1980-81 DECKERVILLE EAGLE STAR DECKERVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS 2633 BLACK RIVER STREET DECKERVILLE, MICHIGAN 48427 PHONE (313) 376-3875 STUDENT ENROLLMENT 1,061 BOARD PRESIDENT—STUART TANTON BORN DECEMBER 30, 1935—DIED SEPTEMBER 12, 1980 Stuart Tanton, right, is photographed with his friend Jim Merriman at the first football game of the 1980 season in Sandusky. It is difficult to pay tribute to the memory of Stu Tanton without saying things which Stu would not have mentioned if you had known him for years. He was not a man who dwelled on his accomplish- ments, although there were many. He was not the kind of man who needed the security of prior successes to open doors for him in his daily activities. He was instead, a man who through his determi- nation and constant involvement in everything that went on around him made things happen. Stu was a native of Deckerville and attended the Deckerville Community Schools. He participated and lettered in track, baseball, basketball, and football in each of his four years at Deckerville. His major accom- plishments in the area of sports were selections to the All-Conference team in the Northern Thumb C Conference in basketball and football and his selection to the All-State Football team as a tackle in 1954. Stu's accomplishments were not all in the area of sports. While a student at Deckerville, he was the President of the Deckerville Chapter of the Future Farmers of America, and also attended Wolverine Boys State in East Lansing in 1953 and was elected to serve as County Treasurer at that gathering. After graduating from Deckerville High School, Stu continued to be a leader in this community throughout the remainder of his life. He coached little league for several years and during that time trained many local youngsters in the basic skills of that sport. He coached fifth and sixth grade basket- ball, and men's softball as well. Stu was actively involved in church activities and was proud of the fact that he had taught Sunday School for many years. His church involvement also included duties as youth leader and volunteer work as a shut-in minister, carrying the word of Christ to those who were unable to attend regular church services on Sunday mornings. Stu's proudest accomplishment was his work in Haiti as a repre- sentative of Christian Service International. During several visits to Haiti, Stu and other members of that organization built churches and conveyed the word of Christ to the residents of that island. Stu was the Secretary of the Gideons International for some time, and served as a local delegate to the Michigan Milk Producers Association. He was also an active member of Farm Bureau. Stu had served eight full years on the Deckerville Board of Education and was in his ninth when he passed away. He had been the President of that body for the past two years. Stu Tanton will be missed by all of us, but because he was willing to give of himself while he was with us, he will never be forgotten. Gee, they allow this kind of stuff in magazines? 16 Boy, that yearbook class sure gets the breaks, huh? Well, maybe it seems to others as though Student Publications is all fun and games, but the above only occurs one day out of the year. The rest of the time, we have a big job, putting out a yearbook and a newspaper, doing layout, typing copy, and trying to keep people from covering their faces when we want to take a picture! But if you enjoy hard work, come and join us next year. 17 OUR FRIEND FROM NORWAY NADJA BRUSETH Nadja Bruseth is our exchange student from Norway. Nadja has one brother who is eight years older than her, and no sisters. Her father is an over-engineer and her mother is a music teacher. Nadja's fa- vorite pass time is traveling. She is already formulating plans to return to the United States in a few years and travel throughout most of the country enjoying the sights and the people with whom she comes in contact. She also enjoys photography, writes to pen pals all over the world, all kinds of sports and handicrafts of all types. Nadja describes Norway's system of education as being a little different from ours. In Norway, chil- dren start school when they are six or seven years old and they attend school for nine years. After com- pleting the nine required years of education they must either attend a career school or go to college. In order to attend the University, one must have college attendance in his background. Nadja is on the Deckerville Junior Varsity Volleyball team and eagerly participates in all of the team's contests. She is also an active member of V.I.C.A. Vocational, Industrial, Clubs of America. Nadja tells us that Norway and Michigan are similar in many respects. Specifically, she says that Nor- way and Michigan both have long, cold winters and hot summers. One stark contrast however, is that Norway has mountains which Michigan lacks. The peat moss pile outside of Sandusky apparently doesn't count. Because it is mind expanding to learn about the culture and life styles of other countries, we asked Nadja what the most popular food is in her country. Her response confirms are suspicions, people are people are people are people. The most popular food in her country is, you guessed it, pizza!! When Nadja returns to Norway she will go to college and attend until she graduates. After gradu- ation she would like to obtain a job as an airline stewardess for an international airline so that she will be able to continue to travel around the world meeting interesting people. If you would like to communicate with Nadja when she returns to her country, you can write or call her using the address or phone number listed below. Nadja Bruseth Fjordveien 65 A 1322 Hovik, Norway Phone- (02)-53 91 08 18 OUR FRIEND FROM GERMANY FRIEDERIKE BANSCHBACH Ricky crossing a busy street in downtown Berlin. In the distance