1982 Eagle Star Deckerville Community Schools 2633 Black River Street Deckerville, Michigan 48427 Board of Education Left to right: Ralph Moeller, Trustee; David Lee, Treasurer; Dorothy Sanford, Secretary; Arnold McVittie, President; Alexander Galligan, Superintendent; Gerald Geiger, Vice-President; Blaine Kertoyson, Trustee; Gerald Keinath, Trustee. Dedication Contents The 1982 EAGLE STAR is dedicated to the vol- unteer groups who have given so freely to pro- vide some of the extras which had to be cut from the curriculum in this very lean year, finan- cially, for Michigan schools. The Athletic Boosters and the Band Boosters, as well as individuals who voluntarily sponsored extra-curricular activi- ties, are hereby commended for their service to Deckerville students. Acknowledgements Members of the 1982 EAGLE STAR staff wish to gratefully acknowledge the contributions of others who have been helpful in producing this yearbook. Julius the Photographer, Sundusky, photo- graphed without charge all of the group and class pictures, and also provided all of the film, developing and enlargement, for almost all of the candids which appear in this book. Without this valuable assistance we could not have pre- sented such a picture-filled book. We indeed thank him for all he has done for us. We also wish to acknowledge all of the help Mrs. Ila Salowitz and Mrs. Judy Bowerman have given us. They have taken time, between all of the other duties they perform as Elementary and High School Office Secretaries, to help with our subscription drive, and to identify all of the stu- dents for the class pictures. We thank them for these and the myriad of other helpful things they have done for us. Many other school personnel have assisted us, and while there is not space to name everyone here, we want them to know that their efforts are much appreciated. 2 Board of Education 1 Senior Section 3 Junior Section 21 Sophomore Section 27 Freshmen Section 33 Junior High Section 39 High School Administration and Faculty 49 Sports 57 Organizations 75 '82 in Review 87 Elementary Section 99 Index 124 Advertising 126 4 Vera Beadle Jeffery Beaver Keith Berger Paul Doerr Fawn Fivecoat Stephen Foster Timothy Hooper Marc Inbody Christie Innes Honor Student 6 Hiroyuki Kakuta )oseph Janicki Eric Klaus Frank Ledezma Richard Ledezma Connie Leibinger Ralph Lentner Steve McConnachie Donald McFarlane Fabio Marinho Michelle Maxfield Charles Medcoff Honor Student Karen Murdock Lena Mustard Honor Student Max Nagey lanene Pardy Brian Paterson Natalie Peruski S-----------------------V, S ■—r Sherry Peters Honor Student J------------------------V, Maureen Rich S___________________________r Lynn Reinelt J S____________r Barry Roe S____________________ Jeffery Rich J-------------------------V, Christopher Roth Honor Student 10 Lori Roth Michael Schenck Mark Schmitt Diane Sims x— Melanie Smigill Honor Student J V -- Bettina Soerensen 12 Kevin Vanderlip Kevin Vogel Honor Student Peggy Wadsworth Class Officers Sharon Kunze, Treasurer; Lena Mustard, Secretary; Christie Innes, President; Chris Stolicker, Vice- President. 13 Good afternoon Board Members, Faculty and Administration, families, friends, parents, and especially my fellow classmates of the graduatins class of 1982. 71 It's been a long wait seniors, but today our graduation day finally catches up with us. In a moment we will receive our ticket to society and in doing so, leave behind us an important era of our lives. An era in which we were most impressionable to the shaping of society. An era in which we set the levels of our own ambitions and priorities. Thus, for many of us the mold is set. Those of us who accept and live today with responsibility and maturity will in essence maintain the same values and character throughout our entire lives. This is why our high school years have been so important. It has been a sort of halfway-house in which we began to make responsible decisions for ourselves and our future. Yet we were allowed to make mistakes; allowed to grow in a sheltered environment. But today we say goodbye to this era of our lives. No longer will we be working together as a group, but must survive in society as an individual. The days of doing school work together and playing on the same team are over. It is not |ust graduation that will divide us, but a difference in beliefs, morals, values, and character. In the future, not only may we not play on the same team, but may become bitter oppo- nents. By the making of our own responsible decisions and the will of God will this be done and our future and the future of the world be shaped. It is this realization that we, now as adults, must come to accept. Each of us should now enjoy each others company as the class of 1982, while we still share a common ground. Let us leave today, if with nothing else, the ability to learn. As valedictorian, I can tell you that during my twelve years at DeckerviKe Com- munity Schools, I have learned some things that I will never use and, because of availability, have not had the opportunity to learn some things I could have used in my future endeavors. However, I have gamed the ability to learn; the learning process in which I will continue to use for the rest of my We. At D.H.S. our class has been given a general background in which we have been able to evaluate our strengths and weaknesses, and have been able to make a decision about our individual careers accordingly. Some of us will go on to further our education Some will wish to settle into agriculture. Others will seek opportunities in some part of the job market; but no matter what we do we will all use the learning skills we have acquired these twelve years at D.H.S. throughout our lives. ■A th« time .o tetalf of the graduating class of 1982, I wish to do two things. One, to thank the Board of Education, Administration, and Faculty for their guidance and instillment of the educational process; parents for their love and support; and everyone here for showing their honor and recognition to us for this great achievement; and secondly, to bid you farewell. On behalf of myself and the rest of the graduating class of 1982, I would like to welcome everyone here to share in this beginning. I would also like to express a sincere thank-you to those here and to those who couldn't be present today for sharing in our growth, and helping us become what we are today. Graduation is much more than an end to something, it is the beginning. This is the time we set our goals, and in trying to reach them, let them shape our lives. Our motto expresses this thought very well. Far