When you look over the pages in this book, the staff sincerely hopes that you are reminded of the fond memories and good times that you have spent at Deckerville High School. We have him to thank for, among other things, our new gym which was just recently constructed. It has brought many people from near and far to our games, banquets, and to many other school functions. Down with the old school, which we will long remember, and up with the new. With the guidance of Mr. Fleck and the School Board, backed fully by the Deckerville taxpayers, this was made possible. Thank-you Mr. Fleck for doing a fine job. Membership is by invitation only, and a B average must be kept to stay in the organization. New members are probationary members for one semester after the tapping ceremony which the entire high school is invited to attend. Soon after tapping initiation is held, it is an impressive ceremony to which parents and friends are invited to attend. The tapping ceremony was held in January of this year, with twenty new members selected. Initiation is to be held February 10. The main project of the Honor Society is the Exchange Student program. This year Ulf Weislander from Sweden is our exchange student. His American home is with Mr. and Mrs. John Thayer and family. Ulf has contributed much to our knowledge of Sweden and understanding of different countries. It is our goal to send a student from Deckerville to a foreign country. In order to do this we have held slave days, car washes, and dances to raise money. We appreciate the donations of other school organizations, community organizations, and individuals who have helped bring our goal closer. Submitted by Diane Dickinson, Sec. SITTING: D. The Student Council is the governing body for junior high and high school students. It is composed of a boy and a girl representative from each grade plus the class president. One of our activities was the planing and presenting of assemblies held once a month. Many different types of programs were enjoyed by the students, such as the Rev. Robert Richies who spoke on patriotism, and Mel Snyder who gave a demonstration of many different, amusing articles made from balloons. In October we sponsored the Homecoming Dance, and won first prize with our float, Whale the Pirates , at the half-time festivities. We are currently considering the purchase of an announcement board to be placed at the front of the addition when it is completed next fall. We held a locker check and gave rocks and roses , to the dirtiest and cleanest lockers respectively. The Student Council also sponsors the pop, and candy machines available to the students during noon hours. Submitted by Diane Dickinson, Sec. LIBRARY CLUB The Library Club has twelve members-two for every hour the library is open. The librarian's job is helping a person find the book he desires or offering suggestions of good books. The librarians take turns writing Book Revues and listing books of interest in the school newspaper. The summer of 1965, Judy Brewster and Marilou Tanton were selected to attend the Library Workshop at Kalamazoo. There they attended classes for displays on bulletin boards and classes for visual aids. Also, they were shown films on the responsibilities of a librarian and making yours a better library. This year's regional meeting was held at Algonac on November 10, 1965. Regional officers were chosen and Marilou Tanton was elected Vice-President. The Library Club contributed to the Exchange Student Fund - to send one of our students to another country. We also furnish the movie film for the filming of the games for our use later. Submitted by Jim Merriman, Sec. Honor Society Initiation Formal initiation ceremonies to which parents vere invited were held Thursday evening February 10th. The 20 students who were tapped at a recent assembly were initiated as probationary members by taking the oath and receiving their membership certificates and cards. Mr. Wegster and the faculty committee consisting of Mrs. Smallwood, Mr. Waldo, and Mr. Billings then gave the ten members who have completed the required probationary semester their membership pins, and installed the four officers of the Society who had to act as officers during their probationary period because all the officers of last year were seniors and graduated last June. The formal ceremonies were concluded by the serving of refreshments to the group. We danced and danced and danced. Dr. and Mrs. Smallwood seem to be enjoying their evening. A few couples sit and chat about the evening. Diane Dickinson and Bob Jacobs enter for an evening of enchantment. Let's trip the light fantastic. The Junior class provided the refreshments to make the prom a success. Duane Williamson with his date, Vicki Keyes, chat with Mr. Webster before going into the gym. The Smallwoods, Flecks, and Waldos discuss the sue cess of the Prom. These couples could have danced all night to the music of the Noblemen. It looks like Rex Decker has everything under control. Deanna Salay, Elaine Williamson, and their dates sit this dance out. Dave Halifax and his date, Nancy Peters, seem to have enjoyed their evening. This group relaxes before returning to the dance floor. The 1965 Prom was held on May 7. The theme was A Roman Holiday . The Juniors spent hours of work on the decorations and everyone that qttended will a-gree it was a great success. The ivory pillars, the fountain, and the gold grapes were some of the highlights. The Noblemen provided the entertainment. Barb Decker and her date seem to have an interesting piece of gossip for Nancy Hangar and Bill Mosure. F. T. A The Deckerville chapter of Future Teachers of America has 60 members this year. In October several members went to the University of Detroit to a workshop. Here they were invited to tour the campus and talk with teachers who specialized in different fields of education. Everyone who attended agreed it was very informative and interesting. For a money-making project we held a dance in December and are planning other projects. A codet teaching program is being worked out for possible use in the second semester. The object of this program is to give members actual classroom experience in teaching. In the Spring our chapter will send two delegates to the annual Michigan Future Teacher's Delegate Assembly. One of these delegates will be Diane Dickinson who is currently serving as State Secretary. Submitted by Diane Dickinson SITTING: Mr. Webster, Advisor, P. Stone, Historian, P. Jones, Librarian, D.
