It is difficult to pay tribute to the memory of Stu Tanton without saying things which Stu would not have mentioned if you had known him for years. He was not a man who dwelled on his accomplish- ments, although there were many. He was not the kind of man who needed the security of prior successes to open doors for him in his daily activities. He was instead, a man who through his determi- nation and constant involvement in everything that went on around him made things happen. Stu was a native of Deckerville and attended the Deckerville Community Schools. He participated and lettered in track, baseball, basketball, and football in each of his four years at Deckerville. His major accom- plishments in the area of sports were selections to the All-Conference team in the Northern Thumb C Conference in basketball and football and his selection to the All-State Football team as a tackle in 1954. Stu's accomplishments were not all in the area of sports. While a student at Deckerville, he was the President of the Deckerville Chapter of the Future Farmers of America, and also attended Wolverine Boys State in East Lansing in 1953 and was elected to serve as County Treasurer at that gathering. After graduating from Deckerville High School, Stu continued to be a leader in this community throughout the remainder of his life. He coached little league for several years and during that time trained many local youngsters in the basic skills of that sport. He coached fifth and sixth grade basket- ball, and men's softball as well. Stu was actively involved in church activities and was proud of the fact that he had taught Sunday School for many years. His church involvement also included duties as youth leader and volunteer work as a shut-in minister, carrying the word of Christ to those who were unable to attend regular church services on Sunday mornings. Stu's proudest accomplishment was his work in Haiti as a repre- sentative of Christian Service International. During several visits to Haiti, Stu and other members of that organization built churches and conveyed the word of Christ to the residents of that island. Stu was the Secretary of the Gideons International for some time, and served as a local delegate to the Michigan Milk Producers Association. He was also an active member of Farm Bureau. Stu had served eight full years on the Deckerville Board of Education and was in his ninth when he passed away. He had been the President of that body for the past two years. Stu Tanton will be missed by all of us, but because he was willing to give of himself while he was with us, he will never be forgotten.
