1979 EAGLE STAR DECKERVILLE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS 2633 Black River Street Deckerville, Michigan 48427 Days turn into weeks— Weeks blend into months— Months fade into years. Seeing the seasons changing— Changing with them- Like a big puzzle— Bits and pieces fit together. Learning- Loving— Sharing— Remembering. Holding thoughts and erasing doubts. From disillusion to enthusiasm— All a learning experience at DHS. 2 Opening« Just Another One Table of Contents Opening............... 1 Activities and Events . 14 Seniors...............30 Underclassmen.........50 Elementary........... 68 Administration Staff 90 Fine Arts............108 Organizations........118 Sports...............128 Advertisements ......152 Index ...............164 Closing..............166 Opening 3 of Those Days! High Points We came back from summer vacation to a new time schedule which many late risers had a hard time adjusting to. The busses were cleaned, repaired, and ready to go. The school was in tip- top shape. It was a totally new atmosphere that was quite a change going from shorts and bathing suits to pants and suits. New faces in different places provided a change of scenery (even if they totally weren’t their own Scott!). Some old traditions were broken while others were started. It was hard getting back into the swing of things, but somehow we managed. Kids finally got to see their friends after a long summer. d. 4 Opening Opening 5 Spirit Week for Wild One of the craziest weeks Deckerville has known this year: SPIRIT WEEK. For five days the strangest objects were walking down the hall and every day we had fun looking at each other. Deckerville’s Spirit was so famous all over the world, that even the Italian Mafia came to peek at how things were going......... Miss Fritz really made work of dress-up day 6 Opening and Crazy People Other Than Steve Martin! little mice were running all over the school__ Backwards day caused hilarious situations in classrooms......... A day to remember for Deckerville: We had finally won a Homecoming game and could go to a Victory Dance. Opening 7 Finally Getting Into Mere is our great football team ready to smash into those Mayville Wildcats and get the ball away from them. It was a great game and nobody but our Eagles could have done it better. Great going guys’! the Swing of Things Adrienne from Holland, one of our exchange students, is waiting to start work at FFA Tractor Field Day. A lot was accomplished that day, and she was a big part of it. After a success at the football game, everyone was ready to dance the night away at our Victory Dance. We had a good turnout and everyone enjoyed them- selves. What style and look at those shoes! Opening 9 Mystery Meat, Spacecrafts, What! Oh what! is that mystery meat? Any knowledgeable information as to the content please inform! The Junior’s imagination and great work captured them first place on their Homecoming float. The Eighth Graders won second, and third, but not least, were the Seniors! 10 Opening Friends and School Spirit Prevail It is clear that these TWO are enjoying the dance. Sue Stoldorf, Yoshi Veno, Debbie Kirkpatrick, and Adrienne Segeren enjoying Tractor Field Day. Opening 11 Another exciting evening at Deckerville High School. During our home-game against Mayville, our new home- coming queen and king were to be chosen. Twelve can- didates were shivering on the football field anxiously waiting to hear who would be the 1978-1979 Homecom- ing Queen and King. Happiness was around when Sally Wadsworth was announced as the new Homecoming Queen and was crowned by last years’ queen Michelle Al- lard. After the game—which ended in a wonderful victory of the Eagles over Mayville-a great many people enjoyed the dance, during which Mike Boice was crowned Home- coming King for this year. As usual, it wouldn’t have been homecoming without the rain! In spite of the rain, though, everyone was happy and another year, another game, and another queen and king had gone by. Everyone will always cherish the one in which they participated but will always look forward to the next one to come. Michelle Allard, Sally Wadsworth, and escourt, Don Van Nor- man Another Bright Spot in the School Year 14 Homecoming Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Wadsworth and Sally Homecoming 15 A Day of All Days A great many farmers joined on this day to show their tractors and abilities to the public. Future farmers had their chance to compete with others and made it clear that their future lay in farming. It was a cold, windy day at L. J. Terpenning’s farm. Much thanks goes to the Terpennings for giving us the use of their farm. 16 Tractor Field Day to Remember! One of the “toppers” of Tractor Field Day was the contest of catching greasy pigs. It was hilarious to see someone fight with a screaming, greasy pig. In the end there were only three winners, with the prize being, of course, the pig! A lot of organizing was necessary before the big day arrived and even more went into it that day! The Varsity Football team shows their spirit at a pep assembly. DHS teachers get involved in one of the assemblies that we had this year as the students watch on. 18 Assemblies ASSEMBLIES ENVOLVE This year there were many good assemblies. The Seniors watch on very enthused about something. Tlie winners for 50’s day this year were Yoshi Ueno and Deanna Bujak. Assemblies 19 20 Plays Activity Band !? They went and competed and received a good rating for the first year of competition. With Mr. Marquardt’s knowledge and with alot of interest from the kids, these newly formed choir groups could go far. Keep watch in the near future for the upris- ing Deckerville Choirs! 