The team worked hard from the heat of August to the November freeze under the leadership of Head Coach Don Seag- er, Backfield Coach Gerry Varnum, and Line Coach Jim Davis, but they only coordinated themselves on four Saturday performances. They started the campaign with a trouncing of Needham and then waited several games before shutting out Braintree and Milton soon after. Turkey Day almost did not come for the team, when an early snow storm blanketed the field, but the entire school helped shovel and the game required only postponement. The seniors then thanked their class- mates by finishing their high school careers in glory, running over rival Norwood for the first time in the last three seasons in this year's Saturday Thanksgiving Day classic. Their 4-5-O record was the best in their three years of varsity competition. 4. At all times, one could see a track star from Dedham running the streets and sidewalks in preparation for the next meet or maybe iust condition- ing. Coaches Bob Healey and Jan Castanza simply captured this natural desire and developed it into a highly competitive squad. The Cross-Country team fin- ished high in the standings with a 7-2-O record, while next year's varsity fthe JV'sl captured the crown with a 9-O-O record. Winter track made a very fine showing finishing fifth in the very tough Bay State League, and finishing in third place in the Metropolitan League with a 5-2-O slate. The Marauder Track seniors should be proud of their efforts. They showed that hard work and perseverance produce great results. CAPTAIN TOM KELLEY OH li i 3 1 , X 1 x ff: f . Going to wrestling camp during the summer months and working hard during the fall brought exciting results to Coach Jim Police's men. They ran up an undefeated streak over the first half of their schedule, wiping every oppo- nent clear off the mat. The end was not so sweet as the beginning, however, and the grapplers dropped a few tough matches. Like all true Marauders, the grapplers refused to quit and made this season their best in the short existence of Dedham wrestling. Thislcry rang through the gyms around the league and no louder than in our own court as the 1971-72 Marauder hoopsters finished a season never before experienced by a winter sport team from the Shiretown school. From the time the final whistle blew in the 1970-71 season, this ball club played and played and played with the hopes that maybe they could erase the dreadful years of Dedham basketball from their blood. Under the leadership of Coach Jim Calhoun the Marauders began to win. Cal- houn had turned around the entire attitude of the players, the students, and the whole town. Winning was the whole game, and win they did. 12-0 gave them the first tournament birth in eight years, 14-O gave them the first winter sports championship since the es- tablishment of the league, and 18-O rewarded Dedham High with only the second undefeated season in the Bay State League history.
