Student Council Helps Make a Good School Better The Student Council with its sole objective being that of making Decatur High School a better school began having weekly meetings as soon as it was possible last fall. Before the council could begin on its job of bettering the school it was necessarv to elect the following officers: president, Steve Edwards; vice-presi¬ dent, Bill Jacobs; secretary, Barbara Burk. In order to make D.H.S. a cleaner school the council voted t o continue the hall check from the previous year. Each day a survey was made OFFICERS Barbara Burk, secy.; Steve Edwards, pres.; Amos Ketchum, faculty advisor; Bill Jacobs, vice-president. One of the council’s main activities was that of reducing the number of persons tardy each day. This situation was partially remedied by the posting of a graph each week showing the number of tardinesses per class. The Student Council, although still compara¬ tively young, is growing in stature every year with the last year certainly being no exception. I I The Ravelings Staff Guides Your Thoughts Space-Ward Themes around which to build a book should be thought provoking as well as entertaining, so we have fixed on the idea of space. We can¬ not but wonder what it would be like to wander on the moon, or to pay a visit to Venus, or to take a jaunt to Jupiter. Perhaps some one from this school will develop sufficient interest to prepare himself to become one day an inter¬ planetary traveler; to bring back to us stories of the men of Mars, or solid materials to prove the composition of the moon. Even though this drawing of attention to the great space about us, or as the poet puts it “The infinite meadows of heaven, may not lead any of you to become a traveler to far distant places, we hope the application here is adept enough to catch your attention and arouse a train of thought towards the “Wide Blue Yonder.” We hope you will enjoy this book as much as we have enjoyed developing it, and arranging it for you. COLOR WHEEL—Splashes Color Through the Year The Color Wheel Club, an organization for those interested in Art, has again had a busy year. To start the year, the officers were elected. They are Terry Holtsberry, president; Gene Krick, vice-president; and Jim McDonald, sec¬ retary-treasurer. With Christmas the projects began, props were made for the Christmas program, and the windows in Mr. Dorwin’s room and the study President, Terry Holtsberry; vice-president. This year for the Sectional Tournament the Color Wheel Club made papier mache Yellow Jackets, which they hung in the halls. On April 24 the Fine Arts Festival was held. The paintings that were on display were made by local residents. Margaret Azbell shows a drawing for the art exhibit. THE CHOIR Like the Songs of Skylarks The choir, composed of fifty-three students, elected as their officers the following: president, Bill Bond; vice- president, Kathy Schultz; secretary, Connie Baxter; treasurer, Steve Edwards. Throughout the year the choir has made numerous appearances under the very capable direction of Miss Helen Haubold. The first appearance was in November when the choir sang for Spiritual Emphasis Week. Later the same month the Choir sang for High School Open House. A Christmas concert was given for a combined Ro¬ tary and Lions Clubs meeting. Solos were featured, in¬ cluding a song by our accompanist, Eleanor Miller. In March the choir participated in the annual Music Festival, held this year at Berne. It was a wonderful experience. In April the choir sang a group of numbers at the Art Festival. The last appearance by this choir were for Bac¬ calaureate and Commencement, with the Senior mem¬ bers, singing together for the last time, “D.H.S.” Right: At the Music Festival President, Bill Bond; vice-president, Kathy Shultz; secretary, Connie Baxter; treasurer, Steve Edwards. BAND—A Hard Working, Good Musical Organization In the fall of the year the band, as well as everything else at D.H.S. comes back to life after the summer’s vacation, and this year was no exception. It started with a bang as the band provided the pre-game and between-half mu¬ sical entertainment at football games, plus marching maneuvers. Following shortly were the various other an¬ nual performances; namely, the band trip to the Bluffton Street Fair, the basketball games, dur¬ ing which it provided frequent special num¬ bers, the Calithumpian Parade, and the Christ¬ mas program. In March the band traveled to Berne for the third consecutive combined concert with Berne and Bluffton. This involved one hard night of combined practice, but the experience was well worth it. On April 24, the Band joined with the Choir and Art Department in presenting the Fine Arts Festival. This was the last activity of this school year. It is sincerely hoped that all the members, except the seniors, will be back next fall with even more spirit and enthusiasm. 24 STUDENT DIRECTORS Mike Kaehr Ron Feller Drum Major and Majorettes Eddie Morgan Bobbielou Butler Becky Jackson Janet Habegger Marceda Whetstone 25 The Christmas program this year was, in general, a repeat of that of former years. I FUTURE HOME MAKERS Sewing - Cooking - Planning One of the first things we did this year was elect the fol¬ lowing class officers: Pat Girod, president; Pat Sovine, vice- president; Mary Heller, secretary; Kathy Walters, treasurer; Beverly Stults, historian; Pat Death, parliamentarian; Karen Robinson, song leader. One of the things the F.H.A. has done this year was to have a chili supper at which the Freshmen were in charge. Instead of taking a trip this year, we decided to have a junior and Senior breakfast on the last day of school. OFFICERS— Seated: Mary Heller, Secy.; Kathy Walters, Trcas. Standing: Pat Sovine, Vice-pres.; Pat Girod, Pres. COMMERCIAL CLUB Somebody’s Good Future Secretary The commercial club is composed of junior and senior typing and shorthand students. Many activities were included in its program this year. The first activity was to elect officers. This was carried out successfully and the results were as follows: president, Linda Jackson; vice-presi¬ dent, Judy Hott; secretary, Ann Lehnnan; and treasurer, Pat McCammon. The most outstanding achievement of the year was the production of the 1959 Gabfest. From the efforts put forth by many students of the senior typing class and our supervisor, Mr. Hetrick, one of the most outstanding of all edi¬ tions was produced. The 1959 Commercial Club accomplished many worth while endeavors and we want to wish next year s club as much fun and success as we have had this year. On stage with Air. Brown was the Stu¬ dent Council. Air. Jose Silva brought with him a variety of banjoes and did a good job playing them. He is quite well known as Mr. Banjo. Mr. Paul Hansel, a vice president of Central Soya Co. challenged the pupils to “be champions” in all worth¬ while phases of life. Other programs ranged all the way from science to auto racing. 