an old church can be seen standing next to its modern addition. Frederike Banschbach is our exchange student from the Federal Republic of Germany. She has two younger brothers, and one younger sister in Germany. Ricky as she prefers to be called, has a father who is a safety engineer, and a mother who is a house- wife. She is close to her family, and misses them very much. Ricky enjoys playing her classical guitar more than anything else. However, she also enjoys sewing, swimming, playing volleyball, riding bicycles and learning to speak foreign languages. In Germany, Ricky is studying to enter a career in hotel manage- ment. She hopes that after completing this specialized training, she will find employment with an international hotel and travel around the world. Ricky describes the educational system in Germany as being considerably different than our system. In Germany, children attend pri- mary school from the age of six to ten. At that time they are tested, and a decision is made to determine whether they will continue in primary or elemennqy school, or advance to secondary school. At the completion of secondary school, a test is administered to establish a student's qualifications to attend the university. The school year in Germany starts in September, and continues on a six day a week basis throughout the school year. Not five but six!! Yes, students in Germany even attend school on Saturdays!! All students in Ger- many are required by law to attend school until they are 18 years of age, which is also different from our standard procedure in the United States. Ricky's main reason for coming to the U.S. was to improve her English language skills, and to study our lifestyle and culture. We will miss Ricky when she is gone, but you can contact her by writing or calling. Friederike Banschbach Heilbronnerstr. 1 A 7514 Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen 19 Another one of Mr. Mino's stories! War games or school work? I like Mino's legs too! Neal and Michelle seeing eye to eye. I can't remember when I've had such fun. Laurie deep in thought, Laurie Yearkey?! Mr. Shramm reflecting back fondly on his days as a benchwarmer. Boy, Chris, what did you do before the game? Another interested fan According to this we were supposed to win. Kathy Nolan, varsity cheerleader, dances to Whip It. 22 After—another satisfied customer. Lori, Mary, Li , and Bonnie display their Christmas spirit. 23 Would you believe, I gotta go potty?” So this is tractor field day! Man, are we having a ball.” Maybe if 1 make it smaller, Nezworski won't notice the mis- takes. Yes these are monkey bars, and I feel right at home. Now girls, lets not lose our heads, coach Wolfe exclaimed. I'm not sure, but 1 think I have the Saturday Night Fever, how about you?? i And they say Ernest Hemmingway started out like this? Yuk!! This is very interesting!! This would be a good time to pop the big question. Just when you think you won't have to see Carol Ridley anymore, you learn they are making a statue of her!! This year's spirit week was full of laugh's. On Monday we had people come to school wearing tee-shirts, hats, and ties. On Tuesday everybody dressed as farmers. On Thursday everybody wore their best clothes backwards for backwards and clash day. Also, the var- sity girls basketball team had slave day. Friday, students either dressed up, or wore maroon and gold. Last but not least, a few lucky students had to sweep floors, carry books, etc. for the varsity football slave day. HOMECOMING DANCE 1980-81 My, don't they make a GOOD couple!! TRADITION LIVES ON AT HOMECOMING—RAIN! Even though it rained again this year, the 1980-81 Homecoming was a huge success. That is what students face upon gradu- ation from high school and partially why schools exist—to help young people become upstand- ing, humanistic, knowledgeable, and thinking people who will fare well when challenged by the unknown or when facing periods of happiness or adversity. Education can provide a better quality of life. It can afford opportunities to improve one's financial position and to contribute more fully to society. School systems during the past 25 years have drawn their share of criticism. Media headlines and articles speak of vandalism, absenteeism, drug abuse, falling test scores, poor morale, public apathy, and poor perfor- mance by graduates in reading, writing, and communication skills. Some school systems do have those prob- lems to varying degrees; however, on the other hand, good things are happening in the country's schoo1 systems—including ours. One can find that the average adult 25 years or older has completed high school or some form of advanced training, more young people are enrolled and attending school regularly than ever before, illiteracy has been practically erased, and our students do very well on international achievement tests. All has not gone awry. Our small school in Sanilac County, Michigan, is one of the 25,000 or so schools in the United States. Van dalism is not a problem; neither are dropout and absenteeism rates. The school affords students the opportu- nity to learn (if they pursue learning in an active, not a passive way) all the basic skills—reading, math- ematics and communication, along with a myriad of other courses. A Career Center, which offers some 17 technical courses is available to juniors and seniors. Add to the above well prepared teachers who are always willing to help; good materials, a fine library; a good physical plant; plus interested, helpful and supportive parents. All our students do have good educational opportunities—reinforcing the fact that good things are happening in schools in the United States. I have no personal fear concerning the future of our country, if our Deckerville students are any example. They are a credit to themselves, their families, churches, community, and school.
