It must provide the experiences, both in and out of the classroom, which will further this develop- ment. Fine manhood and womanhood are the results of hard work which has been well directed. We become good citizens when we learn to give self- direction to this work. The purpose of education is to foster self-direction toward this goal. Deckerville Community Schools dedication It is with extreme pleasure that we dedicate this annual, Eagle Star, insincere appreciation of our friend and former classmate, Bertie Shaffbower. As eager freshmen we began to put together the ladder by which we climb, on a warm fall day in September 1953. Our first step was the election of class officers. Ronald Brabant led the class with the assistance of Dick Grice. Joyce Parrott kept the notes and Bob Kirkpatrick held our money. Members who spoke on our behalf at student council meetings were Rose Marie Lamont and Dave Felk. Mr. Regentine and Mr. Russell were our class sponsors. The highlights of this year were initiation and two class parties. One out door party and one held in the gym. After what seemed to be a short summer we began to build again as sophmores. Those who did not return this year were Threasea Cunningham and Larry Harrison. Gayle Root came in at the beginning of the second semester. To start the year we elected class officers as follows: President, Dick Grice; Vice President, John Merriman; Secretary, Betty Bungart; Treasurer, Sally Tobi; Student Council members, Joyce Parrott and Nelson Stolicker. Our class sponsors were Mr. Regentine and Mr. Russell. We received our rings this year as a symbol of our class, and proclaimed to all we were getting nearer to our goal. Of course we had our two class parties which were both held in the gym. Juniors at last, and how much work was ahead of each one of our 47. To lead and help us through this year we elected: President, George Pattullo; Vice President, Ronald Brabant; Secretary, Lois Decker; Treasurer, Jean Baughman; Student Council members, Janet Fritch and John Merriman. Mr. Cook, Mrs. Fleck and Mr. Russell were our class sponsors. Those who left this year were Barry Czap, Frank Mosure, Dick Noble, ana Eunice Rich. Our newcomers were Donna Jones and Edith Samuelson. In The Perfect Idiot our play, we displayed our talent with grease and paint. The last step which finishes our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Prom filled with work and fun. We are Seniors. With this thought in mind we began our last year in school. Time was running short and still more steps were needed before we reached our goal. Those who did not return this year were: Harvey Scott, John Tomicheck, Frank Mosure, Frank Wagaster, and Gene Wagaster. Our officers for the year were: President, Ronald Brabant; Vice President, David Felk; Secretary, Lois Decker; Treasurer, Jean Baughman; Student Council members, Joyce Parrott and Bob Kirkpatrick. Mrs. Fleck, Mr. Russell and Mr. Leckrone our advisors helped us over the bumps of our last steps. Our three plays The Farmers Daughter , No Greater Love , and A Wedding marked a great part in this year. The Prom our last big dance was a gay occasion. At last Graduation our goal had been reached. It was mixed with smiles and tears as we said good-by to Deckerville High realizing The past is forever gone; But the future is still our own. ROW 4: R. Mosher, B. Tanton, H. Stolicker, J. Hardison, G. Jones, P. Decker, R. Lamont, E. Stolicker, D. Smith, C. Clink, R. O'Mara, R. Leibinger. OFFICERS: President - J. Merriman, Vice-President - Bob Kirkpatrick, Secretary - J. Grice, Reporter - D. Abbott, Treasurer - L. Booth. Sentinal - D. Felk. The Deckerville F.F.A. uses many activities to develop its members. As a result most members find activities in which they may excell. The F.F.A. program of work pro- vides for nine main areas of endeavor. The first and most important are activities that will aid the members in becoming acquainted and established in farming. In society today boys must know the principles of cooperation. The F.F.A. has activities that aid the members to learn these principles. The cooperative F.F.A. farm and the selling of seed corn and garden seeds give them experience in working together. Com- munity service activities include the F.F.A. fair, banquet, plowing contest, and tree plant- ing. The F.F.A. member is encouraged to work toward a high scholastic standing. He receives points for good marks and the chapter maintains an honor roll. Leadership is one of the nations greatest needs and the F.F.A. through its contests and leadership camp for officers aims at developing its members to become leaders. Through our progress ladder, F.F.A. farm and various leadership activities, members have experiences that should make them better farmers, better farm leaders, and better citizens. The five games marked the most a reserve football team has ever played at Decker- ville and it is planned to carry on with a six game schedule in coming years as a regular part of the Athletic program. For the most part the Reserve team is made up of Freshmen and Sophomores but some Juniors and Seniors are carried on the squad depending on their ability and experience. Due to the fact there is no junior high football most boys in the ninth grade are playing the game for the first time and it is felt the Reserve Team plays a big part in the building of future pigskin stars just as the reserve team in basketball fur- nishes future cage heroes. The baseball season was an unusually rough one this year, with Decker- ville losing all but one game. The boys played five home games while three were away. Although some of the games were close, they just couldn't score enough runs to bring home more than one victory. Mr. Waldo did a fine job of coaching the boys, assisted by the manager. Gerald Hooper.