away, there in the sunshine, are my highest aspirations. I may not reach them, but I can look up and see their beauty, believe in them, and try to follow where they lead. I hope that for each of us, the goals we set now will lead us to much success and happiness. Leaving Deckerville Community Schools now at the end of thirteen years of learning, we leave behind us the teachers, the classrooms that hold so many of our memories, and in many cases we leave our friends to go our own separate ways in life. This sounds like it should be a sad time, but it isn't. We may be leaving a lot of things and people behind us, but we are going towards something greater. We are taking with us the things we have been taught while in school and not all of these lessons have come from a book. The actions of others teach us a S?at deal. We are ready, and at this point eager, to put these lessons to good use. There are so many things we have yet to experience. aduation is just the beginning of a lifetime of new experiences that we are all looking forward to even though the prospect of relying on our own abilities to create a future of our own is a bit frightening. As we get older and have found our places in society, we will all look back on our years in high school. Hopefully when we do look back, fond memories will come to us of the things we did, the friends we had, and the things we learned during our high school years. Once again I would like to welcome everyone and thank-you for the support we have received throughout our years. 1982 WAS INTERNATIONAL YEAR 8 YFU STUDENTS JOINED OUR SENIOR CLASS Bettina is from Esbjerg, Denmark. However, parents sponsored float building for the homecoming, and Mrs. Kar- in Russell served voluntarily as junior Class Spon- sor. Despite the hardships this year presented, the Juniors put on a traditional Prom, and held many fundraisers in hopes that a Senior trip may be possible next year. Band Director and Booster Treasurer, presents his report; Boosters Secretary, Jeannette Kursinsky reads minutes; And some of the members are shown discussing new fund-raising ideas. Booster groups have a long history of providing extras at D.C.S., but this year they took on the sup- port of much of the basic program for both band and athletics. Due to our millage vote failure and State funding cuts, Band was reduced to class-room-only ac- tivity at the beginning of the year; and only Varsity sports were funded. Later State cuts forced the elimi- nation of any funding for winter and spring intermural sports. In addition to fund raising and giving of pledges some parents also donated their time to do such things as wash uniforms and providing transportation to special events. Athletic Boosters faced steep challenge. Mr. and Mrs. George Wagester, both officers of the Athletic Boosters, put in endless hours of work to make the organization go this year. The Athletic Boosters raised over $10,000 this year to pay for transportation, coaches (small) salaries, uniforms and other expenses of the winter and spring Varsity and Junior Varsity sports programs. Mr. David Messing coached Junior High basketball without charge. Staff lay-offs Caused Severe Cuts in the Quality of Education at Deckerville The 1981-82 school year at Deckerville was one of transition. The program went from a fairly complete one to a very austere one. Seven secondary and four elementary teachers were pink slipped, one cook was laid off and a custodian was not replaced. Textbooks were not updated, funds for teaching supplies were reduced, foreign language was dropped, the school library was open for only a half day, guidance and counseling were reduced and extra class activities were not school supported. The school lost its North Central ac- creditation. The program reductions were due to numerous factors. The State economy was in poor condition. There were massive lay offs in the automobile industry, unemployment in the State reached the highest percentage of the 50 states and interest rates remained high. Coupled with the above, members of our farming community experienced crop losses in the fall due to large amounts of rain. As a result, the District lost two close millage elections —in )une, 1981, by 51 votes and in August by 43. The result was reductions in the school pro- gram. The year could have been an unsettling one with student unrest, vandalism, and a general let down attitude. This was not the case. Students and other members of the school community held up magnificiently. Music patrons raised funds to support the music program. Athletic boosters supported the athletic program. Students responded by participating in the programs offered. The girls basketball team advanced to tne Class D quarter finals. The boys football team won the NCTL Championship and advanced to the state playoffs. Nu- merous community volunteers helped with our elementary tutoring and library programs, athletic teams, transportation, yearbook, and National Honor Society. The 1981-82 school year was a hard one for Deckerville student's programs as well as other student's programs around the state. However, when the economy gets rejuvenated, this too will pass and our students will again enjoy the good educational program to which they are entitled. 7 But We Did Get Through it, And... D.H.S. important role in our elementary School The Bucket Brigade, a volunteer tutoring program for first graders, has been in existance at D.C.S. for seven years. Mrs. Virginia Drum, who had been Bucket Coordinator for the past two years, moved from the area in February. Mrs. Sandi Avery, shown at left helping |oey Collins master subtraction, agreed to coordinate the program for the remainder of the year. Those who tutored this year are: Gail Wyatt, Shirley Collins, Shirley Russell, Mary Parrott, Estelle Grice and Bob Bartholomew. The only reward Bucket Brigade volunteers receive is the satisfac- tion of knowing their effort has helped a student over a rough spot in his or her school exper- ience. First grade teachers have high praise for the assistance the volunteers give them. Bob Bartholomew, still in High School, finds time to tutor. Here he is with one of his favorite tutorees , Mike Warczinsky. Consternation and concentration turn to...... Regulars in 1981-82 were Nina Green, Carol Galligan, Arlene Schmidt, lanet Gough, Nancy Mino, Helen Wilson, Sharon Salowitz and Mary Shanks. Substitutes were Mary Lou Gibbs, Lucille Setter, Karen Reinelt and Janet O'Keefe. 122 Elementary Academic Awards Assembly John O'Keefe receiving an academic achievement award from Elementary Principal Popilek.
