OUR FRIEND FROM GERMANY FRIEDERIKE BANSCHBACH Ricky crossing a busy street in downtown Berlin. In the distance an old church can be seen standing next to its modern addition. Frederike Banschbach is our exchange student from the Federal Republic of Germany. She has two younger brothers, and one younger sister in Germany. Ricky as she prefers to be called, has a father who is a safety engineer, and a mother who is a house- wife. She is close to her family, and misses them very much. Ricky enjoys playing her classical guitar more than anything else. However, she also enjoys sewing, swimming, playing volleyball, riding bicycles and learning to speak foreign languages. In Germany, Ricky is studying to enter a career in hotel manage- ment. She hopes that after completing this specialized training, she will find employment with an international hotel and travel around the world. Ricky describes the educational system in Germany as being considerably different than our system. In Germany, children attend pri- mary school from the age of six to ten. At that time they are tested, and a decision is made to determine whether they will continue in primary or elemennqy school, or advance to secondary school. At the completion of secondary school, a test is administered to establish a student's qualifications to attend the university. The school year in Germany starts in September, and continues on a six day a week basis throughout the school year. Not five but six!! Yes, students in Germany even attend school on Saturdays!! All students in Ger- many are required by law to attend school until they are 18 years of age, which is also different from our standard procedure in the United States. Ricky's main reason for coming to the U.S. was to improve her English language skills, and to study our lifestyle and culture.
