was fairly static, but in 1982 32 fewer girls took the SATS Coffey said, Prior to 1981 the number of students who took the SATS each year was fairly static, but in 1982 32 fewer girls took the SAT's. Coffey added that the mean verbal score for girls went up significantly. In 1981 the girls mean score was 396. This year's verbal score is 420, a dramatic 24 point rise. Coffey credits the rise to some changes that have taken place in the English program. Principal Peter Smith attributes the sudden rise in scores to the revamping of the English program during the last few years which placed a greater emphasis on vocabulary and grammar. ln addition, Smith cites the once offered College Board Review courses as a possible factor effecting scores. The course, he said spent time going over old SAT tests and emphasized vocabulary, work analogies and reading for understanding. Smith went on to point out that the course was dis- continued during day school but is now offered through the night school program. Smith said, W'e are finally starting to see results ofthe time and effort expended on the revisions in the English program. Coffey suggests that the students who are planning to take the SATS to work with their English and mathematics teacher and take the College Board Review course that is offered at night school. as , 41.1 . gifs la nf gl. his li E vi. The Dedham Chamber of Commerce chose Shad to be the Town's contestant. Twenty- one Chambers of Commerce throughout Mass. and New Hampshire chose one person from their town to enter in this contest. Shad was awarded a plaque at an Awards Banquet held on August 4th at the Marriott Long Wharf Hotel. Thisgis not the first award Shad has received. St. Nlary's CYD. honored him on ,lune 5th with a plaque for being an outstanding person in Dedham. Also. during the Craduatioin Cla:-s Ceremonies of 1970, the School Vommittee presented Shad with a plaque for his many yehrs of service to the School. For twenty-three years Shad has enioved working for DH T .S Shad Araby Applauded But, being a custodian at D.H.S. was not his only job. He graduated from D.H.S. in 1942 during the Big One---WW11. At eighteen years of age, Shad joined the Navy for four years. He was a storekeeper in charge of supplies on a Naval destroyer. He also worked as a manager in the First National Grocery Store. From 19401959 he was the Clubhouse Manager in charge of the equipment for the Red Sox at Fenway Park., ln High School, Shad participated on the basketball team and was the waterboy for the DHS football team. He received the nickname of Shad in his sophomore year. He was caught frequently singing the Shadrack. and the football players would call him Shad Wlly they needed water. So. the name caught on and is still used at DHS today. One person Shad most admires is Mr. Donald Seager head of the DHS Athletic Department. Mr Se. 'er is an D. . unbelievable guy, stated Shad. The happiest and most memorable event that has happened to Shad at DHS was when the School Committee interrupted the Craduation Ceremonies of 1976 to award him a plaque for his years of service. The most traumatic thing that has ever happened to Shad at DHS was the sudden death of Mr. Bell. He reflects. 1 talked to him only two hours before he died. A -1 The Class of 1983 would like to thank Mrs. Bradley, our class advisor, for making our four years at Dedham High a wonder- ful and rewarding experience. Through her efforts the entire class became more active and involved as they participated in a variety of activities from fund raisers to prom committees. Mrs. Bradley put all her time and creative thinking into our class to make it the best possible four years we could ever have. We wish to applaud Mr. Dellorco and Mr. Morneau for making our junior prom an overwhelming success by singing our prom theme Turn The Page . This made the night very special for us and will always be etched in our memories. We would also like to thank Mr. Palmer, our play director, for all the effort expended on Oklahoma , our senior school play. And at last, but not least, a nice warm thanks to Mr. Farring- ton, our yearbook adviser who made our 1983 yearbook the greatest. 158 1- 128 i L .4-FW C17 L M - 1 XX ig. Rx 'T xi fx.