30 JUNIOR-SENIOR RECEPTION Given Japanese Tinge The theme of the ’58 prom was “Sayonara,” which translated for us who speak only English means “fare¬ well.” The decorations were typically Japanese with Japanese lanterns, a foot bridge and a teahouse. SENIOR HISTORY - We Will Not Pass This Way Again The first activity of the Senior Class was to elect officers and a sponsor, President—Steve Ed¬ wards, Vice-President—Bill Jacobs, Secretary—Ann Kocher, Treasurer—Pat Franklin, Sponsor — Miss Vera. As their primary money making activity the Seniors once again sponsored the annual Student Day Sale. Due to the fine all-for-one spirit dis¬ played by the student body it was a huge success. During the second semester the Seniors visited the General Electric and the Central Soya. Both trips were very interesting as well as educational. We also went to Indianapolis for a day to see the Indiana General Assembly in operation. One of the major social events of the year was the Junior and Senior Prom. The Juniors did a fine job of planning and decorating around the theme, “Southern Serenade.” The Seniors are deeply grate¬ ful to the Juniors for making the Prom something that the Seniors will remember for a long time to come. Our Baccalaureate services were held on the fol¬ lowing Sunday, May 17. On Thursday, May 21, Commencement exercises were held. This was the day we had all been anxiously awaiting. A challenging speech was given by Dr. John H. Furbay, Director of Air World Education for T.W.A. The Seniors were presented their diplomas by Mr. Hutker. The Commencement dance followed the exercises. Entertainment for the remainder of the night was provided by various city organizations. Fond memories of the last four years at good old D.H.S. are shared by each and every Senior. 44 Senior Officers V. Pres. Bill Jacobs Secy. Ann Kocher Pres. Steve Edwards Treas. Well, here we are, juniors, with only one short year after this, at D.H.S. The first things we did last fall was to elect class officers. They are as follows: Jim Gay, president; Barbara Burk, vice-president; Lois Jean Gerke, secretary; Jack Dailey, treasurer; Catherine Weidler, sponsor. We sponsored three successful dances this year, the “Team Tribute after a home football game, “Rock the Conga after a basketball game, and “Holly Hop at Christmas time. We were very well represented on the ath¬ letic field this year, having many boys partici¬ pating in the various sports. We also had many of our class active in F.H.A., intramurals and girls’ sports. We are very proud of Jack Dailey, who was selected to spend the summer in Japan, as an ex¬ change student sponsored by the Rotary Club. On April 10, under the direction of Miss Weidler, we staged a class play entitled “The Unguided Miss. We elected Mr. Irvine as our class sponsor. Four Freshmen were elected to the Student Council—Max Eichenauer, Al Townsend, Jean Finlayson and Paula Strickler. We wish to thank them for the fine job they have done. Several of the boys received football letters for participating in Freshman football. The Freshman Basketball team had a very successful season, winning 16 games and losing only 5 games. The highlight of the season was winning the invitational tourney at Decatur. By winning the tourney we also won the trophy. Many of our class members are members of the honor roll; we are very proud of them. The Freshmen had the pleasure of sponsoring two dances which were very successful. Several students in the Latin I class received certificates and pins for their excellence on tests. 51 Eighth Grade Row 1: Donna Allison, Robert Andrews, Russel Augsburger, James Bailer, Harold Ballard, John Bed- well, David Berry, Donna Bixler, Roger Bixler, Syl¬ via Bleeke, Cheryl Bollenbacher, John Brecht, Sheri Brodbeck, Ilo Brown. Jim Martin was elected president; Rita Norquest, vice-president; Cindy Collier, secre¬ tary; and Benny Colter, treasurer. Our football team made an excellent showing against its two opponents. We tied a New Haven team 7-7; and after a rugged battle, we beat Columbia City, 14-7. The four cheerleaders—Sylvia Bleeke, Janet Reinking, Cindy Collier, and Rita Norquest— did a fine job in helping the basketball team with the Jr. High tournament held in our gvm- nasium and also in boosting the team to a fine season record of 19 wins and 6 losses. With basketball and other activities over, we are looking forward to the annual Eighth Grade party, an exciting summer, and our entrance into high school next fall as freshmen. 52 Eighth Grade Officers CYNTHIA COLLIER - - - - Secretary BENNIE KOLTER ----- Treasurer JAMES MARTIN. In our first football game we were defeated by Auburn by a close score of 12-6. We lost our first conference game to New Haven 19-13. Again we could have won with a few breaks. The Jackets defeated Penn, a new consolidation, 21-13. The team then made it two straight by defeating arch-rival Bluffton 19-0. This was a sweet victory for the Jackets. In a water-logged contest we were beaten by Columbia City 14-13. Kendallville defeated the Jackets 13-0. It was just one of those nights. In our final game we were de¬ COACHES: Bob Worthman, Jerry Leitz. feated by Concordia 19-14. The team finished the season with a great show of spirit and fight. Our won-lost record wasn’t so good but we were never beaten by more than 13 points and shut out only once.
