After receiving ideas from the student body, they do research on them and then put them into formal proposals to submit to the School Committee for approval. This year the S.S.C. succeeded in adopting an after school student tutoring program and an alternative to the uquiet- study for seniors. The committee members are: Advisor Maryanne Placentino, Maureen Conley Cchair- personj, Ann Dever, Michele Tier- nan, Carole Gentile, Jennifer McDon- ald, Sara Mulrooney, and Barbara Findlen imissing from photoi. - is Q HT7-1, The Student Leadership Orientation Program KSLOPJ is a relatively new program at Dedham High School. This program was introduced two years ago to aid incoming freshmen in adjusting to the High School. SLOP was initiated on a one year trial basis. At the end ofthe year, the program was unanimously voted in by the School Committee and is now a permanent program at the High School. The concept ofSLOP is that upperclassmen can help freshmen in getting used to their new environ- ment at the school. There were five groups this year, each with approximately ten freshmen assigned to two student leaders. These student leaders had to go through a ten week training course in the spring so that they could completely handle most situations that would arise during the meetings with the freshmen in the fall. Mrs. Marianne Placentino and Mrs. Carole For- tune were the faculty advisors that organized the leaders and held the training sessions. A pamphlet designed by SLOP was given to all ofthe freshmen on the first day of school. This was full of helpful hints informing the freshmen about the various activities at DHS. The program ends in Mid janu- ary when both the leaders and freshmen feel that it had served its purpose. 1. lst row fl to rl: Carole Murphy, Carole Gentile, Linda Brauer, and Cheri Cabana. 2nd row Cl to rj: Gail Cuzelian, Michele Tieman, Mrs. Marianne Placentino fadvisorl, Cindy Cimeno, and Susan Connelly. 1.10 4 l. A peer tutoring program and n alternative study hall are the vo ideas presented by the Audent School Committee on Jeoember 15. 1981. 1' Student tutoring will involve 'fucully-supervised after-school ession in which freshmen and Uphomores may seek extra udemic help from upper- ilassmen. SSC faculty advisor AH. Maryanne Placentino says that lhe idea is based on the :vrinciple that students can often 'ielp other students more than a encher' uv- WQ are .realizing l. ,L 4 I that we have a whole source of learning that wc're not using. This may open a new avenue of students helping other students. The tutors will be junior and senior Honors students and National Honor Society members. Any freshman or sophomore who wants extra help in math or English may report to A210 after school. Help in math will be given on Wednesdays, English on Thursdays. During the help session, a student may work on an individual basis with a tutor, orgroup sessions may be organized. SSC members stress the fact that peer tutoring is an option for those who want to try it, and will never be mandatory or assigned. In their proposal to the School Committee, the SSC pointed out lhal the rationale behind the program was that students are often more likely lo be responsive to peers in an informal setting, and that a student tutor may be able to explain a subject in terms understandable lo another student. Furthermore, the SSC maintains, material will be reinforced K0 the tutor, and therefore help those who teach to learn. Evidence that underclassmen wanted academic help from other students was found in a survey done two years ago by the Student Leadership and Orientation Program. The SSC Continued on page 3 what you want for courses. A major variation between Lebanese and American schools is that in Lebanon everyone's education has a price lag. You pay from your pocket, not your taxes, Mona says. In addition. students are allowed In drop out an any time. There are similarities. though. The Ieng1h ofthe school day is about the same in Lebanon as il is here, and mos! people attend college. One side of American school that Mona is happy to leave behind is the way kids smoke and lake drugs. They don't smoke in school in lebanon and do the stuff they do here. Why not? l don'l know. Maybe because the people in lgbanon are more together than the people here. Lebanon's attraction for Mona lies mainly in its people and the relaxed atmosphere. You can do what you want. Over here you have to call to go over some0ne's house. Over there you just go. The importance of this difference to Mona may in part be a result of the small town closeness that she is accustomed to. Life for her in Lebanon is more open. They all look after each other. In fact, the first thing Mona plans to do once she is in Izbanon is visit my friends. Mona's hobbies are sewmg, baking and, by far her favorite, gardening. We have a garden and a lol of fruit trees. I go sometimes and just sit down there. We have pear trees, apple trees, plum trees, and we have grape vines. Mona particularly misses gardening while living in Dedham. Outside there is no place to work. Being a gardener, Mona is interested in her environment. ln Lebanon, There is fresh air. 'nie weather is different. It doesn't freeze, there is no ice here, As for America, either il is too cold or its too hot. However, Lebanon and America are similar in some ways. 'Television programs are lund of lhe same. The movies you see here, we seein Lebanon. lehanese people wear the same type of clothing as Americans do, according to Mona. ln Lebanon she and her friends play games like Monopoly and basketball. As for music, We have American music and we have Lebanese music with different language and A different style. I like them both.