22 Choral Choral Concerts 23 PROM 1979 . . . sharing This year’s Junior-Senior Prom was held at the Watergate Inn in Port Sanilac. The music was furnish- ed by Dartz with the theme song of Sharing the Night Together. 24 Prom the night together Many couples enjoyed themselves at the Prom this year. The majority of them had their dinner at the Fogcutter in Port Huron. This night will hold memories in the minds of everyone. It was a night to be enjoyed and remembered. Bakesales, Fish Frys, sucker sales, and much much more. Il was mostly the same people that worked at them, but we had a riot! The clean-up was really the pits, but it had to be done. Afterwards we all left.exhausted. 40 Senior Fundraising Fundraising 41 ORLANDO, FLORIDA— This year’s Senior Trip was a trip! The weather wasn’t the best, but we still had an excellent time as you can see. We had a few “practical jokers” in the crowd, but nothing that we couldn’t handle. Wet-n-Wild was a little chilly, Disney was fun, but Bush Gardens was GREAT! After a while you got a little tired and had to take a nap, but after that you were back up and at it. 42 Senior Trip HERE WE COME!!! Destination: Orlando, Florida. Time of departure 3:30 a.m. The departure from good ’ole DHS was a happy one with lots of decorations to go with the festivities. The school may have been sold if it weren’t for good old Mr. G. who picked them up and took them home. By the time we got on the plane, we all were a little tired and most slept. The speaker was Reverend Clifford Jordan. He spoke of the Giants of the Land. Tlie ceremony lasted for about one hour and each of us went on our way. Baccalaureate is a time of seriousness and not a time of fun and games. This year’s graduating class of 1979 went about it in a very mature way and did not do much goofing around. That is during the ceremony. But afterwards .. .look out! The town was packed with cars that were jammed up for some odd reason. Eventually everything was restored back to normal and everyone awaited Commencement. Baccalaureate 45 AND I WILL LEA VE A TRAIL. I wanted to hold it— hug it tightly but they were around and I was atraid, so 1 picked it up and ran with it hidden underneath my shirt closed the door and on my bed carefully took it out so limp in my hands 1 brushed the dust off my childhood, and wept. Unknown As of June 3. 1979. our childhood was a thing of the past. Adulthood was taking hold and molding us quickly, to become the society for a better tomorrow. We have learned that the past dies with each step forward we take. But some- times we lie dormant in the present, dwelling on what we are missing and what has already died. Instead we should be reaching out to what is yet to be born. Fear of the unknown must be overcome. Leaving childhood behind is painful, and once we leave it, we can never find again the soothing relief it once gave us. But we won’t need it. 46 Commencement Honor Students Caroline Medcoff Valedictorian Jeff Sanford Salutatorian Lori Setter Dave Rich Tom Vogel Carolyn Warner Steve Hooper Debbie Kirkpatrick Deanna Bujak Jim Terpenning Brian Geiger Dan Roth Wade Singler ALWAYS TRYING NEW UNUSUAL THINGS Renee Allard Diana Amey Sue Armstead Joe Baslock Kim Baslock Mary Bauman Bonnie Belger Dawn Bittner Mark Blaine Bob Boice George Bowling Donna Boyd Roxann Brabant Chris Bungart Rita Sue Burns Dorothy Campbell Rita Cibulskis Bonnie Cleary Blaine Colesa Carmin Coggins Kevin Cowley Tracey Crothers Ed Decker Doug Deike Dale Docrr 50 Juniors (Junior Class Officers:) First Row: George Bowling, President; Jayne O’Mara. Even though the past year has had its ups and downs, it brought a change to each student. Some good, and others not so good, but there was a definite change. Each one of us will go through changes all through our life whether we like it or not. It happens and there’s nothing we can do about it. In spite of the changes we must look to the future and move on to better times. At this time 1 would like to thank all of you who helped make it possible for us to construct and re-create a book that is as much like the 1978-1979 school year as we could possibly make it. To those members of the staff who dedicated themselves to the long and hard hours of constructing this book, I thank you. And to Mr. Pearson, our advisor, a special thanks for all of his time and effort that made this book possible. I would also like to acknowledge Mr. Steve Carlson of Inter-Collegiate Press for the time that he saved us by his help and knowledge of creating a yearbook. I hope that with each and every one of you who look at this book, you find the memories of the ’78-’79 school year as you remember them. We have tried to re-create this year as much as possible in the pages of this book and we hope that you enjoy it as much as we do. If there are any errors, we are sorry, but with the long hours we put into it, there might have been a few that we missed. Once again thanks to everyone for making it possible for us to produce another Eagle Star. Deanna M. Bujak 1979 Eagle Star Editor Mr. Dan Pearson . Deanna Bujak. . . Marsha Lenk. . . .
